The story of ¨The Most Dangerous Game¨ is that Rainsford and a female companion was on a yacht in the Atlantic ocean sailing to Rio. In the night, when he heard three gunshots off in the distance, so he went to the side and leaned over the side a little too far and fell off the boat. He tried to swim back to the boat but it was traveling too fast for him to keep up with. He decided to swim toward the sound of the shots. When he was at the place where he heard the shots he was walking up on to an island, another shot was fired then he stated ¨ a twenty-two¨. As daylight was rising over the hill Rainsford found the bullet casing in the sand. He spotted footprints on the ground, he followed them to a huge mansion on the edge of the woods on the
In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and the poem “Porphyria’s Lover” by Robert Browning, the authors use characterization and imagery to convey that the desire for power can drive man to psychotic actions.
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
The Most Dangerous Game was a story made by Richard Connell in 1924, and had a movie adaptation in 1932. The short story tells about a man stranded on an island by the name of Rainsford. He finds Zaroff, a general with a great lust for hunting, who hunts people and Rainsford himself going to be hunted. He then attempts to outwit the general and ends up possibly taking his place. The film tries to encapsulate the excitement and story of the original version with more enticing visual effects and mostly succeeds. Although the film shares many themes and characteristics as the story, it has also changed many key factors.
In his tale, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell tells the Rainsford’s story on a mysterious island in the Caribbean Sea. Furthermore, Connell explains that people who arrive at this place are forced to participate in a sinister game that is described, by the author, as the most dangerous game. This Connell’s tale is a suspenseful and adventure story about two experienced hunters against one another in a life-and-death competition in which only one of them can be the winner. According to the Sparknotes website, the human-hunting-humans scenario in this story has inspired countless novels, television episodes and films, such as The Hunger Games, that have tried to recapture the essence of Connell’s original story. Throughout this story,
What is human nature? The Bible says in Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We are all fallen, sinful and depraved, all of us are. Humans are evil. Genesis 1-3 shows us that God made us whole and good, but we have ruined his perfect plan. The greatest of men were all sinners. Moses, the leader of Israel was a murder (Exodus 2:11-15), David slept with Bathsheba and then killed her husband (2 Samuel 11-12), Paul murdered christians (Acts 9), and the list goes on and on.
Rainsford is an intelligent man. Early in the story, “Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right, and he doggedly swam in that direction” (34). Rainsford had just fallen in the water,
Resourcefulness is being able to overcome difficulties quickly and in a clever way. Resourcefulness can also be using one’s surroundings for his/her benefit with prior knowledge and experience. In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character Rainsford shows these skills of resourcefulness as he tries to survive the hunt. Rainsford is an experienced big game hunter that is trapped on a tropical jungle covered island with another big game hunter, General Zaroff. Zaroff has gained so much experience in hunting, due to this he has lost interest in hunting animals and now enjoys the hunt of humans. Rainsford is put in the position to be torched or participate in a game of hunting. When Rainsford is challenged to this game of hunting he is forced to try and survive. Rainsford is able to survive the hunt because he uses his resources and prior knowledge to weaken Zaroff helping him win the hunt.
Rainsford woke up to the booming sinfony of dozens of hungry hunting hounds and a satisfied look soon materialized on his face. With a prolonged yawn, he rose sleepily from the luxurious bed to find the body of General Zaroff staring blankly at the ceiling. He was the hunter, his hunter, that he had just murdered. Rainsford realised he had finally and truly won the most dangerous game. He remembered what the Cossack had said before their fight, “One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed.” Rainsford silently walked over to the window and gazed down towards the dogs below. As if know what Rainsford was thinking, the hounds barked viciously at him, salivating at their mouths. He ceremoniously picked up the still body of General Zaroff and threw him out the window with a crash! He put a fresh pair of clothes on while listening to the now satisfied canines eat their meal. determined he needed to get
One of the darker actions examined in this unit takes place in "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. In this short story, General Zaroff begins hunting a man lost on his island named Rainsford. Bored of the usual game, General Zaroff decides he wants something more exciting and chooses to prey on humans. This ill-judged decision has a domino effect on the plot, ultimately ending in the demise of Zaroff. Nonetheless, an alternate ending besides death could have very well been a possibility. Perhaps, instead of hunting humans, Zaroff decides to open a hunting camp to share his passion for the sport with others. Obviously, his boredom is caused by the island's isolation from society. So, Zaroff could have built homes and started a community or decide to leave the island altogether. Then, the course of this story would have taken a completely different path. Maybe, Zaroff finds a wife, they have children and live happily ever after. If only he was able to overcome his dark side instead of letting it consume him.
Underestimation and cruel actions lead to many things. In “The Most Dangerous Game,” author Richard Connell reveals a conflict between main characters, General Zaroff and Rainsford. Rainsford was to play the most dangerous game, created by Zaroff, because the only way to survive, is to win it, otherwise death is the only other option. As demonstrated through the use of personification, symbolism, and repetition in the story, it conveys that one should understand to never underestimate another person and remember that there will always be a consequence for the wicked things that one has done.
At the end of “The Most Dangerous game” by Richard Connell Rainsford finally gets the upper hand of General Zaroff by appearing in his room, but then it leaves off at a cliffhanger and the story ends. I believe that when Rainsford surprises General Zaroff he does not kill him. I say this because once Rainsford hears about what general Zaroff is doing makes him disgusted. When Rainsford is being hunted by Zaroff he sets two traps that could definitely kill Zaroff but Rainsford sure knows that Zaroff is a smart man that wouldn’t let those traps get him. So I believe that they were both just there to try and scare rainsford.
One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard Rainsford,
In a life or death situation, survival is what we hope happens and in order to survive, certain traits have to be evident. In order to survive these great challenges people must be, resourceful, have self control, and be a quick thinker. These three traits can be seen in many different texts. The ability to be resourceful is seen in the film Castaway, the article “Lost in Death Valley”, and the article “Salvadoran Who Told of Survival at Sea Flies Home.” Being able to have self control is seen in the article “10 Year Old Survives Shark Attack in Hawaii”, The Most Dangerous Game, and again in the film Castaway.

Zaroff wants Rainsford to hunt humans with him, but Rainsford refuses because he thinks of it as murder.
