One of the most popular controversys that even the Founding Fathers of America have been debating about since 1776 is the most just way of running the U.S Government. Even today, it has not been thoroughly established which principal regarding Utility, freedom, or equality is the most significant aspect of the U.S government. However, freedom has always been the most popular right that every American constantly struggle to fight for. The Principle of Libertarianism is the individual right that everyone is entitled to and shall not be interfered by governments policy or regulations, as long as these individual rights would not harm others as well. Considering the principle of Libertarianism, it does cater to the American People by not only allowing individual rights that may protect the people from government corruption but also help benefit the economy of America in which demands from the people are met and that brings the greatest happiness for everyone. Although, Libertarianism can not perfectly serve every aspect of a just government, it should still be the most prioritized principal of the U.S government because overall it benefit the most civilians compare to the other two principals. Economic disparities between the different social classes in America, has always caused huge dilemmas for the U.S government to decided upon and not give every single individuals disregarding social status to have the rights to choose their own faith in terms of wealth. For instance,
I am John Locke. I heard that you're going to have a meeting with the statesman. So, I decided to give you my ideas about the government that would inspire you. As you know it's really important to give citizens their natural rights (life, liberty, and property). Because I believed that everyone was born free, equal, and independent. And the meaning of my natural rights are life: everyone is entitled to live. Liberty: everyone is entitled to do anything they want to so long as it doesn't conflict with the first right. Property: everyone is entitled to own all they create or gain through gift or trade so long as it doesn't conflict with the first two rights. Another thing if the government agrees to give citizens their natural rights. I've
The government of the United States is able to function the way it is functioning today thanks to the 7 principles of government. The principles of this government includes Popular Sovereignty, Republicanism, Federalism, Separation of Powers, Checks and Balances, Limited Government, and Individual Rights. All of them are needed and used equally, but the most important principle of them all in my perspective is Individual Rights.
While reading the “The Second Treatise of Government,” you can notice and see that John Locke has a strong standing for civil rights as well as helping with the development of the Constitution of the United States. He states that the “consent of the governed,” is basically saying that communities are not put together by the divine right or ruled by. Paternal, familial, and political are types of powers that John Locke mentions that have all have unlike characteristics. He inspired others to believe in and want equal rights and democracy. John Locke talks about the state of nature, which basically states that no one has the power to be ruler of someone, as well as they are able to do what they want in a freely matter. In other words people are born just like anyone else that is born, and should have equally rights to property, health, and liberty, and that no one should have the power over anyone. Everyone should be able to live and enjoy his or her own freedom and wellbeing. However, the state of nature is not a guarantee to have natural laws, which could help with the protecting of one’s property. According to him having your own personal freedom was the true meaning of state of nature. John Locke thought that people were following his faith in human rationality through the declaration of Locke. John Locke states that if the government takes away from others for them to empower them then the people have right and opportunity to go against
The idea of liberty stems from the balance of power and equality among those who support this philosophy. The Constitution created a start for the United States to give liberty to the people, but the idea did not elaborate for the future of its citizens. The federalist believed that this power the constitution states should belong to the elite and intelligent individuals, thus creating a strong central government. Despite the strong support for the Federalist, Anti-Federalist believed such liberty should be shared equal among the people and not on the central government. For this reason, the constitution can be argued to have restricted American liberty because the constitution was not fully developed, leaving many to believe that the liberty was not guaranteed to everyone.
Liberty is defined as freedom from arbitrary or oppressive control, that mandates one’s way of living. A document commonly associated with this concept, is the United States Declaration of Independence, due to its assertion that all men are equal and have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration of Independence even goes on to state that men have the right to alter or abolish their government if they feel their government does not grant people the natural rights that they are entitled to. These two points were crucial to the document, as they explained why the United States thought of itself as an independent nation, not a colony, under the domain of Great Britain. When drafting the declaration, Thomas Jefferson borrowed from other documents, like the English Declaration of Rights, and the writings of John Locke, as both explained the limits of absolute authority. Due to the nature of the declaration, the document and the principles discussed in it would not influence the law of the United States. Additionally, when the founding fathers promised equality to all, they mainly meant to people similar to themselves, white men of property. The hypocrisy with the statements made in the declaration were acknowledged by some nineteenth century social reformers and activists. Though these activists agreed with the principles in the Declaration of Independence, they thought that Liberty could only be
In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson expresses unalienable rights as a ideal for the US government. It has been argued on National Public Radio that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are essential to America’s government(Doc B). Citizens need to be able to depend on unalienable rights without doubt that the government can take them away because they are rights citizens are born with. Sullivan believed the government should “place(s) liberty at the center of its concerns” in order to give the people the rights they deserve. This shows that unalienable rights are very important to the U.S. government in order to give the people the rights they deserve; however, it is not the most important one to the American society.
