The Other Wes Moore Book Review
The book I have chosen to read is called, The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore. This memoir is a written novel based on the author’s experience and perspective. It usually includes an experience the author has felt. In this story, I read about these two boys with the same name but different fates, which symbolizes different identities. This creates the conflict or argument of what’s happening in the book. This helps the readers realize that both Wes Moores has experiences life changing events that turned their paths into different directions. This story takes place in Baltimore, Maryland, which is where the two boys grew up. In this book, it focuses on 2 main characters that are two boys both named Wes Moore. One of them is the author of the book and the other represents another Wes Moore. Wes Moore (the author) is a friendly boy who has trouble living his life with his mother, Joy, and his sisters, Shani and

Furthermore, I also like how he added the theme and message about how a child needs a good role model or someone to look up to for good advice and decisions. For example, the other Wes Moore looks up to Tony but copies him towards stealing and killing. I like how the book states that if you have someone you can look up to, you will create a better life and a better future for yourself. However, I think the transition from first person point of view and third person point of view threw me off a little. Sometimes when I finish reading the book in the morning and continue reading later in the day, I pick up the book and start reading again. I usually get confused on which Wes Moore the author is talking about. I always have to read one or two pages previously to see whom they are talking about like he or I. To conclude with, I enjoyed reading this book and I think this book could help kids follow a right role model to have a better
In his book, “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates,” Wes Moore (2011) tells a true story about two men from Baltimore who have identical names but have different outcomes in life. He also illustrates the similarities of their life’s situations when they were younger, the decisions they made in life and their impacts, and the roads they took that ultimately led them to where they are today.
Wes Moore could’ve easily had the Other Wes Moores life by the littlest changes both of their lives could have been very different in many different ways. “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” This is true because their choices are what led them to where they ended up at in the end, one ended up very successful and the other Wes Moore ended up in prison.
The Other Wes Moore is a book about two young African-American lives that share the same name, Wes Moore. Both Wes Moores grew up with similarities, they both grew up in the same hometown. One of the Wes Moore is free and the other one is spending his life in jail. They both grew up without fathers. The author's father died in front of him when he was just three years old and the other Wes Moore barley knew his dad. The Author's father wasn’t there because he couldn’t be, and the other Wes Moore, father wasn’t there because he chose not to be. Both mothers were working hard towards setting their families and to support and care for their sons.
“The Other Wes Moore” is about two men who share the exact same name and lived in and out of Baltimore but, they have two different roads ahead of them. Author Wes wrote this book because he believes nurture outweighs nature when it comes to a person’s success. Author Wes uses rhetorical and narrative elements such as tone, foreshadowing, and characterization to convey his opinion. On chapter 2, page 28, author Wes writes “A bottomless chasm of insecurity and self-doubt that gnaws at them.
The negative choices an individual makes can prevent success in the future. The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore tells two stories that are similar yet so different. In the book, Wes Moore explains how he and the convict Wes both grew up with the same name in the ghettos of Baltimore, facing similar problems but ended up with completely different futures. The author Wes and the convict Wes both grew up poor and fatherless, but the author Wes turned out to be successful and happy. Meanwhile, the convict Wes gets imprisonment for life.
In the book, The Other Wes Moore it is difficult to believe the great similarities in the lives of the two Moores, who share a name and other aspects of life. The two were raised fatherless and were born in the late 1970’s in the neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. They also happen to have encountered similar experiences when growing up, but at one point one of them became a criminal and the other a scholar (the author of the book). The author of the book seems to be interested in the similarities of the two boys as opposed to their different experiences. The story is interesting and makes one imagine what would have become of the writer if he did not by any chance come across the people who guided him to become what
In the book “The Other Wes Moore,” Wes is a boy that gets in trouble way too often. For example he is in prison for life right now. It is his fault, yet he has other people to blame.Who was this to blame? His biggest inspiration is his brother, who sells drugs on a daily basis. His mother is another one to blame for. Wes himself put most of this on him.
The autobiography The Other Wes Moore was written by a man who was comparing the lives of two men, the author himself and another man who, coincidentally, had the same name. In an attempt to eliminate any confusion, I need to clarify to which Wes Moore I am referring, so, I will refer to the author as Wes 1 and the other Wes Moore will be referred to as Wes 2. It took me a few minutes to decide what to call them since my initial reaction was to say Good Wes and Bad Wes. However, if this course on cultural competence has taught me anything, it’s to not label people. I see now that these two men lived their lives making the best decisions they felt they could have made at the time, and I realize that terms such as “good” or “bad” are misleading and disrespectful. The similarities between the two are obvious from the start; both men are black, both were raised in Maryland, both had to grow up without the presence of a father, and both grew up in poverty. By looking at several social issues we can see how different types of support and opportunities made the difference between the paths of these men. I believe that through their family relationships, their environments, and their experiences their attitudes regarding their ethics and values were shaped, which, in turn, defined their choices.
When reading Frost’s poems “The Road Not Taken” and “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening,” the reader can draw parallels between the poem and the Wes Moores in “The Other Wes Moore.” The other Wes Moore follows the idea of Frost’s “The Road Not Taken,” with the concept of reflecting back on the past and wanting to go to down a different path. Wes Moore and “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening,” follow the theme of determinism to succeed.
“This is a story of two boys living in Baltimore with similar histories and an identical name: Wes Moore. One of us is free… The other will spend every day until his death behind bars...” (Moore, XI) In The Other Wes Moore, the author, Wes Moore, and the other Wes Moore both grew up in similar, yet different, circumstances and had completely different outcomes. This captivating narrative demonstrates how the choices you make, make you. In the introduction, the author Wes Moore validates this statement by saying, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” (Moore XI) The author, Wes Moore, shows the readers that a person’s environment, circumstances, education (or lack
Humans have come to a conclusion that all lives are different, but all go through many hardships and tragedies. The impact from a slight difference can vary to be very vast to very small, such a slight difference, however, can change a person’s life as a whole. In the book, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore there is a difference that can be identified between the author’s life and that of the other Wes. This difference, though can be very critical and is ultimately able to lead to a path of triumph or failure for an individual. The lack of involvement a mother has for their child can fundamentally deprive them from succeeding, and parent involvement has the opportunity to
When I read, I was able to pick out key events in both childhoods that created a difference in the lives of the men. For example, the other Wes Moore continued to sell drugs after he was caught, while the author Wes Moore was remorseful after being caught tagging a wall. Obviously, author Wes Moore writes the book with an effective

Readers should care about this topic because,
You can share the same name as one another, but that definitely does not mean you both share the same destiny. In “The Other Wes Moore” there are two boys which share the same name, but do not quite share the same story. Both of the boys grew up without fathers and in a neighborhood financially struggling. Both mothers working and relying on their parents to watch their children. “The Other Wes Moore” is a story that follows two boys with the exact same name who start off living very similar lives in Baltimore, Maryland. One of the boys live on to be an extremely successful man and the other one is living the rest of his life behind bars. The two men wondered how their strikingly similar path diverged into two completely different fates and then an argument formed. Are people products of their choices or their environment and expectations thrown upon them? The book proves that people are products of their choices. Both Wes Moores were raised by a single mom in the tough streets of Baltimore and they both were rebellious children who got arrested at a young age. Their similarities lessened as their choices and their mom’s choices contrasted. The more fortunate Wes was sent to Military school and he chose to make the most of it and become the best version of himself. His determination and hard work trumped his previous hooligan mindset, therefore his future was bright and fulfilling. The other Wes chose to follow his brother,
