The Pawn or the King?
A contradictory pair exists in the psyche of humanity. We somehow believe that we are both the metaphorical center of the universe and involved in some greater plan over which we have no control or no significant effect. The 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, directed by Robert Wise, shows both of these ideas: the existence of a higher power in the form of a more intelligent alien race and the self-importance placed upon a people by themselves-specifically a nation. The dichotomy between humanity’s egoism and its desire to shun responsibility prevents us from fully accepting one or the other. Egoism is not a uniquely human characteristic. However, it is something humanity takes to the next level. Primates and other hierarchal animals express the innate nature that is self-interest. For male lions, this self-interest is the only thing that keeps them alive. Contrary to popular belief, it is the female lion-the lioness-that forms the foundation of the pride. The lioness does the hunting, the nurturing, and the defending of the pride. Male lions have slim chances of survival on their own, and unlike the lioness, genetic (or familial) ties do not keep it in the pride. When ousted, they must fight for, scavenge or even steal food. The final goal of the male lion is to become part of a pride, as their escort, performing duties but also securing food for itself. A male lion will fight males in the pride for their positions of security. Its individual
They have specialized teeth to suit their diet and lifestyle. The large canines are the first thing you may think of when you imagine a lion tooth, but the molars and pre-molars are modified into what is called a “carnassial shear” and play an important role in lion feeding. Lions don’t chew their food like we do, they use their carnassial shear to cut and slice flesh into small enough pieces to swallow. Their diet can consist of antelopes, zebras, wildebeest and other large animals of the open grassland that exist in their territory which can expand as far as 100 square miles. Many of the mentioned prey can run faster than any lion, as I stated earlier the female is the meal provider for the pride, so all the females in the pride get together and hunt as a team. After the hunt, the group closeness does tend to fall to the wayside as they squabble over sharing of the kill. The male generally eats his fill first then the pecking order amongst the females, unfortunately the cubs are at the bottom of this pecking order, but at the end of the day the lion pride is a family unit and the male will defend it with his life. I see my family as a pride. We all love each other unconditionally and we stick
David Anthony Durham once said, “A king is the best and worst of men” (Durham). By this, he was saying that kings have the potential to leave great legacies or a trail of failures. As a result of kings being chosen by royal succession, rather than actual qualifications, many kings throughout history have been unfit for leadership of a nation. An example of this is The Count of Artois, Charles X of the France. He was uneducated and led a frivolous life. When Louis XVIII died in 1824, Charles X was faced the difficult task of becoming king when no one expected it to happen. He was ultimately unprepared for the job, and exemplified all the qualities of an unfit ruler. When Dr. Seuss wrote “Yertle the Turtle”, he was not only creating a meaningful children’s story, but also providing adults with an important lesson on leadership. He used Yertle as a metaphor for oppressive governance. Yertle’s actions can be compared to the actions of Charles X of France and other tyrannical rulers.
Lionesses take care of the young and also do all hunting. Despite this the men eat first but the men play an important role to they guard their territory from predators.
Richard knew what it was like to be king and to have his kingdom taken from him. He had power and he was always working to gain more power, but in the end, he lost it all. In result to Richard losing power, he has to hand over the crown to Henry. At this point, Henry now has gone from little power to ruling the kingdom. Henry’s son, Hal, also gets a taste of power. The power of Christ is also a focus that Shakespeare uses in his plays as he looks into the fate of each individual and how the power of God can change everything. Power and kingship have a great role regarding motives, in both Shakespeare’s plays, Richard II and Henry IV.
Very early the next morning, the knight and his squire set out on their travels. They stole silently away from the village without bidding good-by to any one; and they made such haste that at sunrise they felt themselves quite safe from pursuit.
Humans believe, and always have, that they can hold the world and all of its wonders in the palm of their hands. I, however, have never believed that the world can be truly understood, and have never thought of the human race as anything more than another
Power Kills “The day the power of love overrules the love of power, the world will know peace” (Mahatma Gandhi). William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Disney’s The Lion King are both about an evil brother that is so hungry for power that he is willing to kill his own brother. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Disney’s
Majestic, noble, and brave, this famous iconic wild animal on the planet has captivated the people since the beginning of time. They are most feared by other animals thus, known as the king of the jungle – no other than the lions. Member of the genus Panthera, the lion is one of the big cats in the Felidae family. A lion’s head and body size average about 4.5 to 6.5 feet and tail of about 26 to 40 inches in length. A lion also weighs about 265 up to 420 pounds and a size relative to a 6-foot human. These mammals are also carnivores. Lions have always seen hunting in groups called pride. While lions generally avoid a full-grown elephant, lions still prefer their preys large like the zebras, buffaloes, and giraffes. Poised as the top animal in the ecological pyramid, lions have strong physical qualities, fascinating reputation, and an unfortunate decreasing number of population.
Leo the lion asked the king of the jungle if he could have a meeting with all the lions to find a way to tell them apart. The king elephant said no because if other animals attack female lion because they are with their cubs then they might attack the male lions, so the male lion will have a better chance of fighting the animal that is attacking them.So it will protect the female lions and the cubs.
Did you know a male lion’s roar can be heard up to 5 miles away. Lions mainly live in woodlands, grasslands, and some desserts; vary in size greatly. The average male lion can weigh up to 400lbs where as female lions can weigh up to 280lbs. Also, both female and male are about 4 feet tall however, different length. The male lion can be as long as a little more than 6 feet long while as the female lion can be under 6 feet long. (Lengths do not include the tail) The African lion had four legs and consumes a variety of animals including: Zebra, buffalo, antelope, wildebeests, wild hogs, hares, birds, Impalas, amphibians, fish, giraffes, gazelles, ostrich eggs, reptiles, and rodents.A female lion can produce up to 1-4 cubs at one time. A life cycle
It is important for lions to live as a pride because they are more active and aware of their surroundings. According to the text, “ lions hunt in a pack.” They are clever and smart animals .“ lions can take down animals far larger than themselves.” They also need to be in a pack to be able to survive.Certainly, lions need to be in a pack to survive and to be able to take down far bigger animals.
A Lion Spirit Animal generally means that the person is independent, confident, and loyal to their friends and family. These qualities fit into my personality in some ways, like independence. Independence fits into my person due to my preference to work alone than together,
As the lion takes on the hyenas, he's gaining self confidence. Which is why the bullies have no effect on him. The lion defeats the 5 hyenas and the other animals praise him. Even in the real world where no one pays attention to him, he knows deep inside that they praise him. For what he has done for them.
The episodes of Pawn Stars and Barter Kings I watched, featured many of the techniques and concerns we have been discussing in class. For example, a major focus was on ensuring there was objective criteria to judge potential deals. These values ranged from bringing in experts to assist the parties to using market-value to make all determinations. While negotiations styles were similar for the team on Pawn Stars and the team on Barter Kings, they differed greatly when it came to position vs interest-based bargaining. I have focused on this aspect because of the contrast between the two different styles between the two teams and the different results that came from those styles.
Lions communicate through a range of behaviours and their expressive movements are very highly developed. They will perform peaceful tactile actions such as licking each other and rubbing heads. Head rubbing, or nuzzling, is a common greeting behaviour for lions. They also communicate through a variety of vocalisations including purrs, snarls, miaws and hissing. Their vocalisations also vary in intensity and
