For my current events, essay I chose Pollution, I found my article on the National Geographic website. I feel like some different forms of pollution is not taken as seriously as other forms are. Also, the effects of pollution are caused from many different activities that humans take part in. For example, driving cars, and or anything that produces carbon dioxide goes into our air causing damage to our atmosphere. Volcanic eruptions can spew massive amounts of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, sometimes causing cooling that lasts for years’ (Pollution. Para. 4). Areas that pollution effects are Earth’s Atmosphere, Global Warming and the Ozone Layer.
The author of my article is Peter Essick. He is a photographer, drone pilot, speaker, and teacher. Peter Essick has a Bachelor’s Degree in business, and a photojournalism Masters. He was named one of the most influential nature photographer in the world by Outdoor Photographer Magazine. He specializes in environmental themes documenting how humans impact the Earths landscape and environment. He has produced more than 30 stories for National Geographic Magazine on many different environmental problems.
In the article Pollution written by Peter Essick he provides great facts and statements to help support proof of what is happening to our Earth. The pros of this article is the simplified details that he gives on how pollution is made, and how it effects the world. It is easy to understand what he is trying to inform us about. As I read this article I got a visual picture of what he is describing. The cons of this article would be that he didn’t dig deeper in to Pollution. He could have found more facts and claims of how it is effecting the Earth and or add the effects on people’s lives. He kept it too simple. He could have broadened his research. Do I think Peter Essick is a reliable source? Yes, just because I think his article could have been more in depth does not mean what he wrote was not creatable. He has traveled to all seven continents, and written more than 30 articles for National Geographic. That alone is highly impressive and shows that he really cares about what he writes about.
There are different types of Pollution, invisible and visible.
The biosphere consists of a compound infusion of gases; the main components are oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. The concentration of these gases have been changing for many years. For the most part, this is influenced by human activity. In a persistent effort to improve the quality and longevity of life, humans (particularly in industrialized societies) have tendencies to negatively impact the environment, and at the same time, we strive to replenish what we have nearly depleted to balance the scale.
Saukko really opened my eyes to the reality of what is happening on earth. I’ve always heard many people speak about the environment and how it is deteriorating, but I have never seen exactly why. This essay gave me great insight to the reality of it.
Pollution has always been an issue within our society. Derrick Jenson and Stephanie McMillan as well as Michael Pollan have all written articles about the issues in our environment and the effects of pollution. We are causing an increasing amount of pollution as time goes on. Virtually everything we do causes some form of damage to the environment and it seems that regardless of how much we want to fix this issue we are making no progress towards a solution. Based on their articles “As The World Burns” and Pollans article “Why Bother” these authors have similar views and yet contrast on many points.
First, Parham 's argument about Earth 's environment shows effective uses of ethos, leading to a compelling overall argument. Parham first uses ethos when in an interview with Tim Vendlinski in which he discusses the last detrimental ecological disaster. Vendlinski mentions in “There are Multiple Threats to the Earth’s Environment” article that “[humans] have lost more plants and animals today than when the dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago” (Parham). Overall, Parham’s use of ethos in this example is strong and thus further serves to strengthen the argument. First, Parham uses ethos here to include another individual who is both supportive of the argument and a believable authority. Parham also uses ethos here to support his claim with credible facts and background. Additionally, according to the San Francisco Estuary Institute’s article “Tim Vendlinski,” Vendlinski can be considered a trusted authority because he “serv[ed] as EPA’s Bay Delta Program Manager; and from 1989-1995, work[ed] under the auspices of the San Francisco Estuary Project” (“Tim Vendlinski”). Also, Vendlinski shows bias
Pollution has become a heated issue in recent years. The destruction of the environment along with serious health problems are the eventual effects. The extensive use and availability of automobiles, tremendous amounts of production in the booming economy and the constant increase in demand for energy, can be held responsible.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency or EPA was initially proposed in 1970 by then President Richard Nixon. The agency was created to build on other environmental regulations enacted by the federal government and to consolidate those efforts to be managed by one government agency. It was also a reaction to the public’s growing concern over pollution and other environmental issues. Chemical waste was commonly released into bodies of water creating unsafe drinking water and rivers catching fire. Industrial air pollution, such as acid rain and smog, was also affecting manufacturing cities with coal-powered plants. There was little serious regulation on pollution until major environment laws started being passed by Congress in the early sixties.
