The Old Man is an autocratic leader that can make wise decisions but refuses to take any advice from its workers. The Old Man’s behavior exhibits that he not only dislikes feedback from his workers but also treats them very poorly if they make a mistake or argue with him. The autocratic leadership style can be effective in some matters where the leader doesn’t requires any feedback from the workers but in the long run it demoralizes the workers and also causes them to be afraid of the leader. This type of leadership style can prove inefficient, as the workers simply don’t feel involved as no attention is paid towards their feedback. This is an ineffective leadership style and cannot be used in modern day organizations (Vugt, et al., 2004). The feedback of the workers is important as they are the ones who do the bulk of the work. They cannot inform the leader about anything unpleasant as well as they cannot give any feedback. The Old Man is therefore using an ineffective leadership technique and it can …show more content…
He is also said to be the biggest and wisest walrus, and therefore also enjoys the power of knowledge over others. His workers respect him out of fear, and are ready to carry out his orders without questioning his motives. It can be said he holds referent power over his workers as he commands respect backed by social fear. The Old Man’s strategy affects the whole herd as he is responsible for making decisions for them, but he can also punish his employees for arguing with him since he’s an autocratic leader. The Old Man also holds coercive and reward power over them even though there are no rewards for his workers. All of these sources make him the feared and wise leader of the herd. Some of these sources are gained because of individual characteristics of the Old Man, while some are just the perks of autocratic
I use to work for an organization where the owner always thought his way was the right way. He never took any one advice or ideas, he felt that because he was the boss his way was right. The way he ran his organization made it very difficult for anyone to work for him. In James Clawson Level Three of Leadership Chapter 22 pg 295. A leader who pays careful attention to that fact and includes more people who are going to be better armed to avoid unintended consequences. He never followed this concept if he was willing to get feedback and suggestion from his employees it would have help his organization a lot. He was a Level One leader he didn’t care too much about how anyone felt, he just wanted you to come do your job.
The Terrible Old Man is a short story written in 1920 by H.P. Lovecraft, who was a famous author of sciene fiction, fantasy and last but not least horrer. I will, by analysing the characters, the setting and the ending, try to interpret and find the main theme of this story.
There are four main leadership styles, the first being Autocratic style which the manager retains as much control and decision making authority as possible, the manager does not give employees any input or consultation. The next is Bureaucratic which is where the manager manages ‘by the book’ which is where everything must be completed according to procedure and protocol. Mangers using this style will only consult with those above them in the chain of command. They simple enforce the rules of the workplace. The next style of leadership is Laissez-Faire which is also known as the ‘hands off’ approach to management. The manager usually provides little or no direction and give employees as much freedom as possible. All power is given to employees and they are to dictate their own work ethics. The last leadership style is the Democratic style which is also known as the participative style and this is where employees are encouraged to be a part of the decision making process. The democratic manager keeps their employees informed about everything that affects
Our societies, countries and the world at large are not enjoying the best of leaders and leadership today because bad leadership style such as authoritarian leadership style. In this type of leadership styles, citizen especially in the under developed and developing countries such as in leader and a where the leader believes that all power resides in him, an donly him has the power to make decision and exercise control, reward and publish instead of a democratic management style. Such organisations or countries is always a failure.
“You, too, my child?” (History) were Julius Caesar’s alleged last words, spoken to his protégé, Marcus Brutus, as his own trusted senators took Caesar’s life. From building the first inroads into Britain, to conquering all of Gaul with his powerful army, Julius Caesar paved the road for the Roman Empire that history has come to know. Julius Caesar was one of Rome’s most influential leaders that fought many battles and evolved all of Rome while serving as Dictator for Life before he was unfortunately assassinated by the people he trusted the most.
How he acts towards his crew, for example, appears to be out of a jealously – they are whole and he is not. For this reason, he feels that he must make up for it by being stronger and more powerful than they are. He tries to control the men, for if he can control them then he is greater than they are, though they are complete and he is not.
