The empire of the Third Reich and the notorious Nazi Party will forever go down in history as one of the most brutal and evil government organizations of the 20th century. Inspired by the ideologies of ethnic cleansing and how Germans should be the purest of all races, these ideas became rampant all across the country, and many citizens believed that this horrible wrongness could be justified, it would be for the greater good of the true Aryan people. The Nazis sent millions of innocent minorities to their deaths because they were seen as unequal and “life unworthy of life” However, history likes to forget the hundreds of thousands that didn’t die in camps, but died in hospitals at the hands of trusted physicians. These ideas were born into a time when the very concepts of what race was and how we differed as human beings was just starting to be explored. For centuries people had lived in an age of ignorance, but that time was coming to pass. The age of religious hysteria of the Great Awakening was slowly fading, while the time of science and engineering was developing. People knew very little about the world around them, and wanted to become educated to the theories of science. People knew that different races existed, but wanted to know why. God had indeed created them differently, but for what purpose? This question and more sparked society’s curiosity into the new topics of race and origins. Scientists were very intrigued about the development of the human and devoted many years of study. One of the most famous researchers was naturalist Charles Darwin, who wrote The Descent of Man in 1871. Darwin compared man to animals, and that in order to produce healthy offspring, the fittest could only survive to pass on the desired traits. “With savages, the weak in body or mind are soon eliminated; and those that survive commonly exhibit a vigorous state of health.” Darwin also agreed that races were indeed different species of the human race. Races had “…many differences in structure and constitution.”. Scientists even compared blacks skulls to the ones of chimpanzees, noting the similarity in contrast
In January 1933, Adolf Hitler capitalized on his appointment to Chancellor as a new government began forming around him. Conservative politicians responsible for placing him in power had envisioned a way to harness Hitler and the Nazi party (also known as the National Socialist German Workers’ Party) to establish an authoritarian government by replacing the republic. Hitler, recognizing the circumstances, masterfully established his own totalitarian regime and maintained complete control. In 1945, a dozen nations had worked together through more than a half decade of warring finally succeeded in removing Hitler from power only after they had committed heinous war crimes known as the Holocaust.
THESIS: Scientists and other intellectuals recognize the modern concept of "race" as an artificial category that developed over the past five centuries due to encounters with non-European people. Even though people still attempt to organize humans into categories according to their race, these categories have been shown to have no scientific basis.
Hitler used many tactics to control German society during the Nazi era; his outlook on how women should act is embodied in the Speech to the National Socialist Women’s Association. The speech was given by Gertrud Scholtz-Klink, the organization’s leader, with the intent to convince women to take their place in Hitler’s Nazi movement. The emphasis on women’s natural roles in the home, as mothers and wives, and the discouragement of women’s right are manifested in the persuasive language of national identity and involvement. Hitler uses Scholtz-Klink to fight for the minds of German women in a speech that asks for feminist ideals to be cast aside all for the good of the country.
As of 1921, Hitler had replaced Anton Drexler as a leader. He was committed to his cause, energetic, and a brilliant speaker, gaining him loyal supporters. Hitler did not have confusing or odd ideas; he had simple and clear ideas that many people agreed with. Hitler also provided the German people with scapegoats to blame for all the problems in Germany. Among these scapegoats were the Allies, the Treaty of Versailles, the socialist politicians who signed the Treaty, and Jews. Hitler's meetings were so successful that his opponents tried to disrupt his meetings, so he established the SA to protect his meetings and disrupt other parties' meetings. As of 1923, Hitler had given the Nazi party a high profile although they were still a relatively
A horrid event known as The Holocaust took place in 20th century Germany. It all began when Adolph Hitler was appointed as chancellor of Germany on January 30th, 1933. Soon after, Hitler gained a numerous amount of followers and rapidly developed his Nazi Germany. Led by visions of racial purity and spatial expansion, the Nazis mainly targeted Jews. In addition, Nazis also targeted Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and disabled people along with anyone who resisted them. This tragic event lasted a total of 12 years.
