Introduction:
Discrimination is a huge and delicate topic in the world today, but first, discrimination needs to be explained. There are many psychological factors that influence the way people think. The way individuals think causes the thoughts of discrimination; therefore, an individual’s psychological makeup will determine their view of others. Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex (Social Psychology—Racism).
In order to truly understand discrimination, one must know where and how it starts. Discrimination starts at a young age. Children are the future, and everything the see and learn in their upbringing influences them forever. The ways of discrimination that they learn can transfer into many condescending and secretive ways or can transpire into a bold topic.
Discriminating against an individual or a specific group of individuals can truly cause those individuals to have psychological problems, which is why this issue is so wide spread and is considered a worldwide issue. If the human race finds a way to get rid of discrimination all together the world would be a better place. Judgments should be made based on known facts rather than on false information. It is for this reason that has led to intriguing question of why individuals think in a discriminatory manner, and act the way they do, and how humans as a race can fix the problem.

Discrimination and prejudice are widely known in United States history. In the 1960's the civil rights movement demanded legislation and passed laws, which banned discrimination. Five decades later, it still continues in our society. Discrimination and prejudice occur when a group of people feel they are superior to another, and can be based on a person's color, race, national origin, religion, sex and gay couples.
Discrimination is when someone has a bias opinion on a specific crowd of people due to their race, sex, religion, or order of rank. This basically goes hand in hand with the phrase judging a book by its cover meaning the person with the negative opinion will not give the other individual a fair chance for the reason being they are being stereotypical and not thinking of the other person’s talent, or character. A modern day example of discrimination would be if a male employer were to compensate a female employee a lower pay due to her gender. At some time in everyone’s life due to today society, we have all been victimized by discrimination. Whether it may be a dirty look from a random person, or the way you dress, talk, and even look.
Discrimination takes place in a variety of settings, for example, within educational establishments, where learners may not be given support and encouragement if it's assumed that their disability or advancing years affects their ability to learn. The fundamental root of discrimination is prejudice. Prejudice starts with cognition and our thoughts towards another group which often leads to a generalization or stereotyping (Myers, 2014, pg.572). Stereotyping leads us to emotions directed towards a particular group or person; including fear, hatred, and hostility, fundamentally this is negative prejudice (Myers, 2014, pg.572). Myers (2014) states that if we believe our thoughts to be true, our emotions will lead to the actual act of discrimination. Taking action on prejudice is discrimination; it is the behaviours or actions directed towards a specific distinction of a group (Myers, 2014, ph.572). We do know that discrimination can take many forms, some acceptable and others purely inexcusable.
Discrimination is the act of someone treating another unfairly, unequal, or less favorably because of their race, gender, religion, disability, or sexual orientation. Discrimination affects people and can occur in many places. Discrimination happened during the civil war and made it hard to live through that time.
Dating back to several hundreds of years ago, people have always been discriminated against. Stereotyping is also involved in discriminating against people. Stereotyping is what happens when we simplify out prejudgements about a certain groups of people and we subsequently see all member of that group as having certain negative traits. According to Fitzduff, 1988, “prejudices and stereotyping are mainly concerned with feelings and attitudes. Feelings are nurtured through our childhood, community and society and are often by the time we reach adulthood”.
Discrimination is treating someone differently, often unfairly, because he/she is a part of a specific group, class or category of people. For instance, a girl named Wu Qing in China was discriminated against and could not find a job because how her body was a bit chubby and the scars in her face from an accident in her early childhood. Even though she was kind and used to be straight-A student, she had no friends. Now, she is looking for selling her kidney in order to pay the plastic surgery fee. Unfortunately due to our past history, discrimination had been among us from since decades. Discrimination and prejudice would probably be among us until the end of the world. Prejudice and discrimination is an action that treats people unfairly because of their membership in a particular social group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs to rather on that individual. It is an unfair treatment to a person, racial group, and minority. It is an action based on prejudice.
When terms such as prejudice and discrimination are used, many often think of race and ethnicity. Many also believe that prejudice and discrimination are things of the past. Stereotypes are generalizations of groups of people. Stereotypes are not based on the differences between people within those groups, but are rather judgements made towards all members.
As discussed, In the scientific field, it is understood that there are major differences between prejudice and discrimination, although seemingly similar due to their relation. However, prejudice pertains strictly to the attitude that one may develop, (Sartore-Baldwin 2013, Duckworth 2015, Mifflin Company 2002) and discrimination is defined based on actual negative actions aimed towards individuals. Prejudices may be established due to the dislike of someone 's sex, gender identity race, age, or even sexual preferences. Whether you believe it or not, racial discrimination is not a controversial matter of the past and has a profound impact on society. Nowadays we still inherit unconsciously misconceptions and prejudices that happen to be unnoticed in our day by day. Consequently, in order to raise awareness upon the connotation of this matter, we must educate people on behalf of assertiveness and comprehension. Therefore, it is remarkably important to acknowledge: the negative impact of racial discrimination on the individual and society, the necessity of derogating misconceptions and the values of cultural diversity.
