Currently, I am studying the psychosocial burden of food allergies on humans. This burden can cause severe stress and anxiety. Before I started that topic, I needed to learn about the main problem food allergies. Essentially, An allergy is an overemphasized reaction by the immune system in response to exposure to certain foreign substances. It is exaggerated because these exotic substances are usually seen by the body as harmless and no response occurs in nonallergic people. In allergic individuals, the body recognizes the foreign substance and the immune system generates a response.

Then, the IgE molecules are differentiated into extremely specific sub-categories. Then, the IgE’s will attach to the allergen and create an antigen-antibody complex. Then, the complex will bind to a mast cell, which provokes the mast cell to release certain chemicals such as histamine and serotonin. This causes allergic symptoms, but I will get into that section later in the paper. An allergic response might lead to anaphylactic shock, a life threatening reaction that will happen in seconds after the initial intake of the allergen.

What happens during anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction. It will most likely occur within seconds or minutes of exposure to the allergen. Anaphylaxis needs an immediate trip to the ER and an injection of epinephrine. If anaphylaxis is not treated immediately, the victim will most likely die. Anaphylaxis is fatal and causes around 100-150 deaths a year. Fatalities can easily be prevented if anaphylaxis is treated at first sight. Anaphylaxis is an extreme and sever allergic reaction that can be caused by insects bites, foods, latex and medication. This allergic reaction fiffers from one person tp the other. In some people, it can only affect one part of the body whereas in others, it affect more than one part of the body. The effects are usually within a few minutes of exposure to the substance that causes the allergic reaction. In other instances it can take hours before the effects are seen. This allergic reaction calls for immediate medical treatment because it can be fatal id it is not treated properly.
Allergy is a Medical condition that causes someone to become sick after eating, touching, or breathing something that is harmless to most people(1).The describe allergic disease as "the epidemic of the 21st century". The prevalence has doubled over the last 20 years (2). Allergy has many types such as food allergies, antibiotics allergies, pollen allergies, egg allergies, and peanut allergies. As of 2008, approximately 25% of people in the developed world suffer from allergic disorders (Galli, Tsai, Piliponsky, 2008). These disorders can be mild, but they can also be severe. Hay fever, asthma, eczema, and anaphylaxis are a few examples of what can be categorized as allergic disorders. The morbidity rates among school aged children in the industrialized world is even higher than in the general population with 40-50% of children susceptible to one or more type of allergy (Pawankar et al., 2011). The pervasiveness of allergies worldwide has risen in the developed world for over 50 years. Many people take medication for their allergies but it can often take years to find a completely effective regime, if ever. For some, allergic disorders can severely disrupt everyday life. With so many suffering from allergies it is no surprise that this area of health has been thoroughly studied. Interestingly enough though, while we do know what happens in the human body during an allergy attack there is still debate as to why we as humans evolved allergic disorders in the first place.
With just a very quick exposure to an allergen, anaphylaxis can occur immediately. Allergens can be anything from dust, food products such as peanuts, shellfish, nuts, and even insects and sting like bees and wasp stings. There are approximately 7 billion people living on planet Earth, 30% of this population has an allergy, and 250 million people suffer from food allergies specifically. Patrizia Marina, author of “Allergy: The Toxic Burden,” adds to this discovery by mentioning how this percentage is steadily increasing by 5% each year. Allergies are overlooked by the majority of the population. An allergy is more complex and severe than most people would assume. However, it is not the allergy we should be afraid of, it is the reaction the allergies can lead to. Allergic reactions can range from minor to deadly. Ever felt powerless at the entrance of a grocery store when you realize you don't know what you can eat. After several bouts of "food Russian Roulette" you or a family member have been diagnosed with food allergies. You find food you previously purchased on a regular basis for years is now making you or your family member ill and you feel worse when it is your child. You are now becoming an avid somewhat obsessive label reader. Processed and canned foods are contaminated with allergens. The fruit and vegetables are laced with soy wax and so now the conundrum.

The article is started by explaining what a food allergy is and the reactions that could happen when a person has an allergic reaction. Then it elaborates on school-aged children with food allergies and how they are bullied for having an allergy within school. I think this source will be beneficial to my paper by providing the basic information about children who are bullied due to their food allergy. It will help to answer my research question by showing how children are negatively impacted socially from their food allergy. The article showed me a new depth of bullying that could happen to children who are just trying to prevent allergic reactions.

Anaphylactic shock usually results after an allergen has been triggered. It occurs when there is inadequate blood flow to critical organs of the body. A person might not even show signs ! According to a 10 year study more than half of all patients showed no signs.
Allergy by definition is a damaging immune response by the body to a substance, to which it has become excessively sensitive. I have chosen to study allergies because there a lot of people I know that are allergic to something, and some of those people are related to me.
Many people deal with some type of allergy in their lifetime. Allergies are immune responses to a substance that either enter or encounters the body. I am affected by the two most common allergies’, food and pollen. I have always been allergic to pollen, but I didn’t get peanut allergies until I was older.
