Family comes from the latin word familia meaning household. According to Drench, the family system is comprised of a group of individuals who work together to adapt to outside influences (p. 198). Individuals relate to each other in predefined ways (Drench, pg 198). Power and decision-making responsibilities are understood among other groups (Drench, p 198). Webster dictionary defines “family” as a group of individuals living under one roof and under one head. Hence, the “nuclear family” of the 1950s and 1960s consisted of a mother and father and one or more children. Grandparents often lived nearby and were available to assist with childcare and other family responsibilities (Drench, p 198). So that being said, a family to me consists of a father, mother, children and other relatives. We receive our identity and value from family. We don’t get to choose the family we want to belong rather our families are chosen for us by God to keep us together. …show more content…
The word family came into English in the fifteenth century ("World Wide Words: Family"). Its root lies in the latin word famulus, “servant “ ("World Wide Words: Family"). My family of origin comprises of the traditional family-mother, father, grandparents, great-grandparents, brother, sisters the one which I was born into, better yet, the one which God chose to bring me into the world. c) My family of creation includes my husband, children, friends, colleagues and my in-laws. I am very fortunate to have created a close-knit bond with my family of creation. They are very dear to me because I chose them, unlike my family of origin, which I had no choice in. d) The role I play in my family of origin is that of the eldest child and sibling. Being the oldest of four came with more
The word family has changed so much in the past century. A family back in the 1950’s was probably considered a husband, wife, and one or more children. Times have changed and families have become much different. The Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others book defines family as a, “Unit made up of any number of persons who live in relationship with one another over time in a common living space who are usually, but not always, united by marriage and kinship” (Beebe, Beebe & Redmond, 243). Families can be broken up into five different types. The first is the traditional family, which includes a mother, father, and their biological children. Next, is the blended family which includes
On today’s date a family consisting of a mother, her two daughters, and three children were sent in to Passport Control Secondary. The family was identified as the following:
What is family? Fam-i-ly (fam’ə le, fam’le) n., any group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins (Webster’s 505). Who decided the definition of family? Who has the say as to what family really means? As far as I’m concerned, anyone who is is a big part of your life, could be considered family. Although the definition of family is someone who is related to you by birth, blood doesn’t decide who your family is, close connections and support do.
Family as defined by Webster’s College Dictionary can be one of many different people. Family can be your parents, spouse, children, brother, sister, grandmother, uncle, any blood relative, or even people who are not blood related that share that common bond (Webster 475). My definition of family is similar to Webster’s, but I feel that there is more to it than just being a blood relative or close friend. A person’s actions, beliefs, and morals play a major role in deciding who makes it into that “family” group. Family becomes more of an idea or feeling, like love or hate, than just who a person is or where they fall in
What does family mean? On Dictionary.com, family means “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children.” Family is all about being together to help each other. Connections inside of a family is what ensures a secure environment for children to feel safe in. In order for a child to feel safe, the basic needs a family should provide care, support, and time.
What is family? Family is considered the first definition of relationship between living creatures (Moore & Asay, 2008, p. 3), and can be predated surpass time itself. The family is the woven fabric of America, or any culture for that matter and is diverse, multi-faceted, an ever evolving and expanding. (Krejci, Savaiano & Ladisch, 2010).
Once there was a girl named Grace, who came from a very poor Christian family in Africa. It was hard for her family to get the basic needs such as food, clean water to drink or bathe, payment for rent, and clothes. As time went by, her family saw God working in their life, meaning they started getting the basic needs, and when Grace finished her secondary school, she got an opportunity to go and study at a university in America. She was very excited for this opportunity because she knew that it would open many opportunities for her and her whole family. Thus, when she arrived to the university in America, everything was amazing for her, and she thought it was a dream. As a result, she pinched herself and realized that it was real, and she thanked God for everything.
Families have existed since the beginning, and almost everything in our lives involve the term “families”. In religion, some groups are known as a “family” of believers. In science, family is an example of Systematic Classification, such as, Hominidae is a family of humans. Or more specifically, you have a group of friends who you can trust with your life, and will stick with you no matter what happens to you. Some might consider them their second family because they might not get that attention when they go home..
What is family? Better yet, how does it affect society? Think about if you asked a random group of people what "family" means to them. It is likely that their responses would all differentiate somehow. The concept of what a family is has evolved into various forms, and is continuing to change each day. The nuclear family, which Essentials of Sociology claims to consist "of an adult or adult couple and their dependent children," is no longer the norm of our country. Rather, the growing acceptance of diverse couples with blends of race, gender, and age, have contributed to the blurry foundation of what "family" really is. Some people may associate family with single motherhood, single fatherhood, or maybe no mother or father. They may have
A family is a basic unit in society that consists of blood related persons living together. However, this definition is not totally applicable in today’s complementary society due to variations in family relations (Henslin, 2010). Historically, the family structure types were nuclear and extended. The nuclear family consisted of two parents and children. The extended family incorporated grandparents, cousins, auntie uncle and other blood relative. Today, these family types have evolved to include, godparents, single parent families and adopted children (Henslin, 2010).
As defined by the textbook Cultural Anthropology A Global Perspective, the family is defined as a social grouping that consists of two plus people that are of the same kin, which signifies relations by blood, marriage, and or by adoption. This socially attached group lives together for an extended period of time. The grouped kin share their financial resources to care for their young or any member of kin they may be living with (Scupin). When doing research on the topic of the family, I found it interesting how frequently, the family was defined as a group consisting of two parents and children, all living within one home. This would make sense to those who 's families may consist of these members, but to those who live in a different structurally formed family, they may disagree with that definition. Families may
According to the Pocket Oxford English Dictionary (2005), it defines family as a group consisting of parents and their children, which is a good starting point however it excludes several modern family structures. For example; childless couples, two or more people who share goals and values, having long-term commitments and resides in the same dwelling house.
The first definition of family means a group of people with blood relatives. This group of people consist of parents and children is called family because they might have relationship between each other
Family is a term that can mean a variety of different things. A dictionary would define family as a group of individuals who live under the same roof. That isn’t true though, some families live thousands of miles away from each other. Most families do live under the same roof as each other. This means that they are the people you around most. You see them on a daily basis and most of your time is spent with them.
Family is often defined as a basic social unit, in which a group of people is living together and is related to each other by the ties of marriage and the bonds of blood. Family is also defined as a place where we, as human beings, seek shelter and comfort.
