When children come into the custody of DCFS and are placed into Foster Care they are scared, confused, lonely, and usually conditioned not to tell when they are being mistreated. Most of the children that come into “the system” have learned to accept abuse as normal or natural and are unaware that they are even being mistreated. Therefore, when they are placed in homes where this is occurring it is not in their nature to speak up. Once they are removed from their parents, they are solely reliant on the department for their protection and it is the department’s responsibility to provide that protection which has not always been fulfilled by the department or the foster care agencies. The department should be making reasonable efforts to provide proper services

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) is a strength-based agency that works with several different types of families and situations. The department works diligently to ensure that children are protected from neglect and/or abuse. As an intern at the Cape and island’s office, a majority of our cases involve substance use issues. In conclusion, even though people have made the assumption that DCF is in responsible for the recent increase in catastrophes, they are in fact, limited by the government statutes, experience a lack of able employees, and must listen to whatever the judge says and thinks. The government and the senate are in charge of making the laws that determine what DCF is allowed and not allowed to do. It is in their hands, not DCFs when these statutes cause children to be injured. DCF has no way to control the government laws or the judges in court but must change something to fix the system.
