The Philip Morris tobacco company started in 1847 on a small street in London (Sanders, Wisse, & Van, 2015). One of the primary goals is to be a socially creditworthy company, at both local and global level. Consequently this is the reason Philip Morris had passion for social performance. They began as a very small family business specializing in hand rolled cigarettes. In 1902, the company moved to New York City and merged. Even though the company stayed small by 1960 it was the sixth largest company in the United States. The company acquired popularity using their Marlboro Man advertising campaign. The Marlboro Man brought Phillip Morris to the top of the industry. Marlboro used the image of a rugged cowboy enjoying a cigarette on horseback quickly adapt men into enjoying their brand. The success of the advertisement was incredible. In 1954 Marlboro sales accounted for $154 million in cigarette sold (Stevenson, & Proctor, 2008). Phillip Morris growth was rapid in the United States in 1983. Manufacturers could not understand how ammonia improved the taste of tobacco. The tobacco company discovered that ammonia would also increase the tobacco volume in cigarettes. From there, the company began to grow into other businesses expanding on its outside market. Philip Morris accepted Miller Brewing Company, General Foods, Kraft and the merger between South African Breweries with Miller Brewing. In 2003 Philip Morris Companies changed its name to