The article, “The Authoritarian Personality,” written by Erich Fromm discusses the common and different characteristics between the two forms of an authoritarian personality. He starts to explain how one becomes a mature person. He states that to become a mature person, said person needs to have developed love and reason. He then states that an authoritarian character has not reached maturity, and therefore, has not developed love or reason. Erich Fromm continues to explain that the difference between the ruler and the ruled is how they start to feel “greater.” The way the ruled feels “greater” is by depending on their ruler for guidance and by following the ruler to become a part of the larger group. The way the ruler feels “greater” is by depending on the ruled to continue to look at them as strong and powerful. He then points out that one person can hold both the ruler and the ruled characteristics. Erich Fromm continues to explain the differences between rational and irrational authority and where these two forms of authority are found. He ends by saying that the understanding of love and reason, and developing said characteristics is the foundation to a person’s own authority and political democracy. While reading this article, it brought me back to all the times I have dealt with people who have authoritative personalities and how it affected me. As stated by Erich Fromm, all people with authority personalities contain components of both the ruler and the ruled.
A further aspect of leadership, which can also be believed to have a direct link with communication, is decision-making. Both leadership styles are similar in the way that ideas need to be stored before making a business decision. In an autocratic work place “decisions are made independently with little or no input from the rest of the group” (Riley, 2012 n.p.). However, in a democratic society “employees have greater involvement in decision making” (Riley, 2012 n.p.). Both these types of leadership have their benefits and disadvantages with respect to decision-making. In his research on different types of leadership, Joseph, (n.d.) stated that autocratic leadership style could be effective in a business environment as decisions can be made quickly without consulting with workers. According to Cherry, (n.d.) this type of leadership would be advantageous in situations such as the military where decisions need to be taken quickly. Though quick decision-making can be beneficial, it could be argued that it can lead to a demotivated workforce. Employees’ motivation decreases
The child of Hannah Chaplin and Leo Dryden, Wheeler Dryden was taken away from his mom as an infant. He was visiting India and the Far East as a vaudeville comedian when he initially gained from his dad that the popular Charlie Chaplin was his stepbrother. After a few activities, Wheeler at last joined the Chaplin siblings and their mom in the 1920s.
In Kipling’s “The Man Who Would Be King” and in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart two different cultures of people view gods equally important. Both groups know that the gods will determine their success, however in the characters of “The Man Who Would Be King” use the importance of the gods to make themselves appear as gods, and in Things Fall Apart the characters know that the gods are important for their success in life. My paper will examine how the belief in gods influences the characters of the stories. In Achebe’s
There are many examples of poor leadership behavior in today’s workplace. Inadequate leadership can be detrimental not only to a team within an organization, but also to the entire organization itself. I believe it is vital for upper management to ensure that their leaders are properly trained and aware of how to handle certain situations and employees. When a leader’s weaknesses are overlooked, large problems occur.
Enlightened despots believed that political change could best come from above; from the ruler. However, they were encouraged by the philosophers to make good laws to promote human happiness. How did these monarchs differ from earlier unenlightened monarchs of the past? The difference lay in tempo. These new despots acted abruptly and desired quicker results. They were impatient with all that stood in the way of their reforms. In addition, they justified their authority on the grounds of usefulness, not divine right. These new monarchs were rational and reformist and they regarded political change as possible and desirable. Frederick the Great, Catherine the Great, and Joseph II are good examples of Enlightened
Like the above case where the employees are neglecting their duties. With this style the leader directs the followers on the ways of working and the expected results. This is solely productive for routine jobs.
When we analyze the success of large corporations like Ford, General Electric and International Business Machines, it is evident that they had series of leaders who were visionary and believed in empowerment of people. When we analyze tough phases of a company or companies that had a fall and ultimate demise, we clearly see a linkage between failure of company and absence of effective leadership (Canwell, Dongrie, Neveras, & Stockton, 2014). The successful organization had leaders who made right decisions at right time and implemented them strategically. The implementation part needs excellent human resources and the ability to lead to them to get the task done. While different situations may need different style of leadership, the sophisticated manpower fueled by technological advancements and globalization have made some leadership styles less effective and some leadership styles to be highly effective (Feser, Mayol, & Srinivasan, 2014). This paper will discuss a tough situation faced in one of my former organization. The organization needed a different leadership style to tide over the falling sales and attrition. Three different leadership styles, their pros and cons, and the likely success in solving the problem will be discussed in this paper.
An effective leader influences their employees in a desired manner to achieve goals and objectives. Different leadership styles can affect an organization’s effectiveness and performance. The objective of this paper is to analyze the review of literature on various leadership styles over the past years and how effective and ineffective different leadership styles are in the workplace.
