The Truth Untold…
“God made all men equal”. This is what we have been told by our ‘wise’ elders since childhood. Even the holy scriptures belonging to various religions teach the same. But history is a witness for every act and deed which contradicted this moral which we have been learning, where majority of a kind cornered the minorities and exploited them; first on the basis of gender, then color, followed by religion and then by nationality and then by language and so forth. But this does not end here. Individuals have been oppressed even on the basis of their orientation(sexuality) and gender identity, not just in the recent times but far to longer than we can guess.

They don't want to spend years debating an issue. They want it homogenized, sanitized, and above all, simplified into terms they can understand...Governments are often criticized for moving slowly, but that deliberateness, it turns out, is their strength. They take time to think through complex problems before they act. People, however, are different. People react first from the gut and then from the head. And when such people are in power, policy becomes instinct rather than thought.
During the British raj of the 1860s, the colonizers introduced a law, now popularly known as IPC section 377. This criminalized every sensual activity that was against the ‘order of nature’ or in simple words, did not lead to reproduction. This same law still prevails in the constitution, making the lives of the rainbow people miserable, making them vulnerable to threats, hate crimes, physical abuse, extortion and a lot more. The transgender community or the ‘hijras’ are the people who are affected by this the most. Where many customs demand blessings of the third gender, many people grunt when a transgender crosses their way. This marginalized and economically backward section has faced untold tortures. Due to unemployment, many of them sell themselves to earn their bread whereas the rest beg on the
Women have been downgraded and mistreated because of their gender. From birth, Women and Men grew up with very different rules to follow. Men were raised to be the head of the house and do work for a living. Growing up as little girls, women were taught to raise their kids and make food for their families. “Strong family structures were necessary because the family was the basis for all other institutions. The government, church, and community all worked through the nuclear family unit.”(“Gender and
Why do people struggle to accept those who are different from themselves? As one of many age old questions, examples of discrimination have been traced throughout history for ages. There are many categories of discrimination and inequality, including those aimed at people due to their race, sexual orientation, and gender. Gender inequality in specific has gone through a vast amount of changes, especially as women eventually began to speak out against the rules and laws that bound them. They protested against their lack of rights, the notion of being entirely dependent on their fathers and husbands, and the idea that they were even to be viewed as less than human by men. Because of this, it is almost impossible to track back the root of gender equality to one instance in history, as across the world before countries were even connected through exploration, women were thought of the inferior gender. Therefore, this essay is meant to show that, while we are making progress, there is still a lot to be done before women, men, and every other gender is accepted as equal.
In 1848 women around the world came together to form what we call a women’s revolution. Women decided to step and say how much they know they deserve the same rights as men. We are all equal, no matter what our gender is. We are all born with rights that aren’t able to be taken away and those come with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If the government sees someone being untreated by these rights, they are meant to do something about it. They are meant to annihilate the persons causing the unjust treatment. But instead they have not. We have this mistake of redoing past history and this is just the same. It shouldn’t be okay for a man to own a woman in any way, or affect what she does and how she does it. He, referring to the male, has made her have no voice. She’s voiceless in front of the man and not just her husband, but any male. You’ve taken away women’s rights to give them to less intelligent and more ignorant men? That does not make sense, when the woman can be just as smart, if not smarter. She has no representation. If married, which is supposed to be a glorious thing, she is in the eyes of the law non-existent and in the eyes of marriage her husband is her master instead of a husband. Him being the master justifies him to take away her rights and it is okay. She can in the eyes of her husband commit crime and its okay, she cannot own property, she cannot make as much money as the man can if any at all.
When the Founding Fathers brashly declared that all men are created equal in the United States Declaration of Independence, they conveniently forgot to include the word “women” in that statement. In my own pursuit of happiness I have been oppressed on a myriad of occasions due to my gender. As a female in the United States Army, I have been told by my male counterparts that I should be in the kitchen rather than in the field. I have been denied access to branches in the military that are said to be unfit for females to serve in, and I have watched as male soldiers rank up both faster and higher than female soldiers. Being a woman in today’s society means unequal pay, sexism, and overall general oppression.
The matter of equality has always been a hot topic in every avenue of news, in every new stand and now on every web browser. Some of the earliest stands for equality were rioting in the streets of London for women’s suffrage, and human, rights. Even the pilgrims had to stiff the upper lip and break away to the New World for religious freedom. No matter the time, equality for one, always means oppression for another, until the underdog stands and fights.
