You may think, after having a great leader, everything is going to be alright in a country. But life doesn’t go as you plan. I too thought American History must be pleasant after Abraham Lincoln became the president in 1860. But what I read next, a civil war; leaving more than half a million people dead, wounded and missing. Was this Civil War certain? While the reasons for the war are more complex, racial slavery was the primary reason. Since the South was booming with the cotton industry and demand for slave increased. Southern leaders encouraged slave revolts and racial mixture. Although both the North and the South tried to reconcile their differences with major political compromises but all attempts failed. Lincoln declared, “We shall nobly save or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth”. And this started the conflict. Called the War Between the States by the southerners and the War of the Rebellion by northerners, the struggle finally resolved the great issue of the Union and the slavery. …show more content…

On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves. From that point on, the war officially became one over the matter of slavery. In December 1865 after the war, the Thirteenth Amendment was endorsed, finally freeing all slaves in America. But all this happened at a very high cost. The impacts were high on civilians in both regions; the imposition of conscription and high taxes, the increased workload of farm women, and the persistent food shortages and sky-high prices.
