In mythology heroes regularly jockey for position to be known as the greatest ever. Edith Hamilton’s Mythology comprises the ancient, mythological short stories of the Greeks and Romans. These stories range from kings and heroes to lost lovers taking their lives. The main focus on the heroes who all partake in glorious adventures and exploits like the robust Hercules or wise Theseus. Yet, what makes a hero stand out is his or her sacrificial courage, god given ability, and selfless morality.

The greek myth of Hercules is one of the most popular myths ever told. It tells of his strength courage and perseverance. Throughout this essay, I will be writing about Hercules' life and back story, the trials he faced in his life from the mistakes he made. Also, I will be explaining Hercules' cultural significance to the Greek.

Folklore and tales have been present throughout many centuries. Depending on the culture and location some tales get changed in order to fit in and relate to the current generation. However, often the tales remembered are used for inspiration for new stories, novels, and movies. With new stories being made mythology has eventually just become a loose reference in which the main points of classic mythology get lost. Disney’s Hercules is a great example of Greek mythology tales being used as a lesson to create an impactful story in which mythology was simply a reference. Although the Disney version of Hercules makes suitable points in describing Greek Mythology and ensuring that it’s viewers are somewhat erudite of the myths; Such as introducing heaven, the underworld, Zeus, Hera, additional gods, and incorporating various characters and creatures, it still contains discrepancy in which events actually happened in mythology.

Greek myths are stories that explain the meaning of life and teach moral lessons through the values of heroes, gods and mortals. In Ancient Greece, myths were an important part of the culture, first being told orally and in poems, then seen in architecture and theatre. Homer, the Greek poet, wrote epic poems such as the Iliad and the Odyssey, which are still revered and read extensively today. Greek myths have carried over to contemporary American culture, appearing in movies, children’s toys, clothing and books and the values of Greek myths are entrenched in today’s society. Notably, heroism is a prominent value that plays a major role in Greek mythology and continues to influence American culture today, as heroes inspire society with their nobility, bravery and patriotism.

Myths consists of many legendary heroes within, but what makes them different from an ordinary person. Many convey that it is not very challenging to be a hero, but wise ones know the struggles of being a hero, which the texts “Theseus” and “The Adventure of Odysseus”, written in the book “Mythology” by Edith Hamilton proves. Heroes may require help from others, but more often than not, they are fearless fighters who do not need the aid of others to be successful. Heroes might easily gain credits for the work of their fellow allies, but that does not mean it is easy to be a hero. A true hero should not be afraid of pain or death just like the great legend Theseus. At the same time, these heroes must be like the extraordinary hero Odysseus, who is successful in his heroic journey.

In conclusion, Hercules lived a long life of heroism and adventure. His heroic journey ultimately applies several of the stages of heroism. It is possible to relate many other mythological stories to Campbell’s stage

One very interesting aspect of the human experience is the manner in which certain themes appear again and again over time, in literature, religion, mythology, and culture regardless of the geographic location, the economic status, and the time period. To create this kind of effect to audiences, Disney mixed well-known stories and characters with tonned-down mature content with allusions to American culture.

Also, the idea of a woman that found herself equal to a man was unfamiliar to the Greeks. Understandably, the Greeks felt threatened by such a lifestyle, but they were also fascinated. They consistently went against what was considered the normal female role and led lives like their male counterparts. Unlike some myths in Greek mythology, the myths that involve the Amazons are spread out over time and often have multiple variations of one myth.