The inability to own property, the denial of the right to vote, and the restriction prohibiting women from military combat roles, are among just a few of the laws that discriminated women based on gender and have since then been overturned. (NWHP, Timeline) Today, most view discrimination towards women as morally wrong, yet 75% believe it remains a recurring problem (PHYS, Survey). Discrimination happens all the time through stereotypes and due to the nature of society, most tend to subconsciously support them on some level. These include stereotypes as simple as judging someone on their appearance, or believing one is more likely to be superior at something such as a sport or school subject than someone else.
Problems that women face today deal with so much more than just women’s rights, they also face abortion issues, economic justice, violence against women, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, and Constitutional equality. Women not having equal rights as men is not a new issue in our society. The current condoning of women reaches all the way back to the Old Testament as well as to Ancient Greece and extending through the fifteenth century. Documents of all the ancient cultures, like Greek, Roman, Mosaic, Hebrew, Celtic, Germanic, Assyrian, Christian, and Babylonian, all depict women being treated or regarded as of lesser importance than men.
A. Thesis. With their ideology and their demand for equal rights and personal freedoms, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and queer (LGBTQ) community has played a major part in the rise of identity politics in modern American politics.
Over the year the United States and the world was and still is violating a person’s human rights. For century’s women, African Americans, gays, and lesbians were the grunt of such unfair treatment. Men thought a women place was in the home, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the kids. Whites thought that black people did not deserve any rights because of their skin color. People where against gays and lesbians because of their sexual preference. In some countries women are not allowed to work. In India a great part of the reason they don 't work seems to lie in the constancy of India 's conventional sexual orientation standards, which try to guarantee virtue of ladies by shielding them from men other than their spouses and limit
“We cannot succeed when half of us are held back.” Malala Yousafzai said. This can be looked at in many different ways. Two of which are either stop holding women back, or stop holding men back. Why can it not be seen as stop holding some men and some women back, since both genders get discriminated against. In the TedTalks video “Why gender equality is good for everyone --- including men” told by Michael Kimmel, he talks about how most men think that the gender inequality is not something they should be worried about unless it involves “their” jobs. In the TedTalks video “What my religion really says about women” told by Alaa Murabit, she explains that the Islamic religion does not believe that women are equal even if God created us equal.
All around the world people are being discriminated; some are discriminated because of their race, while others are because of their gender, such as women. In today world, it is no different than it was 10,000 years ago. Women are still sold into prostitution, forced to marry someone they don’t love, have no right for abortion or birth control, have little or no access to education, and have to fully rely on men. This is not fair at all, women should have right’s, they didn’t before here in the United States, but now they do (even though it still exists here). If women can have right’s here in the United States they should be able to else ware. In all discrimination against women is unfair, and unjust, because here in the U.S it is
The task of this is essay is not so much to find the bona fide implications of the word “equality”, but rather to clarify its meaning towards individuals. It will seek to analyse how oppression and discrimination are related to inequality and will gradually develop into exploring how an individual’s sexual orientation can lead to social exclusion. Towards the end, the essay will
Throughout history, countless acts of gender inequality can be identified; the causes of these discriminating accounts can be traced back to different causes. The general morality of the inequity relies on a belief that men are superior to women; because of this idea, women have spent generations suffering under their counterparts. Also, a common expectation is that men tend to be more assertive and absolute because of their biological hormones or instinctive intellect. Another huge origin is sexual discrimination; even in the world today, many women are viewed by men as just sex objects rather than a real human being with
‘Hijra’ is a term for a particular form of transgendered person, a “physiological male who adopts a feminine gender identity, women’s clothing and other feminine gender roles.” In India the hijra community is marginalized geographically, economically and socio-politically; hijras find it difficult to get employment,
The oppression of women is based on false assumption and preconceived notions by the male domination world, has been obvious and responsible for paving the way for serious gender issues to emerge. Due to the narrow realms of activity in society, deprived from essential human rights, restricted educations scope, open to unhealthy physical and mental abuse, this society has not given women the opportunity to rise to their full potential. The impact of gender discrimination has not only affected the future of the women today but it has resulted in the slow progress of human mind in general.
