In life there is no need to be perfect because human beings were born to deal with their imperfections. Life only comes around once and one has to learn that being happy means that one has the power to accept that perfection does not exist in this life and he or she has to look beyond the imperfections. In Hawthorne’s “The Birth-Mark” states that obsession is dangerous and constantly seek for perfection in humans being, it is the perfect way to destroy them. The main character, Aylmer, is obsessed with perfection and his attempts to create a perfect individual, even though he perceived that something grave could happen. Hawthorne's story illustrates what could happen when a human being tries to subvert nature. One has to accept others the way they are because perfection is just an illusion. A person should only dream about continuous improvement, instead of perfection. Individuals who seek for perfection will always live unfulfilled and discontent with themselves. In this story the main character Aylmer, is a newly scientific married man who should have been focus on being happy for the rest of his life with his wife Georgiana. But, instead he becomes totally obsessed with the imperfection of the birthmark that Georgiana has on her cheek. He is struggling with the seemingly unruly hand shaped birthmark that stains in his wife’s face. She is a gorgeous woman who is as close to perfect as anyone can get.
