Poor Gun Control Laws; Costing Thousands Annually
85% of Americans say that they favor making background checks for buying guns stricter. 88% of Democrats and 79% of Republicans support this cause (Dent). Despite this fact the background checks are still debated by the government, while everyday more people are getting their hands on dangerous weapons. Gun control laws need to be stricter to prevent mass shootings and other violent crimes with high powered guns.
First and foremost, poor gun control laws are a main reason for gun violence in America. The process of obtaining a gun needs to be stricter. President Barack Obama has pushed for the past eight years to get stricter gun laws (Hoover). Since 2001 almost 60% of Americans say gun control laws should be stricter (Alters). One would think that if more than half of the US and the President wanted to change gun laws, that the problem would be rectified. All that happens is more gun sales to people who have intentions of harming people. As a ramification of a disagreement between the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, more than 2,000 guns were purchased in the past 15 years by people the FBI said are dangerous and should not be able to own a firearm (Hoover). These guns were sold because of a dispute of the two organizations that are supposed to prevent the sales to dangerous people. These two organizations have differentiated views on the gun control laws and if the laws were stricter and more defined these dangerous people would not get there hands on guns. “Not all gun sellers are required to conduct background checks.
