As times change, the meaning of words adapts and harmonize with its society. For example, the word “family” was limited to solely bloodlines. Nowadays, the word family was more of an emotional importance. Now, with this freedom, 21st century families are unique and vary so much. My family is my sister, Marleen and me. We have so many blood relatives; however, she is “mi familia.” Our history, our understanding for one another, our willingness to forgive each other, and dependence on each other makes her “mi familia.” One of the most positive memorable moments for me was captured in this photo. This photo is a reminder of my biggest achievement so far and the person who I love the most in the world. In 2015 on the 28th of May, on Arroyo Valley High School’s football field, I can clearly remember this momentous day. I wore my jet black gown and cap with golden stoles. I proudly displayed my three cords, which I braided as a regular three strand braid to keep them from tangling. Each cord was for my participation in school clubs and activities. My first cord chalk white represented the Teaching Academy, a three year commitment with strong teaching fundamentals and working with teachers. My olive green cord was awarded to me for my presidency that sustained the Gay Straight Alliance Club, after the club supervisor left. My final cord, three cords colors: sky blue, olive green, and chalk white, was for my time at SOAR Link Crew. Link Crew is a program where upperclassmen aid
I casually walked through the park on a crisp summer day with morning dew smell still lingering in the air. Nobody is out during this time as usual. Only people awake during this hour are morning joggers and dog walkers. Of course, there was also a mother who was playing with her toddler. She catches her chocolate-brown son and tickles him, and they laugh and trip and fall together onto the floor and laugh harder. I walked by just to say hello to them as they waved back to me. I had set myself to wake up every day at this time and start running laps around the neighborhood to help lose weight. I recall running to every single spot in town on the blocks from Lang to Richland Lane were buildings in wild assortment: two drugstores, Henry Clay Frick's mansion with
Language constantly evolves and changes as it is adopted by different cultures. Consequently, words have many definitions, connotations and origins. “Family” is a term that has changed over time; as a result the traditional definition of “family” is inadequate, and limited to describe the modern version of the term. Our society tends to attach itself to the “traditional conceptualization of family” better know as a “nuclear family” which includes a set of parents, and their biological offspring (Kompara). In America, known as a “melting pot” of all cultures and races, there are many implications for the word family thus there is no such thing as a traditional family. The traditional definition, which is limited parents and their children, can no longer be used to describe an American family because of our diverse and changing familial structures.
At this point in my life, my greatest accomplishment is graduating from the New Jersey Medical School Pre-Medical Honors Program at Rutgers University. This accomplishment was the determining factor in my decision to take on a career in medicine. In this program, I was to be under the mentorship of renowned professors and students in medical school. Through these mentors, I gained a firm knowledge on what a career in the medical field consisted of. The professors were able to teach me about the history of medicine, issues in medicine, and the wide variety of career paths that exist within it. In addition, the mentors explained the pivotal impact that the health care system and health care professionals have on the health of the public. The
The most memorable day of life was when my cousin, Dwayne, and I decided we were going to see a movie. The new Fast and Furious movie had just come out, and we thought it would be nice to take our girlfriends. Before we went to the movies, we took a drive which we call “the eastern ride.” It’s a very pleasant ride with nice wind beautiful night skies. We put on some romantic music and when we got to this spot called “Point Udall,” there were some guys over there at the time that we didn’t know, but we really didn’t pay them no mind. That is just how my cousin and I were at the time. We never paid attention because we never caused trouble at all. But when It came to us, we were ready for it. So when one of the guys started talking nonsense to my cousin, I was standing there and just smiling in my head. I was like who is this guy really talking to? I told my cousin, “don’t bother with that.” That is not the match we usually look for and we left.
