The Pros And Cons Of Abortion

There are two main political parties you can choose from in the United States, The Democrats and the Republicans. There are also third parties you can choose from. People can choose to be part of any party. We are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum. The right are more conservative and the left are more liberal. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics. With so many differences between the parties, finding topics or issues upon which constituents agree on can be difficult.

“How can the “Dream” survive if we murder children? Every aborted baby is like a slave in the womb of his or her mother. The mother decides his or her fate” (Martin Luther King, Jr). This quote, by Martin Luther King Jr, represents how Martin Luther King Jr really feels about abortions, and how abortions relate back to the idea of slavery. As abortions are spreading all across the world many people have wondered if there are any positives to abortions? If there are not any positives to abortion then people may wonder, what are the negatives to abortions, and how do other people feel about abortions.

Abortion is one of the most controversial topics and many argue that it's wrong, but I disagree, I am a strong supporter of abortions. An abortion is when a woman deliberately terminates a pregnancy, there are many medical methods used to perform an abortion. The techniques used for abortion have changed drastically over time and many cultures developed their own forms of abortions. Originally abortions were unregulated and many women performed abortions on themselves at home, which were very unsafe and many at home abortions resulted in injury or death. The two main methods of abortion as of right now are surgical and medical abortion, these are much safer than previous methods and rarely inflict any harm onto the woman. The surgical method is performed using a vacuum like device to empty the uterus of its content. The medical abortion can only be used early in a pregnancy and requires a woman to take a prescribed pill for the first seven weeks of her pregnancy.

In the 45th Federalist Papers, James Madison wrote, “the powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the state governments are numerous and indefinite.” In 1973, the Roe v. Wade ruling legalized abortion based on the constitutional right to privacy. This ruling declared abortion a right protected by the federal government as dictated by the Supremacy clause in Article VI of the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court's assertion of unlimited access to abortion as a federal concern violates states’ rights as it was wrongfully justified. Evidence offered by the fourteenth amendment, various court cases pertaining to abortion, and several philosophical arguments from renowned professors support the shift of the decision from federal to state power. Medical necessity is the only exception in which an individual should be granted unrestricted access to abortion.

Abortions^are^one of the^many controversial topics within the United States today. As defined by the 2016 Merriam-Webster dictionary, an abortion is, “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28^weeks of pregnancy.” Abortions have and will always be and will probably always be an opinionated topic.^Within^all^of^the controversy, two groups have emerged. These two groups are referred to as pro life and pro choice. According to Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context, those individuals who support pro life believe your life begins at conception, that being the case, abortion in any stage of the pregnancy is murder. They believe that any stage of life is valuable^and the^life of the^unborn baby has the same^rights as the mother. However,^Pro-choice supporters^believe that it is the woman’s right to^choose what she may do^with her own^body.

Abortion is protected by the Fourteenth Amendment, informed by the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Ninth Amendments. Supreme Court views abortion as a “privacy right” and a “liberty claim”. In the 1973 landmark case Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court applied this constitutional principle of privacy and liberty to a woman's ability to terminate pregnancy. Basically everyone should get to have certain rights such as privacy to have an abortion without anyone finding out. The pros of having a “Privacy abortion” is nobody needs to know your story unless you tell them. Reproductive choice empowers women by giving them control over their own bodies giving them right or wrong. Women who receive abortions are less likely to suffer mental health problems

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the procedures used to perform late term abortions are both safe and humane. It should be noted that there are mainly two procedures used, D&E(dilation and evacuation) and D&X (dilation and extraction). To understand why there is much debate about the humaneness of these two procedures, especially the D&X procedure, one has to comprehend what these procedures entail. “D&E is a procedure that may require, if the pregnancy is sufficiently advanced, the use of a forceps to dismember the fetus and extract it in pieces,”(Ballaro). Despite people's beliefs and opinions about abortion, there has been vast scientific research according whether abortion is or is not murder. People have little understanding of what actually occurs during the process when pregnant. In fact, when it comes to gathering data by non scientific researchers, most will say that abortion is all evil and should be illegal. Questions such as: When does life begin, what is a human being, and what is considered murder? Many have different opinions when it comes to these topics. We conducted several surveys based off of people’s personal feelings about abortion during the first trimester and integrated it. Society can be so judgmental no matter what you do someone will always have a different way of viewing it than you do, or you’re not doing it the way everyone think it should be done so you’re instantly “Judged”. However, in some states teenagers are required to have the consent of their parents or guardians in order to have an abortion. In California, you are allowed to have an abortion without parental consent, even if you are a minor, and the government will pay all cost of the procedure if you can not afford it. This is legal due to the Privacy Act that was passed in 1974 that stops the spread of information of individuals that are maintained in systems of records by federal agencies. It is up to the women to pick the “choice” to kill a human being. Though no matter what procedure is used the results are the same, a dead baby. Each year 1,500,000 babies are killed due to abortion. This means that 4,000 babies are killed daily. Even though women chose to have an abortion many usually do not know how the killings are done.

Abortions have become an epidemic in countries all over the world. It’s something people battle with deciding whether it is right or wrong. Certain individuals believe in Pro Choice and that abortion is a right that all women must have, for various reason such as not having finical, emotional, and relationship stability. On the other hand, there are also many people who believe that women should not have the right to abort a fetus under no circumstances. This view is also like the law in El Salvador. El Salvador has the world’s strictest laws on reproductive rights. The punishment for murder and abortion go hand in hand. El Salvador criminalized abortion 20 years ago and is one out of 5 other countries where abortion is illegal under no circumstance, even in the case of rape, incest or miscarriage. This law has led to the imprisonment of dozen young women. Women who’ve had abortions or those who have experienced a miscarriage can face up to 30 years minimum to 50 years maximum in prison. Recently in El Salvador, a 19-year-old student was sentenced to 30 years in prison after having a baby that was stillborn.

Abortion is a medical process that gives women the choice to terminate their own pregnancy, which has won acclaim from many around the world for being able to offer a unique ability for women. However, it has also received much backlash for the very same reason. In light of recent events, women’s rights to access abortion has been questioned. Some people believe that abortion is an act of murder: killing an unborn life, contrasting deeply with others who claim abortion should be a choice left up to women. Despite the opposition, access to abortion for women is crucial in all circumstances because the parents may not be ready to take care of a child, pregnancy can cause life-threatening health issues, and the right to control what is done with their body belongs to the woman.

Whether or not an abortion should be legal has been argued for years. It has become political and even personal at times. People discuss morality and parent rights, but do they ever truly consider the rights of the unborn? Everybody has his opinion on abortions. Some people think they are wrong and some people don’t find anything wrong with them. Abortion is wrong and should be banned.
