Its very sad to know that his life would have been a lot different if no one was killed in the robbery. His life stopped right after he was convicted for life. He is not able to be around his mother or watch his kids and grandkids grow up. Also if he took the opportunities and changed his life he would have never been apart of this crime and his life would had been a lot different. if his life was different the author probably would have never known about Wes and this book would have never been written. This just shows how everything in life happens for a
Wes Moore (author) lived a similar life when he's compared to the other Wes Moore. The author Wes Moore didn’t have a father either but unlike the other Wes his father died when he was a young age, but he had siblings just like the other Wes. The difference between the two when it comes to siblings is the Wes Moore the authors siblings didn’t encourage him to do things that didn’t benefit his future. Wes Moore’s mom was really involved with Wes and wanted what was best for him so she sent him away because of his grades and petty crimes to a military school called Valley Forge Military Academy to try and
In the first chapter of “The Other Wes Moore” the author Moore talks about both his and the other Wes Moore’s childhood; including what each of their parents had to go through at the time. Moore discusses how similar their childhood was in that they both grew up with the absence of their fathers, and how both their mothers wanted to give them the life they never had.
Both Weses had several circumstances in common that happened early on in their lives. Moore narrates that he lost his father at a young age due to a medical misdiagnosis. The author says that with the loss of his father, his family had to move to the Bronx to live with his grandparents. The author Wes was the second of three children, and with the absence of his father, his mother Joy had to work multiple jobs to send him and his siblings to school. Moore adds that he was enrolled in a private school but skipped his classes often and was put on academic probation. On the other hand, the
In the novel, The Other Wes Moore, Moore discovers the way people shape our lives and influence our future by examining the effects of family support, influence from peers, and his experience with authoritative figures in his life. He sees this through the story of the other Wes Moore. A young man who grew up a product of his environment, single mother, and a brother who was to involved with the bad life to be of any help to him. With this Wes Moore's life was sentenced to where he is now. The author is astonished by the fact that although their paths significantly differed they weren't always so different.
In the book, The Other Wes Moore it is difficult to believe the great similarities in the lives of the two Moores, who share a name and other aspects of life. The two were raised fatherless and were born in the late 1970’s in the neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. They also happen to have encountered similar experiences when growing up, but at one point one of them became a criminal and the other a scholar (the author of the book). The author of the book seems to be interested in the similarities of the two boys as opposed to their different experiences. The story is interesting and makes one imagine what would have become of the writer if he did not by any chance come across the people who guided him to become what
Role models play a huge role in shaping an individual and the paths that they go down in their lifetime. Whether it is a good or bad influence, it will depend which path they will take that will determine their fate. Often family members, especially parents, act as the most influential factor in a person’s life. Coincedientaly, The Other Wes Moore, is about two boys who have the same name and who have lived in the same city. One went on to become a Rhodes Scholar, combat veteran and a White House Fellow. Whereas, the other Wes Moore is sentenced to life a in prison for robbery, which led to the death of a police officer. In this book, both Wes Moores’ are influenced by at least one significant other that has influenced them to become the people

In the novel The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates it tells the story of two boys with the same name but two very different mindsets in life. “Life and death, freedom and bondage, hang in the balance of every action we take” (xiv). Wes Moore (1), the author, has had many things that impacted to his mindset that led to good and evil choices thought-out his life. Wes Moore (2) had made decisions that set a wrong mindset that would leave him in one place for the rest of his life. The mindsets of Wes Moore (1) and Wes (2) impacted their chances with the law, their choices with education and their opportunities with employment.
“Children learn more from who you are than what you teach,” stated W.E.B DuBois. As illustrated by the quote, the people and the environment that an individual surrounds themselves with affects their future. The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore, is a narrative that tells the story of two males, who share the same name but take two different paths in life. The two Moores experience similar situations, however surround themselves with different types of people, resulting in different paths. One Moore is successful while the other is incarcerated, proving an individual’s environment influences ones future. Ultimately, after analyzing Wes Moore’s novel and Terry Pratchets quote in the excerpt, it is evident that the
Wes Moore lived only miles away from a boy with the same name and incredibly similar upbringings. Although they both chose to do some very questionable things as kids, they both got second chances to make things right. While Wes Moore, the author was interviewing the other Wes Moore, he states “From everything you told me, both of us did some pretty wrong things when we were younger. And both of us had second chances. But if the situation or the context where you make the decisions don’t change, then second chances don’t mean too much, huh?” This just shows that anything can change things no matter how small the incident. The major moment that I believe to have changed Wes Moore’s life is that he didn’t have any positive adult role models in his life. Even though his mother often tried to help him stay out of the gang violence and the drugs, she was unable to get through to him. After flushing the drugs he had intended to sell she said, “Not only did you lie to me but you were selling drugs and keeping them in my house! Putting all of us in danger because of your stupidity. I don’t want to hear your sob story about how much money you owe. You will stop selling that stuff. I will be checking your room, and I don’t want to ever see it in here again.” So his mother continued to try but was unsuccessful and Wes’s brother, Tony, was no help either. “Tony, who was about to become a father – making Mary a
In “The Other Wes Moore” the story shows how the Author Wes Moore and the Other Wes Moore are both similar, but yet unmistakably different. They were born blocks apart within a year of each other. The irresponsible Wes Moore becomes a drug dealer and has two kids before the age of fifteen. The other skips school all the time and joins a gang.

Wes Moore, author of "The Other Wes Moore" grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, army officer, White House Fellow, and business leader. The other Wes Moore is serving a life sentence in prison. The author became fascinated by the startling similarities in their backgrounds, but the different outcomes. The Moore's were born in Baltimore. Fathers were absence in their life. The Authors father dies the other Moore's father chose not to be in his life. ("Your father wasn't there because he couldn't be, my father wasn't there because he chose not to be."pg.3) The other Moore starts selling drugs, is in and out of jail and prison, and finally receives a life sentence for the murder of a cop during a robbery. The Author has problems and is acting out but has adults who step in to guide him although the choices are hard.
Wes Moore written by Wes Moore published in April 27, 2010. Where it covers the autobiography and a biography clash into what is called a parallel plot structure. Where a juxtaposition is displayed. Of two young boys that are oddly similar but both end up with to different fates. The book goes into great detail on how one became a convicted criminal serving a life sentence and one a Rhodes Scholar. The purpose of Wes Moore writing his book is to determine one's success. That being a Nurture vs Nature. I'll be debating how Wes’s own diction, experiences and his own writing demonstrates one’s failure of success
In the memoir, Discovering Wes Moore, the way the original Wes Moore and the second Wes Moore conducts their lives and the circumstances in which they were raised in directly corresponds to the ways in which they are different. First of all, one major difference is that the original Wes Moore lost his father when he was young, while the other Wes Moore's father left him and his family. These two distinctive events in both of their lives affected them in very different ways. The second Wes has to deal with the fact that his father chose to leave him, while the original Wes has to deal with his father’s death. Also, the original Wes went to Valley Forge in junior high school to get more serious about his