Family, is a word that is familiar to everyone, but may have different meanings for each individual. It is most commonly seen as a group consisting of parents and children. Family can be defined not just through blood but through love and commitment as well. In our readings this semester, one of the frequent themes has been about family. The unconditional love found in a family does not prevent them from experiencing difficult dilemmas. Families can have powerful influences on an individual being either positive, negative, or even both. The influences brought on by families can give a sense to someone as more of a positive feeling such as, attachment, love, and thrill, or a sense more negative such as pain, anger, and guilt, or, can even
There are different types of families, and what one may consider to be part of a family, another might not. For instance, not everyone believes a pet is part of a family, while others may treat their pets as their own biological children. Family is often defined as “any group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins” (“Family,” 2016). This paper will synthesize information regarding my family, including my personal family genogram, my family artifacts, and analysis of my family dynamics, which will discuss family roles, cultural aspects values and beliefs, and other components of family. Also, this paper will examine the impact of family of origin in terms of how I would approach other family systems
“Don’t let others tell you what you can’t do. Don't let the limitations of others limit your vision. If you can remove your self-doubt and believe in yourself, you can achieve what you never thought possible” said by Roy T Bennett. This is one of man quote/sayings that has helped me tremendously reach my goal of my moment in life that I will never forget. It has also helped in the beginning of this moment. My life took a turn for the worst in August 2016. All my life, from when I was born to now, I’ve been sick with multiple chronic illnesses and its just came natural to me when the time came to fight, I’m going to fight with all of my strength and will. So on August 2016 I was admitted to the hospital once again, like the usual. I didn’t mind because in the end I know I will get better with the treatments. But there was a problem, school was stating an attending to school and doing well in all my academics was my number one priority because it made me optimistic and happy for something I have control of doing and an interest of learning. So during the admission I went through so much raw moments more than any 16 year old would go in there whole lifetime. I sent a of five weeks in the hospital and during those five weeks I lost the ability to walk due to severe weakness caused by a rare neuromuscular condition. All of my confidence and self- esteem was gone. I was the most depressed I’ve been in my life because of all that was happening to me in
Family is typically seen as something that is defined by genetics and the idea that blood is what makes a family. This could not be less true. In today’s society family should not be defined by the blood that runs through your veins or your last name, it should be the amount of love that exudes from your heart. Whether you were born into a family, adopted or in the foster care system, your family members are the ones who you share moments of love and joy with, not just a last name.
The word family came into English in the fifteenth century ("World Wide Words: Family"). Its root lies in the latin word famulus, “servant “ ("World Wide Words: Family"). My family of origin comprises of the traditional family-mother, father, grandparents, great-grandparents, brother, sisters the one which I was born into, better yet, the one which God chose to bring me into the world. c) My family of creation includes my husband, children, friends, colleagues and my in-laws. I am very fortunate to have created a close-knit bond with my family of creation. They are very dear to me because I chose them, unlike my family of origin, which I had no choice in. d) The role I play in my family of origin is that of the eldest child and sibling. Being the oldest of four came with more
The summer before my sophomore year, my cross country coach challenged our team to run 400 miles over the summer in preparation for the oncoming season. Numerous athletes on our team participated, including myself. Equating to running over four miles a day, it was not going to be effortless, however the challenge sparked a drive for success in me, and I was determined to satisfy that drive. In the final weeks, I grew excited as the finish drew near, and I eclipsed the 400 mile mark with a day to spare. Success soon followed, as for the first time our coach could remember, our team won our home meet. Overall, we were much more competitive as a team that year, and it was a fantastic experience. Partaking in those experiences again was something
What word comes to mind when you hear mother, father, brother, sister, aunt, and uncle? When most people hear these words they think of their family, but what really makes a family? The common image that comes to mind when thinking about family is a mom and dad and their children. Nowadays that is not always and families are coming in all shapes and sizes. There are, “... single-parent families, stepfamilies, cohabitating families- those with unmarried domestic partners-…,” (McCaffrey, 2013, p. 3). T.V shows have even started to reflect these changing family structures, especially the show Modern Family. This show not only has the typical family structure, but also an interracial couple and same-sex couples. The unique thing about this show
It was a casual sunny mall day on a Tuesday afternoon. It was the kind of day where you get front row parking and never stand in line to check-out. It was just my toddler son and I needlessly getting out of the house to enjoy a bit of cool mall air. Our first stop is always the playground but I had to grab a few Auntie Ann’s soft pretzels to munch on while I watched him at play. Being pregnant, I simply could not resist the buttery-baked aroma circulating the air. After contemplating cinnamon sugar, I ordered the biggest cup of salted pretzel bites and a refreshing strawberry-lemonade to drink. Although I have had Auntie Anne’s pretzels numerous of times, I was not prepared for what was about to happen next.
There have been very few events throughout my lifetime that I feel have impacted or inspired me with such noteworthiness and that I know will change my outlook on the world and affect me forever. One of those events occurred when I traveled to Portugal, my parent’s homeland. From this excursion in 2007, I learned the importance of family, most importantly the distant kind. It provided me with a totally different perspective on the world and how large and extended one’s family can really be; even across cultures and continents. I felt so fortunate learning this lesson at a young age and growing to appreciate the ideals I was brought up with as a child. The family I have in Portugal has always been there; however, their faces have aged and
In life we all have something that has changed the way we perceive things. Most things that change a person’s perception happens to be an experience that they have gone thru and learned from. In my case it wasn’t necessarily an experience, it was a dog that changed my perception on life. My mind and heart was opened in a whole new way. I never thought I could love an animal just as much as I loved the people in my life. I always thought it was strange that pet owners loved and treated their pets the same way they treated their children. My perception on dogs or pets in general definitely changed. Throughout this paper you will see why I am a totally different person because of a dog that entered my life.
The end of school came eventually, and I abandoned dreams of the sixth grade. Luckily, I was transferring to another elementary school, but this offered me little consolation. Only dummies have to repeat a grade.
