The disease progress goes through a series of natural stages (The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, 2017). Health promotion interventions/preventive measures can be applied during any stage of the process. The interventions and measures are to stop disease progression; therefore, it is a critical step of health promotion. There are many collaborative actions to empower patients to make these decisions based on the best of their interest. Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention are part of the collaborative actions. There are pre-extensive factors such as environment, economic, social, culture, and behavior factors which can increase ones’ risk for disease. The prevention health care is to decease or minimize these risks to hence the outcome. Primary prevention are intervention/measures that assists individuals take actions instead of preventing personal exposure to these risk factors.
Health promotion and disease prevention is a fairly new trend designed to preserve the health of Americans based on a public-private partnership (Williams & Torrens, 2008). Preventative care must be contemplated ahead of time, even when no symptoms are present (WFR, n.d.). Being educated and actively practicing preventive care is the best way to prevent diseases in the first place.
There are many ways that have been proven to help in preventing cardiovascular diseases; certain exercises and foods in particular. The American Heart Association gives a breakdown, of what you and should be doing to help prevent heart disease, depending on your age. They clearly state, no matter what your age is, you should be eating a healthy diet; this includes, eating a diet low in sodium, saturated fat, and trans fat. Sodium is the salt added into your food. Foods high in sodium are chips, table salt, crackers, pickles, sauces, dressings, and canned foods. Saturated fat is a molecule that has no double bonds, which makes it “stackable” and is considered an unhealthy fat. Foods high in saturated fat are; fatty beef, poultry (with
Some of the factors are globalization of trade, urbanization, ease of global travel, advanced technologies have boosted development around the world. High prevalence of tobacco use along with increase in unhealthy dietary prices and decrease in physical exercise contributes to increase in biological risks which in turn leads to emergence of non-communicable diseases. The existence of these non-communicable diseases has given rise to a cause for prevention programs to be implemented so that positive health behaviors can be encouraged. These programs are established to protect people from prevalent diseases and those ones that are currently in occurrence. People that have been infected with diseases can also find solace in these
Health promotion, Health protection and disease prevention are linked together. Health promotions focus on prevention of illness and improving an individual well being thru behavioral and lifestyle changes. Health protection focuses on a safe environment for the community by educating individuals on prevention and causes of communicable diseases. Disease prevention is based on three levels, primary, secondary, and tertiary care. Primary care involves decreasing the risk of disease thru health education and routine wellness examinations. Early detection and treatment to control and decrease risk factors are secondary care preventions strategies.
As health care evolves we can see how important primary prevention is in the efforts to prevent disease from occurring. It incorporate education such as hand washing to prevent the spread of germs , diet and exercise guidelines to maintain proper fitness as well as good state of mind and disease prevention such as hypertension and diabetes and immunization to prevent disease.
A few of the chronic diseases that crippling the country are heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes, arthritis, respiratory diseases, oral conditions and strokes. Chronic diseases are among the most common and pricey out of all the health care illnesses, they are also among the preventable with the right diet. Chronic disease prevention, to be most effective, must occur in multiple sectors and across individuals’ entire life spans. Prevention circles health promotion activities that encourage healthy living and fights against chronic diseases. The health benefits of not smoking are increasing rapidly (Whitehead & Dahlgren, 2006).
In the article, Totic presents the notion of health policy in the US and abroad as an irrefutable necessity as well as for health policies to be simple and in many ways effective when it came to proper execution of health procedures and proper distribution of both health information and other resources used in the health care setting. The author expresses the goal of an effective health care policy as one that ultimately governs and helps maintain the management of quality of life experienced by the citizens in the United States. Prevention touches not only the patient but also the healthcare system by and through less utilization. Maintaining and improving health is important to an individual for longevity of life and reduces healthcare costs for the both the individual and their system.
Public health promotes healthy living for each community through epidemiology. Disease prevention and control is the common goal of epidemiology, nursing practice, and public health. “Epidemiology is the study of the population in order to monitor the health of the population, understand the determinants of health and disease in the community, and investigate and evaluate interventions to prevent disease and maintain health” (Stanhope & Lancaster. 2008). Epidemiologists have developed many parameters to slow the spread of disease. For example, cardiovascular disease including hypertension, coronary heart disease, and
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and type 2 diabetes are four of the most prominent chronic diseases.(WHO, Geneva, 1984) People who do not have access to health care have no opportunity of preventing these diseases. Some of these diseases, if caught by early detection, can be overcome possibly leading to optimal health. Disease prevention covers measures not only to prevent the occurrence of disease, such as risk factor reduction, but also to arrest its progress and reduce its consequences once established. (4) Having access to these facilities also provides prevention of epidemic in surrounding community.
Prevention is one of the key ways one can reduce cost in health care for reason that informing others on how eating healthy, exercising regularly, and receiving preventive services such as cancer screenings, preventive visits and vaccinations can be ways for people to stay healthy. (CDC). A preventive service, such as HIV infection prevention, is estimated to save $355,000 in cost (Surgeon General). It has also been noted, that increasing the use of preventive services, that includes tobacco cessation screening and alcohol screening could save us 37 billion dollars annually in medical cost (Surgeon General). Aside from this, even simple recommendation from primary care physician to
Preventative Approach: This is a good strategy, because it’s basically preventing the problem before it gets worse, and working on a solution to fix it before it’s too late. When working with immature people it’s best to use this method because it involves monitoring the group meaning you watch them and see how they react to certain commands and what makes them act the way they do in that way you come up with a solution to fix the problem. How this solution relates to the topic is communication is key here if people don’t talk things out matters get worse, and this approach allows room for communication and finding a solution peacefully.
Everyday in our practice we are implementing different levels of health promotion without even thinking about it. Many times we are providing several different types of prevention to a single patient at one time which will help our patient, their family and our community live healthier lives. It is important that we evolve along with health care and continue to provide and take the initiatives for educating our patients along with providing health promotion.
In understanding the disease prevention framework, it is important to consider certain factors utilized in the formulation of prevention strategies and decision making. The levels of prevention, personal factors, and environmental factors are the critical aspects needed in place for proper prevention methods and evaluation.