The author's credentials and tone provide additional support to prove his trustworthiness. McWilliams clearly states his opinion on the issue and as a person who specializes in environmental history it's expected that his opinions are integrated in this essay. McWilliams' tone throughout his article seems to prove he is confident with his beliefs. Based on his knowledge, he brings up points and information that supports his reason and claim. However as an opinionated essay that is meant to persuade, one can't necessarily take his word for the information and statistics. Therefore proving McWilliams' words
Elizabeth Kolbert wrote the 2015 Pulitzer prize-winning book in the creative nonfiction genre, The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History. Ms. Kolbert’s book used the resources she has accumulated through years working in journalism to produce a well researched book about the science of the environmental change we are currently experiencing. I want this on my reading list because it serves as an inspiration. The book I want to write is less backed up by personal hands on research but more a collection of persuasive essay’s guiding readers to wiser, more conscious behavior choices. Nonetheless her writing is tight, journalistic and persuasive without
Pollution is, without doubt, a serious global issue that needs attention and resolutions. As human technologies improve, water, land, air, noise, and light pollutions are all inevitable. Five and a half million deaths each year is caused by air pollution. More than a million sea birds and mammals are killed each year by water pollution. Hundreds of dolphins and whales are killed each year by noise . These shocking facts all shows the significance of enforcing laws to ensure all people are taking care of our environment by decreasing the amount of pollution.
water, air, etc., dirty and not safe or suitable to use. Pollution as we know it, can be caused by
Your day has been great so far. You went on vacation, you found a dollar bill on the floor, you ate your favorite dish, nothing can be better than this. As soon as you walk on the boardwalk you are hoping to see big waves and fish in the sea, instead, you see dead fish and some animals floating in the water next to old car tires, trash, and fertilizer. Now you feel terrible and want to go home. Pollution is devastating. The reason why I researched this topic is that I do not want my family nor my planet to get sick. Pollution can be stopped very easily, it’s just that people “don’t know” how to stop or they just don’t care, which is a serious problem. I want people to see that pollution is mainly caused by humans, and also for them to see that it is a horrible thing that is happening. Some kids litter because they see their parents and their whole family doing it. When I was researching this topic, I noticed that I needed to find out more information, so I asked questions to myself. When did pollution get so bad? How many animals have gone extinct because of pollution? How many people die each year because of pollution? How much does everyone on the planet pollute each year? What is the best way to stop pollution? Can just one person make a difference? After a lot of research, I found out lots of ways that we can stop pollution, so it is possible to end it. Or at least improve the air.
Pollution has become a prevalent issue worldwide and has begun to affect the air used to breathe, the soil used to grow food, and the water used to drink. All of these effects result in commonly occurring destruction of health and wildlife that one may have seen on the news or heard from peers. In order to live, one needs food, water, clothing, and shelter. If the water and food that society consumes gets contaminated, a major component of life has been eradicated, which can only have negative consequences. If more people are educated as to what effects the environment, the world has a chance to counteract the effects of pollution. The main causes of pollution are the burning of fossil fuels such as with car exhausts, littering as a result of societal norms and laziness, and factory waste as a result of lax waste regulation, and can result in mass destruction of the environment and catastrophic effects on the everyday lives of contemporary people.
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. It is a major problem in America and as well as the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but damages us also. It has cause many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. It is all among us but we continue to live in our own filth. What is the reason behind this flawed logic? In this paper I will examine the problems and solutions for this issue.
Air Pollution is the most dangerous forms of pollution. It occurs due to many of reasons, excessive burning of fuel, cooking, driving and other types of activities that are similar. They release A huge amount of chemical substances in the air everyday; these pollute the air. Also smoke from chimneys, factories, vehicles or burning basically occurs due to coal burning. Air pollution is breaking down our ozone layer. There is different types of pollution but environmental pollution has been around for centuries and it is affecting the environment. People should care about this topic because pollution is a serious problem and it causes many deaths and illnesses.
Pollution has become a major issue over the years because it contaminates the Earth’s environment and affects human health. While some environmental pollution is a result of natural causes such as volcanic eruptions, most is caused by human activities. The increase of various types of pollution has made cancer pollutant more prevalent among the people, raising the risk of getting cancer. After being exposed to theses pollutants, the effects may be immediate or delayed. Some of the delayed effects, due to the exposure, can go unnoticed for many years. Another major issue that pollution creates is the tremendous cost for preventing and cleaning it up. However, we can not regulate the pollutants to the extent where there are no more possible
