The Medical Assistant: Why Are You In Pain?

When examining a patient, they may have questions about different aspects of their body. It is the Medical Assistant’s responsibility to be thoroughly educated on the human anatomy and its functions – the nervous system being one of them. Educating the patient is a critical aspect of the Medical Assistant’s role during an examination.

Being told that something is wrong with you can be scary. Getting surgery performed on you can be terrifying. Patients that must be undergo anesthesia could become apprehensive about the whole procedure. But what helps is knowing that there is an anesthetist with you along the way. The anesthetist informs the patient of the surgery and attempts to calm their nerves before surgery. The anesthetist monitors and ensures the patient is stable during the surgery and informs the patient of the result of the surgery after the surgery. Essentially, the sole person that is concerned about the body as a whole during the surgery is the anesthetist. Two years ago, I had no idea what an anesthesiologist assistant was or that this highly skilled profession

It’s the nurse's duty to advocate for her patient and to make sure that the patient understands and ask questions if necessary.

Physician Assistant’s who may also go by the name PA, practice medicine under the supervision of a physician or a surgeon. PA’s must be formally trained and can examine patients, review medical histories, diagnose illnesses and injuries, order and interpret diagnostic tests such as x-rays and blood tests, prescribe medication, document patient progress, and treat a range of ailments (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, 2014). The physician assistants code of ethics is divided into four categories; Patient independence, goodwill, fair treatment and nonmaleficence (Anderson, J. (2015)). The code of ethics promotes dignity, integrity, honesty and accountability.

It is no secret that communication is key when providing direct patient care in a skilled nursing facility. However, there is a noticeable lapse in the communication between the care team when providing care to the individual or groups of individuals. Two main parts of any care team are the registered nurse and the certified nursing assistant, as these are the two people whom have the most direct and impactful roles with residents in a skilled facility. The Registered Nurse and the Certified Nursing Assistant play similar roles in providing patient care, but have different roles in its entirety. The role of the Registered Nurse (RN) is defined as having the competency and skill to provide direct and indirect health care to individuals, their families, and communities around them. Services are also provided designed to give out medications, to promote comfort or healing, promote healing, and to also provide the dignity of their patients and patient’s families (American College of Rheumatology, 2015).

Advocating for patients is a key part of nursing. Working in the emergency department, I meet people from all different walks of life, who are sometimes not able to fend or stand up for themselves. As a nurse, it is my job to advocate for them and make sure that they receive the care that they need. . Recently I had a patient who was in pain and was shy to ask for pain management. I advocated for this patient by going to the doctor and requesting pain management for this patient. By recognizing the signs of pain in my patient and having a good form of communication with the doctor, I was able to provide my patient with quick and appropriate care.

The Ethical Conduct for the Physician Assistant Profession also states “In the absence of a preexisting patient–PA relationship, the physician assistant is under no ethical obligation to care for a person unless no other provider is available. A PA is morally bound to provide care in emergency situations and to arrange proper follow-up.”1 (pg5) So these are not just her legal duties, but they’re her moral duties as well.

You must be able to understand what the person requires, act on it from the initial information until the matter is concluded, pass on the information to the relevant person/s to ensure the patient’s needs are met, this process takes time to have faith in your colleagues, to challenge them if you feel the right

I will stay calm and will not be nervous during the interaction. I will do this by focusing on the needs of my patient and by trying to understand how she is feeling in this situation. I will ask open ended questions. I will do this in order to foster a meaningful conversation and to allow my patient to answer questions in her own way. I will use silence throughout my interaction in order to give my patient time to think about what she wants to say. I will do this by waiting for her answers and by encouraging my patient to take part in our interaction.

Being a Medical Assistant you must be prepared to face the various types of emergencies. Two most common emergencies that a Medical assistant will be facing are seizures and fainting. In appearance it would seem that fainting and seizures are a little similar they both disrupt the normal consciousness.

The role of the medical assistant is steadily evolving because medical assistants are cross-trained in to perform both administrative and clinical duties. State law dictates the duties a medical assistant is able to legally perform. The duties carried out by the medical assistant can vary depending on the location, size and/or specialty of the facility one works within. Just as the scope of practice of medical assistants is evolving and expanding, so has the need for medical assistants in the health care field.

A JOURNEY TO PROVIDE CARE When in the emergency room, many will groan because a "real doctor" is not taking care of them. However, the physician’s assistant’s (PA) job in the emergency room is to assist in taking a load off of the doctor so that the doctors can focus on the extremely critical patients. There are a number of fields that one can work in as a PA. Because of the variety of job choices, studies have shown that a physician’s assistant is the second most wanted job in the United States of America. (cite) To become a physician's assistant one must be willing to endure schooling and trials, though the job is full of benefits.

Healthcare assistants (HCAs) work within hospital or community settings under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional. As a healthcare assistant, it would be my duty to look after the patient when they are at the hospitals. My duties would include,

I am taking courses towards my Associate’s Degree in Medical Assisting as a ticket back into the nursing program that will eventually lead to a Bachelor’s Degree in the Science of Nursing. According to O*Net Online, they work in hospitals, clinics, and medical offices performing routine laboratory procedures, patient care tasks as well as preparing rooms and patients for physician’s procedures.

If I ever have to do anything like this again I know a few things I