Even though the American colonists are their own entity, the British government still assumed control over the colonies. Situations such as the belief that the Parliament “had the right to impose taxes on the colonists” increased the distaste of the colonies to the British (Boundless). Though the Parliament had virtual representation, or “the members of Parliament spoke for the interests of all British subjects rather than for the interests of only the district that elected them” over the colonies, the colonies argued that since there is no direct representation, or “proposed form of representative democracy where each representative’s vote is weighted in proportion to the number of citizens who have chosen that candidate to represent them”
With this in mind, there are four main principles that became the base of the American government. In the Declaration of Independence, it is agreed that “all men are created equal.” This notion of equality does not mean the equality among ability nor the traits of the people and the way they live. In this case, equality among men means that no one is born more powerful than the other. Indeed, all men “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” (“Declaration”) These unalienable rights cannot be justly taken away from the people because they are innate and given by the Creator, which also means that no king– or anyone in a higher position– can take away these natural rights. Additionally, popular sovereignty is also one of the important principles. According to the Declaration of Independence, “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…” This means that the people are the source of the authority of the government. In other words, popular sovereignty is the power of the people. Finally, people have the power to abolish the government if “any Form of Government becomes destructive [of the unalienable rights of the people].” (“Declaration”) This principle gives citizens the consent to have the right to
Friedrich von Hayek views about government were the opposite. Hayek believed that in the pursuit of prosperity, society’s attempts at central planning will inevitably lead to totalitarianism. He believed that central planning was inherently undemocratic because the people of a nation would be subject to the will of a small minority, becoming a means for the ruling minority in service of “social welfare.” Hayek also postulated that socialism would be inferior to a democracy for assuring equality. The competition of the free market also would provide superior regulation to the economy because the market would adjust without input from any authority, unlike the coercive nature of central planning. Hayek stated that the only way to improve the
Have you ever been in a class where there were disagreements? In the late 17th and 18th century there was many changes that people did not always agree with and the people started questioning ways of living and knowing. They discussed the ideas of improving society, reason, natural laws, salon, and philosophers. What really was the major idea of the philosophes? The philosophes believed that greater individual freedom could improve society in several areas, these areas included: government, religion, economics and women.
Government and more importantly democracy in government has always been an important aspect of any society. Theories created about government seeks to shed light and provide insight to the masses so that they will be more capable of understanding what their government is all about, the policies that stand for and how accessible they are to the citizens of the country. The theorists being examined in this study are John Locke and J.S. Mills. These 2 theorists support democracy, and the rights of people to have a say in their government. They have shared their views on how a democratic government should operate and have influenced many other theorists and entire governments with their views governments as knows as the United
In “Christian Nation or Pluralistic Culture: Religion in American Life” by Charles H. Lippy, he writes about the early European immigrants that came to the United States with different religious backgrounds. According to Lippy, despite different faiths, these groups got along because of the similarity of their faith. This cause for the need to separate church and state, for it would have allowed advantages and benefits for one faith over the other. Despite this, problem is still arose. People have disagreed with laws that have been put in place in favor of one faith over the other. For example, in a town by where I live in New Jersey, the Blue Law is enforced. This is all retail stores being closed on Sundays due to religious belief that the sabbath day is a holy day of rest. However, this excludes other faiths that hold Saturday as the sabbath day. This allows the undertone that Christianity is above other faiths within our law system. It also creates a Christian normativity within our society. Lippy writes that the growth of different people and the strengthening of different faiths in numbers, “signals the
Does the desire for power result in a violation to society? John Locke’s Second Treatise of Government demonstrates how personal interests are the root of injustice. Personal interests possess aspects of self-concern and selfishness. Injustice is the result of personal interests, which leads to working against society’s idea of perfect equality. Private interests such as the craving for power leads to the elimination of equality, and equal opportunity.
In my views I believe that Matt aka John Locke had the best views compared to my actual views. When we conversed we talked about how that the building of the Versailles was an outrageous expensive and that taking of the peoples money to build such a tremendous structure, then taxing the people more money after building it was dumb and not need because to much money was spent on this palace. Yes it is a very nice palace but it was unneeded. In the following topic discussed among us was that of god given right. He believe that a King saying he has divine right to rule and that he sits on gods thrown is not okay. John believed that kings don’t have god given right. That assuming you are equal god is invalid and ridiculousness. I believe as me a student that a king is only granted the thrown if is a
John Locke was been one of Americas most significant figures who influence how the country’s political system works today. Locke redefined the whole nature of the government, his views were similar to Thomas Hobbes’ ideas (Hobbes concluded that people are incapable of ruling themselves because it’s in our nature to self-centered not need to a strong leader to control us), however Locke was more optimistic about people’s ability to reason to help avoid tyranny. In Locke’s Second Treatise of Government he identified the basis to a reasonable government. According to Locke a ruler should gain their authority by the people who will be governed because the duty of the government is to protect the natural rights its people (life, liberty, and property), and said that if the government failed to protect these rights, the people should have the right to overthrow its government. These ideas greatly influence Thomas Jefferson when writing the Declaration of Independence. Federalism has also greatly impacted the political system in the United States because it’s the relationship between the authority and people. There are many ways the government can be divided. For example, a cooperative federalism is when the federal government governs unlimitedly and forces lower governments to supervise and enforce national
