In regards to the source of existence in the natural world, Parmenides of Elea presents a series of controversial ideas that contradict the ideas of the philosophers who preceded him. Parmenides essentially claims that the world consists only of Being. There does not exist not-Being. Thus, in order to ascertain the truth, one can only conceive of “what-is” and reject completely in thought and speech all that falls into the category of “what-is-not”. The premises behind Parmenides’s claims are in opposition with the Milesian philosophers’ idea of an arkhe that is the basis of the universe. This essay will explain Parmenides’s claims about the nature and characteristics of Being, as well as his metaphysical philosophy in light of the material monism of the Milesians. I will begin by introducing Parmenides’s distinction between Being and not-Being. Parmenides begins with the narrative of a chariot ride that brings him to a goddess. The goddess enlightens Parmenides about two paths of inquiry: (1) the Path of Persuasion, and (2) a path that does not exist. The first path is based upon truth and is a path “that is, and… is not possible for it not to be” (B2 3). The other path is but a figment of mortal’s imagination and is a path “that is not and… is right that it not be” (B2 5). Here, Parmenides claims that one should not follow the latter path- the Path of Opinion- because it is “a path entirely unable to be investigated” (B2 6). In essence, this path does not exist and
