Social media is described as a way for people to use it for sharing advice and the latest information, ideas, careers, and interest. There are many different social media platforms that we all use like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram. They have their advantages and disadvantages based on how the way many people will use it for and how they help. Almost everyone doesn’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing to have social media, but it is a useful thing to use some time during our day. But we use it for the events that occurs to us and when we want to speak up.
A lot of people were apart of rallies and protests, but majority of people took their support and shared stories on different platforms, especially Twitter. This is Online Activism. Online Activism is when there is a faster and more effective way for people to communicate about social events and movements that is happening in our countries, states, cities, towns and communities. At the time of 2015 there was a lot of sad and emotional events that happened in so many places in the world but we only heard about it in social media. When the deaths of Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray, Laquan McDonald and the police brutality that occurred, people began the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter and became a social calling card for social justice and racial equality activists. In the summer of 2015 came people celebrated on Twitter with the #LoveWins because of the legalizing of the same sex marriages and on
Nowadays, social media is practically a staple in everyone’s lives. While some use it solely to stay in touch with friends or family, others wouldn’t even know the latest of current events if they didn’t have their phone notifying them that their friends are talking about it. The Internet and social media have bred a new generation of socially-aware people which has given them a platform to learn and share on. Because this generation’s growth is largely-based online and through technology, it has formed a new brand of social activism. While some feel social media has made it too easy to claim a movement or position, others believe that it is what we need to spread a message
On a day to day basis African-American individuals are diminished on account of prejudicial biases. Therefore, the movement “Black Lives Matter” has been constructed. It is a network of people working together to rebuild the black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter became a hashtag in the summer of 2013, when Alicia Garza posted a Facebook status called “a love letter to black people.” This status was posted as an assertion for a distressed community over George Zimmerman’s exculpation

On an individual basis, social media allows friends and family both near and far to communicate with one another. Also, businesses are flourishing through the use of social media. Advertising has never been easier. Horn (2013) states, “Our profession, unlike any time before, is demanding we become social media (…) experts” (1). Horn (2013) also states, “More than half of reporters (55 percent) use Twitter and Facebook to source stories” (1). Social media has greatly benefited business life and personal life.

The Civil Rights movement in the U.S. during the 1950’s and 60’s showed how effective activism is on political issues. Under the leadership of major civil figures, most notably Dr. Martin Luther King, the organized and peaceful movement brought about major change to the civil rights of African Americans and other minorities. Moreover, this movement made historical strides in changing U.S. policy, and did so without the use of social media. Today, social media activism is merely a means to an end. Social media can share a vast amount of information, and raise awareness on a broad spectrum of issues. However, the ability to make major changes on government policy, as proven by many occurrences in history, requires high-risk activism under an organized hierarchy. I argue that social media is not an effective tool for political actions because it lacks the necessary traits to make an effective impact.

The movement spread through social media and protests were held all over the nation. “ We’ve connected people across the country working to end the various forms of injustice impacting our people.
