Like many people my age, media is a huge part of my daily life and is prevalent in all my memories. Media such as photography brings to life memories I otherwise would have forgotten, while the internet allows me to connect with others from across the world and gives me access to resources like Khan Academy to aid me in school. Media also has more negative impacts, such as interfering with family time. Whether its effect is positive or negative, media has influenced my life since the start and this reflection helped me realize that.
One of my first memories is of me at three years old, sitting on our old couch watching the PBS Kids television show Zoboomafoo. Besides a vague recollection of a monkey (lemur?) and two brothers, I do not remember much about this show, other than the fact that it taught me about animals. I also remember being quite fond of the television shows Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, and The Big Comfy Couch (I was obsessed with the latter). Educational computer games were also part of the very first media I remember consuming. Because media is such a regular and consistent part of my life, its impacts did not immediately stand out to me. Media’s influence on important moments of my life was substantial though, a key example being how I met my current best friends. It is first useful to note that being exposed to fictional novels when I was younger, such as Harry Potter and Magic Tree House, led to my love for reading and consequently my joining of the
In our society, media is constantly being used not only to communicate but also to learn about what is going around the world. The web gives the chance to share news and even lets people talk to one another. The internet spreads information and ideas quickly and reaches out too many people. Much of what our society sees and reads often come from sources provided by the internet. Based on these sources, knowledge is gained, wither it is real or fake. Constantly seeing media gives our society the idea that it is real. Videos, music, and photos are a way of spreading ideas clearly to more people. Due to this, ideas such as the end of the world sparks conversations and creates theories.
The controversial debate regarding whether media positively or negatively influences society increases each day. Despite the ability to connect with people worldwide or to stay informed with current events, any particular media can be detrimental to human development. Society pushes ideas through the television and web that can cause some form of attachment whether it be an emotional or physical one. The rise of dependency on media results in it transforming from a leisure activity to a habitual routine.
The influence of the media on psychological human development is profound (PMC, 2003). Media influences do play a vital role in shaping a person’s behaviour, particularly in adolescent and young adult years. Media affects society and can control how people interact and behave, also contributing to what is socially and culturally accepted (raisingchildren.net.au, 2015).
Media literacy helps us understand our own habits and deal with the constant media around us. To increase my own media literacy, I estimated how much time I spent using media, and later tracked how much time was spent using media. This data opened my eyes to the amount of media I exposed myself to daily and helped me determine whether media positively or negatively affects my everyday life. Tracking my media usage, taught me about my own habits.
Many things contribute to how a woman feels about her body. Peer pressure, family history, and age all play important roles in how people feel about how they look. The media can also play a dominant role on body image, as it almost always ties success, health, and happiness with being thin. To clarify body image, it is how you see yourself when you look in the mirror or picture yourself in your mind. With the constant exposure to media images of the “ideal” female body it is presenting an unrealistic “ideal” difficult to achieve and maintain it can lead to depression, lower self-esteem, and increases unhealthy eating habits.
When a person thinks of the word “criminal” they will probably say it is a corrupt, unintelligent individual that has committed a horrible crime. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, the word “criminal” is defined as “any person involved in illegal activity”. They are often portrayed in novels and movies as horrible and sometimes even inhumane creatures, but being labeled as a criminal could mean the individual has done a crime that was ethically wrong also. Once a person is labeled as a criminal they often face an onslaught of unfair and sometimes unjust prejudice. In addition to being looked down upon, people tend to disregard the accused’s moral stature and their personal dignity. Long ago people thought criminals were awful beings, but today people have less of a harsh definition of criminals. In some ways people today idolize the way criminals act and what they do. The media portrays criminals to be a certain way and that allows society to somehow admire criminals more.
Growing up in the 90s, my family mainly shaped my cultural life until technological advances, such as the personal computer and colored television arrived. My family purchased a colored TV, and as a child, all I wanted to do was watch cartoons. Early on, my mother would limit the time my brother and I spent in front of the TV, and I never understood the logic behind it until recently. Similar to my family, mass media has altered how we communicate. In fact, there is an over abundance of media in present day life. For example, many households have embraced and welcomed personal computers, Ipad’s, and TV sets into their living rooms. In the American society, an average American spends about 1,600 hours a year watching television (“Characteristics of Culture 51”). As per the U.S. Census conducted last year, for many Americans, access to computers and high-speed Internet connections has never been more important. We use computers and the Internet to complete schoolwork, locate jobs, watch movies, access healthcare information, and find relationships, to name but a few of the ways that we have grown to rely on digital technologies (“Computer and Internet 2013”). In the past, families would read the newspaper or talk to a neighbor to find out about current events and information.
Media has a large influence on how people live their lives. The different media that developed in the last century provide entertainment, relevant information, and influence what we buy and how we act. Some of the significant developments in the evolution of mass media during the last century include Film, Radio, Television, and the Internet.
Print media and internet have been a great influence in my life since my childhood. Since childhood my habit of reading newspaper and magazines have widened my world from the small space of my room. The second page of the daily newspaper highlighted the
The media and technology impacts socialisation by becoming a determining factor that sets trends on how communication and knowledge sharing is processed. I have conducted a research using a questionnaire to analyse how media and technology affects socialisation between generation x (born 1965-1976) and generation z (1996-2009).
Media is a powerful tool in our society today. Jim Morrison once said, “Whoever controls the media, controls the mind.” Media is all around us, it has changed the way we live out our daily lives. We live in a world were life without technology does not even seem possible. In the United States over “80% of adolescents own at least one form of new media technology” (Ray) and a study by a national Kaiser Family Foundation found that “children aged 8 to 18 years had an average media usage time of 6 hours and 21 minutes daily” (Ray). With media taking on a central role in the lives of these young children there are both positive and negative effects. But because of emotional and physical concerns, media does not have a positive impact on children and adolescents.
Authors Medoff and Kaye noted how electronic media has several effects on individuals (Tuning in to Electronic Media, 2011, p.6). Moreover, they explain how the effects can be categorized into three general areas specifically cognitive, emotional, and behavioral (Tuning in to Electronic Media, 2011, p.6). From these three general categories one can easily see or rather understand just how influential electronic media has impacted individuals.
All across the globe, media is seen everywhere. Billboards, magazines, television, the Internet, newspapers; it’s everywhere! Every day, each individual is exposed to some sort of media. It has now become an integral part of each individual’s life. Media is the main source of mass communication; whether through television, radio, newspapers, and/or the Internet. Prior to the 19th Century, letters, smoke signals, telegrams and carrier pigeons were the common ways of communications. Whereas now, media has managed to secure the attention of people of all age groups and genders and has provided them with several effective means of communication and has influenced many aspects of their lives. For instance, from influencing consumer needs and decisions via advertisements to providing feasibility in daily communication to eliminating any unnecessary upfront interaction, the media is every where and is ineluctable.
Different theories have been utilized to dissect the media and its effect on the general public. The ascent of the m
I have always been near media technology ever since I was little. My mother would play me music from her media player, but she didn’t even know to download music on it, so my sister had to help her. I used to watch a lot of tv when I was younger because it was relaxing to me, I still do it now to help me with my school work especially when I watch the animal planet channel or geographic channel. My mother and sister would let me use their phones or computers. Now, I can help them do anything person or informational on the computer. My personal experiences using media have been very helpful so far, especially when I go on my social media sites to be in touch with people. Media has helped me become in touch with what’s happening in the world
