My name is Aammarah Nahid, and I am a 10th grade student at LIS. What would you do if you saw someone hurting an animal? Most of you probably would not know what you should REALLY do. Good morning (afternoon) teachers, and fellow students. Today, I will be talking to you about animal abuse and cruelty. Specifically, I will discuss cats and dogs being abused, because they are the most abused domestic animals. Domestic means that these are types of animals you can have in your home. Who in their right mind would abuse a poor defenseless cat or dog? Unfortunately, people of all ages abuse animals. This includes senior citizens, adults, teenagers and even children. Sadly, most animal abusers and killers are teenagers. This mostly happens in china where they eat these poor domestic animals. Researchers say that violence against animals often represents displaced hostility and aggression stemming …show more content…
These include the SPCA, which is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Animal Aid, and the City of Burlington Animal Control Bylaw Officers. I attended the Animal Control office and spoke to Bylaw Officer Tanya. Through my interview, and literature I received, I found out that Animal Control rescued 669 cats in 2007. Unfortunately, in Ontario 1700 cats were put down because they were either too ill, too injured, or no one would adopt them. As I told you earlier, Rudy and the five puppies are now living happy lives in their newly adoptive homes. Every year, people rescue racing dogs called greyhounds. This type of dog is used to race and people bet on these races. Once the dog gets injured, too old, or doesn’t win any races, the owners will have the dog put down. My neighbor also rescued a dog from Hurricane Katrina. These were dogs that were separated from their owners during the storm and had no one to care for them. Animal Control in Burlington rescued 433 dogs in
More than 9 rescue shelters have been rescuing animals that were dying in Hurricane Katrina. Many rescue companies had been putting tons of money and shelters in certain places in New Orleans. The companies that have been putting all their work into the devastating tragedies that happen in hurricanes are ASPCA, Hope for paws, and Animal friends. Tons of people were looking for their pets and animal rescue organizations said there was 350 pets that missing and 587 pets were recovered by the rescue pet organizations. ASPCA one of the greatest pet organizations in the world that lend a big hand. ASPCA had rescued 674 animals in Hurricane KASPCA has done a lot for animal lovers out there in the world. They have donated and given away money to families and pet owners that have pets suffering at
The RSPCA, also known as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, states on their animal cruelty webpage in 2017 that animal abuse is the mistreatment of animals through the physical infliction of pain, neglect, harm, or any means that are detrimental to the health, safety, or mental state of an animal. Such means include starvation, beating, or even failing to care for an animal properly. Not only is it terrible to witness, but it leaves lasting effects on the humans and animals involved.
In the United States, about 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. The overpopulation of these animals and the fact that they have no homes leads to about 40% of them being euthanized (ASPCA). This is a global issue, but the root of it can be found within the local community at The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley.
Children who live in homes where animal abuse is present are often abused themselves and unfortunately, sometimes carry on with the cycle of abuse later on in life. “More than 80 percent of family members being treated for child abuse also had abused animals. In one-third of the cases, a child victim continued the cycle of violence by abusing a pet (“The animal abuse home violence connection”, 2013).”
The facility has not had to euthanize a healthy dog due to lack of space for several years. Programs have been developed such as the “special needs fund,” which allows for expensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and adoption for many dogs who may not of had that opportunity in previous years. However, cats provide additional challenges due to overpopulation issues. Last year approximately 800 treatable-rehabilitable/manageable cats had to be euthanized. However, programs such as the trap/neuter/release program, foster care in private homes, PetSmart and veterinary clinic housing/adoptions, and free cat adoption incentives greatly reduced the overwhelming difficulties with housing/adopting cats (Nebraska Humane Society, 2014).
What is animal abuse? For starters, animal abuse is when a person inflicts suffering or harm on any animal. Most people, all over the world own an animal; but there are still far more animals left out on the street. Homeless animals are either left out on the streets or are “thrown” into shelters. This became a problem because not all animals are domesticated. Animal shelters began as pounds. “When the system began to be used to impound wandering dogs and cats, these animals were often killed because little monetary value was placed on them” (Lila Miller, Animal sheltering in the United States: Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, 1) . This issue persists because shelter workers and others truly believe that an animal life has no value, but that is not true; animals are living beings just like humans with brains, hearts, and bones. A reported case was that “authorities had seized 23 puppies, 11 cats, and four adult dogs from a self-processed animal “rescue” after they were found in the “rescuer’s” filthy home.” (‘No-Kill’ Label Slowly Killing Animals, 3). This means that an unauthorized person hoarded many animals and forced the animals into an unsafe “shelter”. The shelter being a dirty home.
