The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell is an action-packed story about an eerie survival game. In the beginning of the text, a hunter named Sanger Rainsford is aboard his yacht when he falls into the ocean and swims to an island nearby. He spots a house in the middle of the woods and goes to it to find shelter, food, clothes, and a place to rest. At the house, Rainsford meets General Zaroff, who tells Rainsford that he has brought big game onto the island to hunt. Rainsford soon realizes that the game is human. Zaroff wants Rainsford to hunt humans with him, but Rainsford refuses because he thinks of it as murder. Zaroff makes a deal with Rainsford, which states for him to leave the island he has to be hunted for three days. If Rainsford
In The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford learns a very important lesson about assuming. Rainsford was a hunter that said that it doesn’t matter if he and Whitney hunt the jaguar because the jaguar doesn’t really know what is happening. Later in the story, Rainsford finds out what it really feels like as a huntee’s and realizes that he should not have assumed the feelings of the animal. As Connell said on page 55, “Don’t talk rot, Whitney,” said Rainsford. “You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher, who cares how a jaguar feels?” Some hunters believe this as well, unless they’re like Rainsford.
The Most Dangerous Game is one of the most intriguing short stories ever made. The story was made by Richard Connell on September 16, 1932 and is a book generally about hunting. To go more in depth, it’s a book about hunting humans. It takes place on a Caribbean island in the early 20th century. The main idea of this story is about a man named Sanger Rainsford that fell overboard and ended up swimming to a nearby island inhabited by a man named General Zaroff and his friend Ivan both of which are Cossacks. Both characters encounter each other when Rainsford knocks of the door of Zaroff’s chateau. The two discuss about how Zaroff hunts an interesting animal, humans. Rainsford is then forced to play the “game”
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
From the words of C.S. Lewis, “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny”. Facing hardships and breaking free from their normal world allows the hero inside of people to come out. Many stories document this journey of a hero through the Hero’s Journey Archetype. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, a man named Rainsford stumbles upon an island where humans are hunted by a crazed man. The hero’s journey archetype is implemented throughout Rainsford’s experiences in the story. Richard Connell used the Hero’s Journey Archetype to structure the plot and develop the theme that with clever thinking and lots of hope, one can succeed at anything.
Underestimation and cruel actions lead to many things. In “The Most Dangerous Game,” author Richard Connell reveals a conflict between the main characters, General Zaroff and Rainsford. Rainsford was to play the most dangerous game created by Zaroff, because the only way to survive, is to win it, otherwise death is the only other option. As demonstrated through the use of personification, symbolism, and repetition in the story, it conveys that one should understand to never underestimate another person and remember that there will always be a consequence for the wicked things that one has done.
In order to feel satisfied, humans naturally find an activity to do when they encounter themselves no longer entertained. In the case of “The Most Dangerous Game,” written by Richard Connell, General Zaroff creates exactly what the titles states, the most dangerous game, a game of hunting the only animal that can reason: humans. This is quite ironic because Zaroff has all the wealth and power to do anything, but creates this game only to escape his boredom. Connell wrote “The Most Dangerous Game” with Rainsford as the main character, a role most typically associated with the archetypal hero. However, with an understanding of the story, readers question whether Rainsford really is the hero, his values of humans and animals, and the possibility of him becoming the villain, provoking readers to realize that the cycle of violence and oppression goes on even if believed to already be conquered.

“The Most Dangerous Game” is a very good story with a lot of suspense and foreshadowing. The story plot is about an experienced hunter, Rainsford, who falls off of a yacht in the middle of the Caribbean, and finds himself on a small island. He then goes to seek shelter and finds a mansion, where he meets another hunter named Zaroff who was tired of hunting because it wasn’t challenging enough for him. To resolve his issue, he decides to hunt something different, humans. Soon after, the two begin hunting each other. After many traps set, and shots fired, the hunt is finally over, with Rainsford coming out victorious.
“The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story by Richard Connell which takes place after World War II on a island. This story has misadventures of a worried stranded as he makes his way through a mad man’s building. “That's odd. It must have been a fairly large animal, too. The hunter had his nerve with him to tackle it with a light gun. It's clear that the brute put up a fight. I suppose the first three shots I heard was when the hunter flushed his quarry and wounded it. The last short was when he trailed it here and finished it.”
Between the movie and story in “The Most Danger Game” there several things that are taken and some added. When they added the Lady in it made the story more interesting. It was more suspenseful because it felt she was slowing Rainsford down and you weren’t sure if they would get killed. An omission that took away from the story was that Ivan did not hold the gun to Rainsford’s heart in the beginning. So Rainsford did not know what was coming until later and it was not as suspenseful during the beginning of the story. These additions did effect the theme it made it even more known that animals feel pain and fear when hunted.
Rainsford woke up to the booming sinfony of dozens of hungry hunting hounds and a satisfied look soon materialized on his face. With a prolonged yawn, he rose sleepily from the luxurious bed to find the body of General Zaroff staring blankly at the ceiling. He was the hunter, his hunter, that he had just murdered. Rainsford realised he had finally and truly won the most dangerous game. He remembered what the Cossack had said before their fight, “One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed.” Rainsford silently walked over to the window and gazed down towards the dogs below. As if know what Rainsford was thinking, the hounds barked viciously at him, salivating at their mouths. He ceremoniously picked up the still body of General Zaroff and threw him out the window with a crash! He put a fresh pair of clothes on while listening to the now satisfied canines eat their meal. determined he needed to get
How would it feel to suddenly go from being the hunter to becoming the prey? That is exactly what happened to Rainsford, one of the main characters in The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. Rainsford was a big game hunter who accidentally fell of of his yacht. He swam to a nearby island, and there he met General Zaroff, a cruel man who hunts humans for sport. In exchange for release from the island, Rainsford agrees to be hunted by Zaroff. Consequently, Rainsford is a survivor because he kills Zaroff and wins the game. Rainsford is also a survivor because he demonstrates the qualities that a person must have to be considered a survivor. Although Rainsford is a survivor, Zaroff is not. To be considered a survivor, a person must go through a traumatic or life-threatening experience but still demonstrate resilience and determination.