The Holocaust is essentially one of the most horrific and remembered acts of genocide within history, it’s estimated that “between 1941 and 1945, five to six million Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazi regime, its allies, and its surrogates in the Nazi-occupied territories ” (Jones 2010, p. 233). A majority of these killings were implemented by the German Army, but the German Army was not solely responsible for these horrendous crimes. As there was a majority of seemingly normal citizens ordering and engaging in atrocious crimes. These citizens were recognised as policemen, camp guards, office workers, doctors and nurses, their crimes were horrific and were performed in seemingly normal environments or situations. A majority of these people had
Fascism was around approximately forty years. From 1921-1943, Mussolini was the Fascist leader in Italy and Hitler was the Fascist leader in Germany. Many people thought Fascism could improve their countries because the leaders who stepped up to power, promised great improvements. They also convinced the citizens that they had nothing more to worry about. When Fascist leaders were brought to power, they promised the people their lives would be better and their country would be saved. Fascism was good for people who complied with the rules, but not for those who talked against their leaders. Fascism in the 1920’s lead Europe to support of the middle class and economic instability.
Doctors of the Holocaust For the doctors of the Holocaust killing became the prerequisite for healing. The Nazi doctors at the death camps tortured men, women, and children. The doctors made injections with lethal germs, sex change operations, and removed organs and limbs. For a doctor, phenol injections were the most literal example of the entire healing-killing reversal.
A relatively recent topic, meaning in the last one hundred year, within society is the concept of race and if it is biologically true, this meaning that evidence suggests a biological reason behind the different categories of race that are independent from social, economical, or personal views. This type of discussion can raise many concerns, questioning the possible social constructs revolving around race and its reason for being used in society today.
“Differentiated races are fixed either by nature or God. You cannot escape your racial classification (Weidman, 2006).” This is the fifth basic belief of ideology and instantly establishes a basis on why race has survived in the twentieth century. There will always be scientists, philosophers, doctors and historians examining the origins and the continuation of race. By examining their research we are able understand this color line and how it has impacted the twentieth century.
“To forget the dead would be akin to killing them twice,” Eli Wiesel. These words really reflect the groups that were forgotten to the Holocaust. Many more lives were taken than just the Jews, in fact, the Polish, the Gypsies, and the mentally and physically disabled were some of the main targets for the Nazis. Few people realize that more than just Jews were persecuted during the Nazi regime, so they could perfect their so called “Master Race”. These groups were deemed “defective,” did not have the right to live with the “Aryans” or the “Master Race,” and had to be eliminated along with the Jews. The Nazis did not stop just at the Jews, but planned to eliminate all that were thought to be “defective” or “racially inferior”. As Simon Wiesenthal once said, “The Holocaust is not only a Jewish tragedy, but also a human tragedy.”
Even though Germany was left in a period of struggle and economic weakness after WW1, Adolf Hitler would take a stand by creating a party that would help refine the structure of the economy. This party, when abbreviated, was called Nazi, would also create harsh laws and unrelentless punishment. Due to the Nazi party’s quick growth, there was an immediate impact on lifestyle and politics for the people of Germany. The long term impact brought forth by the consequences or legacy of the Nazi party included a population decrease and an increase in deaths. To make both of these impacts, Hitler had to overcome many hard challenges.
In the mid-nineteenth century, people focused more on the question from the New Testament of whether all humans are from “one blood” (Fredrickson 2015: 66). Others believed that people originate from three to five different species of which were all created separately and contain different aptitudes. In England, scientific racism did not become popular until the mid-nineteenth century, due to the strong evangelical Christian beliefs that all human beings are decedents of Adam and Eve (66). The Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, attempted to classify humans into categories in 1735. He believed that different types of humans could be classified as monstrous and mythical. Among these types included Africans, Europeans, Asians, and Native Americans. He described black people as “crafty, indolent, negligent… Governed by caprice” and Europeans as “acute, inventive…Governed by laws” (56). Voltaire was mainly hostile towards Christianity. Because of this, he disliked the Jewish people for being connected to the New Testament. He claimed that each human race was a separate species that developed at different rates. The Jews all contained a set of undesirable traits that were permanent (62).
The evolution of human being has been linked to human variation where the variation will be in reference to the biological aspect of the human being which will relate to the racial differences that may include the physical differences, as well as the skin, and the skeleton of the human being. However, despite the variations which may be seen in terms of race, in the current world today, human beings belong to the same particular species which is normally known as Homo sapiens.
In the essay The Descent Of Man by Charles Darwin excerpted from his book The Origin Of Species (1871), he tries to describe evolution through the natural selection of accumulated favorable variations in an organism that in time form new species within which the fact that man is descended from a lower-organized life form is prescribed to, by giving evidence of similarities of the characters of man which determine embryonic development, bodily structure, sexual selection, cerebral system with those of lower-life forms and in which he evidently succeeds and it is evident that man is not a separate art of creation and is descended of a common progenitor like all other mammals and though questions can be raised against his theory in terms of