“It is quite clear that in abusing animals we abuse our relationship with animals, and that we abuse ourselves. We become less human to the extent that we treat any living beings as things” (R.D. Laing). There is a very evident connection between animal cruelty and cruelty to other humans. In studies conducted between 1983 and 2004, 60% of children who met the criteria for child abuse/neglect had families that were cruel to their pets. In 88%
There are many animals who deal with abuse everyday, and that is not okay. If an animal is neglected or abused the pet will be taken away and the caretaker will be charged $1,500. Animals are very loyal, such as dogs, dogs are one of the most loyal animals you can own. When abused, they don’t know where they went wrong. They only know that you are mad at them. Animals, such as humans, shouldn’t be abused or neglected. Most animals who are abused or neglected are usually abused unintentionally, but the second most are abused on purpose. The people who abuse animals on purpose sometimes deal with mental illnesses, were abused as children, or have a hard time dealing with stress or anger. Animals are just like humans who have been abused. They are usually skittish and shy. People tend to see animals differently than humans, but they are the same in my eyes. For example, if I locked you in my basement, starved, and beat you, I’d be charged with attempted murder and kidnapping. Pets have the same rights as you to live freely, but people don’t see it. You are able to live on your own and take care of yourself, but they
Animal abuse is when someone mistreats or inflicts pain on an animal. Even not feeding them is a form of animal abuse. Animal abuse is a major problem in America. When looking at why animals are treated the way they are today, it is important to think about the history of animal abuse, the rate at which animal abuse is reported, why people mistreat animals, and current animal rights advocacy groups.
Many people enjoy companionship with their animals; however, according to the American Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), “every 60 seconds, another animal is abused.” Animals are often neglected in ways such as improper feeding, dog fighting, cockfighting, and being bred in puppy mills. In order to end animal abuse, people need to be enlightened about the multiple ways animals can be abused. Awareness of activities surrounding animal abuse will help decreases animal abuse. Education is of utmost importance in preventing animal abuse.
The American Humane Association, whom since 1877 has aimed to protect children, pets, and farm animals from abuse and neglect, also gives insight to the correlation between animal cruelty and domestic violence. According to them, 71% of women, who owned pets, entered women’s shelters reported that their abuser had either injured, maimed, killed, or threatened the family’s pets as an act of revenge or in order to control their victims psychologically. Also, 68% of
The different types of animal abuse varies but the main one that everyone knows of is dog fights. People think that dog fights are fun, exciting, or just a thrill, but when you start fighting the dogs and making them aggressive, that prevents them from finding a loving caring home. When a dog fight gets busted and they get all the dogs out of there it would be hard to find them a home because of their aggression. This is sad because this more than likely means that they will have to put the dog down. I honestly do not agree with putting the dog down. Sometimes they do not want to put in the effort to make the dog better so they just take the easy way out and just put the dog down.
Reasons behind why people abuse animals also vary. There may be unintentional or intentional reasons. (Add a quote as your evidence and then explain the quote)For example, hoarding is unintentional abuse. Some people have many pets and don’t give enough attention to them all. Not giving enough attention to an animal is misuse, believe it or not. An intentional reason for abusing an animal is punishing them. For example, if a dog pees somewhere other than on its pee pad, the owner might hit the dog. The owner might think that it’s appropriate to hit them because it might teach them not to do it again, but it doesn’t help. A pet will get revenge, because it’s smarter than you think.
Unfortunately today there are many cases of animal abuse happening around the world. Animal cruelty or animal abuse can be defined as the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals for purposes other than self-defense. There are many different types of abuse such as using animals for research, using animals for entertainment purposes, abandoning animals to shelters, and animal neglect. We need to raise awareness and find a solution to these issues. Animals are suffering and we need to help them.
According to the Human Society’s website, there are over 2.7 million adoptable cats and dogs that are euthanized each year.
