Sports mascots are symbols for a sports team, a university or any organization. Those symbols representing the organization in a funny and entertaining way. It does also unify the team’s supporters around a symbol, a color and even certain characteristics such as bravery, speed, and victory. The main purpose of those symbols is to unify and to spread an energetic atmosphere around the supporters. However, when a mascot or a sports symbols represent a certain race, a minority like native American, the positive message that symbol is supposed to convey is certainly misloaded. Representing native Americans as a mascot of several sports team in the USA is wrong and inappropriate, because the idea of representing a group of people as a mascot is wrong, and because the image those mascots and symbols portray is not only harmful to native people’s feelings and self-esteem, but also, they support the negative stereotypes of native Americans. Representing a group of people, especially a persecuted minority, as a mascot is not accepted, and pose a problematic especially in a multicultural society. A multicultural society is unified by the notion and the feeling of citizenship among all their members, despite their race, ethnicity or their beliefs. Further, if what unified us and made us feel as a one is a citizenship, mutual cultural respect among all different groups in the USA is crucial.
