Considering that Senator Rodney Ellis is a democrat he would most likely be against allowing concealed guns on universities. At a press release in Austin on March, 18 2015 Senator Ellis released a statement in which he stated “As I’ve said before, this bill is a reflection of misplaced priorities. Instead of arming students with guns, we should be arming them with 21st century educational opportunities, better paying jobs and fairer wages, and access to quality, affordable health care.” In the same press He also expressed that our own founding fathers 200 years ago believed guns do not belong campuses. Senator Ellis believes that instead our priorities should be aimed towards bettering our education system rather than focusing on allowing students to carry concealed guns on campus. In 1999, Ellis was one of the many who supported the legislation that created the TEXAS grant program. This allowed lower income individuals to attend higher education after high school by providing them with funds needed. This provides a fair opportunity to everyone regardless of their financial status to attend school. Not only was senator Ellis in support of the TEXAS grant program, he also founded the Texas Legislative Internship Program …show more content…
For the past 20 years, those with a license have already been allowed to carry a conceal handgun on campus but not in the buildings. Why fix something that’s not broken? I believe Senator Ellis would agree. If for the past 20 years the law has allowed us to carry concealed handguns on campus and there hasn’t been many issues surrounding this, why would we take important time and resources arguing over extending the law to allow inside the buildings that would could best be used improving the education system. Instead, students should focus on their
One of the major heated issues with gun control has been the legislation of concealed carry on college campuses. According to Weeden’s (2017) article, “Guns on Campus,” Arkansas and Georgia have already passed bills to allow students and faculty to carry guns on campus. I can understand why states are doing this due to the amount of school shootings that have been occurring
Due to the recent upheaval of violent crimes on campus, many pro-gun activist have suggested that both the students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus. Those for this may claim that their rights have been violated because many college campuses refuse to allow weapons of any kind on campus. It is not the right to carry a gun which is in debate here, but rather it is whether or not guns should be allowed on a college campus. The Constitution of The United States of America already grants citizens the right to carry guns, and being in the south, I am by far no stranger to seeing a gun from time-to-time, but it is not appropriate for guns to be in a vulnerable area such as a college campus. There are already too many guns available to the public, and allowing them on an educational facility would greatly increase the likelihood of injury or death. Americans, as previously mentioned, have the right to bear arms, and this should be held sacred, and not infringed, taken away, or limited. However, stricter firearm control should be implemented for those who chose to carry a concealed weapon, and gun control should be done by having stricter certification processes before a firearm or gun permit is issued, intensive psychological evaluation for the person or persons applying for a gun permit or a gun,and greater educational requirements for gun owners and firearm safety.
The difference on perspectives has been a major issue especially after President Obama’s constant effort to pass more gun control laws. In contrast, the presumably and deeply Republican state of Texas, which has very few restrictions on guns, has just passed a law that makes concealed carrying on college campuses legal. Such law has been a controversy and had divided reactions from Texans all around the state. The problem that is tried to solve with this bill is to prevent more mass shootings from happening in the facilities of higher education institutions. It is very important to
A concealed carry permit makes it legal for people who are trained and qualified to carry weapons. Why do we in any case want to put more weapons on the learning institutions when we are trying to avoid violence? The government should ban these permits on the learning institutions because it is adding more risk to students around the nation. The president of the Dallas-based north Texas Chapter of the Brady campaign which is the countrywide organization favoring gun restriction, McCartney, said that if anyone was to be armed in school, let it be a security officer. Schools should also be the sanctuaries where the students can learn and grow in an environment free form any gunfire risk. When people join the learning institutions, they always want to go to a place where they can learn, enjoy their time and meet new people. The students do not always want to live in fear of the guns around them in their entire living in the schools. By legalizing carrying of guns in the learning institutions especially the campuses, it is like
Republican Senator Brian Birdwell introduced the Texas Senate Bill 11, also known as the Campus Carry Bill, to the House and Senate on January 26, 2015. With Texas being a highly conservative state, supporters of this bill were largely consisted of Republicans and gun-rights activists. Many supporters, especially pro-gun individuals, argued the second amendment would be violated by not allowing those with a concealed handgun license (CHL) to carry a concealed gun on campus. They also believed guns can be utilized as a form of self-defense to further support the passage of this bill.
Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. Debate over permitting or restricting the concealed carry of a firearm on college
Gun laws have been debated for years now in America, and they have been debtated for various reasons. Recently, the idea of conceal and carry has been brought over to college campuses and schools around our nation. There are two main sides to this controversial topic, people who are for conceal and carry and people who are against it. There have been multiple bills proposed in florida to allow everyday people carry guns on campus. This topic has been a hot debate after incidents like the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting and even more recently the Ohio State shooting. Although the “Right to Bear Arms” is an amendment, conceal and carry should not be allowed onto college campuses and schools due to its potential consequences.
Allowing concealed weapons on campus has been around for several years now. Sides such as, Students for Concealed Carry, who advocate for the right to carry on campuses and the other opposing such thing. Former, Students for Concealed Carry Director, David Burnett wrote an article about the reasons as to why students should be able to carry on campuses. Burnett was the director for the group in 2011, he wanted to get the word out about this cause during his time. Burnett wrote several articles about the reasons to why students should be allowed to carry on campus. Also the websites states, “state-issued concealed handgun licenses should be allowed the same measure of personal protection on college campuses that current laws afford them virtually everywhere else.”(1) Burnett states this into his article because under the new law, only those who have a concealed handgun license would be able to carry. Those with licenses can freely carry in movie theaters, grocery stores, banks, shopping malls and even churches so why should a
The first arguement for concealed guns on campus comes from insiderhighered.com written by Kaitlin Mulhere. She states that so far eleven states are discussing on being able to carry a concealed gun on campus. There has been at least one bill that has been suggested in about half of the fifty states within past few years for guns on campus. So far, seven states have made laws allowing guns on campus. Kaitlin says that there are two views on the issue. One being that it is a constitutional right for one to be able to carry a gun. The second being that it will make campuses safer from shooters and other criminals. It was brought up in the beginning that armed people on campus could commit a mass shooting which worried many people. Kaitlin
He first points out three opponents’ evidences. First, McCann agrees with UT president Greg Fenves, who wrote a letter to Chancellor William McRaven, saying that Fenves believed presence of handguns at an institution of higher learning contradicts the mission of education and research, which is based on enquiry, free speech and debate. However, the author understands that Fenves is obligated to uphold the law. Second, the UT community has already taken affect by the law even before it was implemented. This is evident when Dr. Fritz Steiner, UT's longtime architecture dean, left for a job in regard to campus carry. He added that it will be difficult for Texas to keep pace with the market faculty when professors might think twice before accepting the offer to teach here. Thirdly, Economics professor emeritus Daniel Hamermesh is calling it quits, too. He wrote to Fenves, that he perceived there is a risk of a displeased might have brought a gun into his class and shoot him is significantly intensified by the campus-carry
More and more states are pushing for campus carry and universities and colleges no longer be a gun free zone. There will always be debates whether guns on campus are good or bad. Groups such as Moms Demand Action are criticizing legislatures who pass any gun bills, while Students for Concealed Carry are gun advocates. Despite the fact that not everyone will agree on the topic of guns on campus, we could soon possibly see a majority of public universities and colleges allowing
The decision for college and university campuses to allow their students to carry concealed weapons on campus is a risky debate that one should disagree with. A numerous amount of unfortunate events that have a chance of happening would result as a train thought if the decision was made. Various public schools below college level have been publicized throughout the years to have been involved with shootings, threats, or suicide with arms that were sneaked onto campus discretely, or exposed through a rageful manner fired at random innocent individuals. College level, there is already a majority of students that are above the age of eighteen or twenty-one, both ages having the legal privilege to purchase a weapon. This would increase a caution
On August 1, 2016, senate bill 11 (S.B. 11) was put into effect, which allows for the carrying of concealed handguns on Texas public institution campuses by license to carry a handgun (LTC) holders (Campus Carry UTSA). There has been lots of controversy over this new law, especially since there were 23 shootings on college campuses in 2015 alone. In this essay, I plan to explain the stipulations of this new law and why it is controversial.
I am against concealed carry laws that allow peaple to carry guns not visible to others. For example The Trayvone Martin case which happened in 2012.George Zimmerman would never have shot and killed trayvon martin if he had never had a concealed weapons permit, society as a whole would never heard of either of those gentleman is my opinion if the concealed weapons permit issuing peaple, government had a better screening processs.
Gun-rights supporters believe that students and faculty should be able to carry guns on campuses because they can carry them legally in other places. In the United States every state allows citizens to be able to carry a concealed weapon if they meet certain state requirements. But in twenty
