Our world is constantly changing to where some old gender values are shifted for a new. Examples of those values might be women’s rights, rights for homosexuals and others that are part of the LGBTQ+ community, and other minorities in the world today. In four separate projects, our class analysed data collected by the entire class about 4 different aspects of gender roles and different races in our society. One fact that caught my attention came from the project asking on single question. The results of the question showed that people in our society today are possible more accepting of a homosexual being a doctor than a women. (Postel & Group, The Quandary) I plan to analyze the results of the question as well as other facts from the other …show more content…
That question was, “A father and son are in a horrible car crash that kills the dad. The son is rushed to the hospital; just as he’s about to go under the knife, the surgeon says, “I can’t operate- that boy is my son!” How is this possible?” The results of this showed that 10 percent of the class believed the boy was adopted and that one of the real parents or adopted parents were the doctor. Another 10 percent believed that it was a stepfather who was the doctor. Only 20 percent of people said that the doctor was the Mother. This is against the 40 percent of people believing that the boy’s parents were in a gay relationship. The other 20 percent said some other answer. (Postel & Group, The Quandary) This was a surprise to me. I believed that women were going to at least be 40 - 50 percent of the results. I did not think that homosexuality was going to out weight women by double. It surprised me, because it is not like people do not see female doctors everywhere. Even on television or in movies. There is a plentiful amount of female doctors. The same group also put a chart on their handout that displayed the results of asking different generations if same-sex sexual relations are always wrong. As time went on, the older generations typically believed that it was wrong. However as time went on and new generations were born, people started to believe otherwise. (Postel & Group, The Quandary) Some more information that shocked me were the statistics about workers in the medical
In Mantsios article “Class in America” he states that Americans hold beliefs that blind them to social classes, citizens in America have four myths they use to ensure talk about the classes never take place. America has the largest gap between rich and poor in the world, and the lower class has no means to an end they can’t afford health care or quality education. The upper class avoids talk about social class the most; wealthy people don’t want to admit that they are better off than others. While the lower class sees how much better off others are than them, but they still don’t like to label themselves. I agree with Mantsios that most Americans avoid talk about classes although I am not one of them. Also I
In Class Matters, Bill Keller examines the meaning of the word class and how it plays on the life of the US citizens.According to Class Matters, a class is represented as four cards, one from each suit: education, income, occupation, and wealth. Based on your cards you are put into a class. Most people end up with the same cards as their parents. Keller explains how a class can be predetermined by a person’s upbringing or how they were raised. In this book, Bill Keller suggests that it is quite difficult to move into other social classes than the one we were born in, or a class we have been associated with for a long time. Based on the reading of this book along with other resources, moving into other social classes is exceptionally
The principal aspect of our nowadays community consists of its division into groups. Social division is interconnected with the cases of inequalities and their lasting impact on the lives of those who undergo it. Nowadays the entertainment media pays significant attention to the issue of social stratification which presupposes virtue to be attached to the well-off middle and upper classes. Meanwhile, in accord with Michael Parenti's argument in "Class and Virtue," the working class is treated not only as ignorant and ill-mannered but also as less desirable and less moral than other class. In this essay, this issue will be examined on the basis of the film Crash which supports the message of Michael Parenti. The film shows the life of two different groups of people, where the black working class is always suffering from the racial segregation and is treated as a third-class people.
Using material from Item A and elsewhere, assess the claim that gender differences in educational achievement are primarily the 'result of changes in society'
In addition, there are concerns about how competitors and the U.S. Association of Seafood Processors and
I conducted a survey, asking 20 females and 20 males their favorite food group for my AP Statistics project. I surveyed on Wednesday, September 27 and on Thursday, September 28 at Marshall High School. They chose from protein, grain, vegetables, fruit, and dairy. From the data, I found that 10 males and 2 females liked protein best, 3 males and 2 females liked grains best, 1 male and 1 female liked vegetables best, 3 males and 13 females liked fruit best, and 3 males and 2 females liked dairy best. Half of the males liked protein best, while most females liked fruits best. The least amount of both males and females liked vegetables. From this data, we can see that males like protein more than females do, and females like fruit more than males
The research that I chose to elaborate my topic on is the Roe v. Wade court case which is about abortion. The case history is about a woman who was single and pregnant; she decided to bring a stimulating challenge suit to the constitution of Texas laws. The laws that Texas made were given to prohibit mothers from aborting children because it was a crime. They could not do it without medical advice for the reason that it was to save the life of the unborn child. As I begin to go into detail about the court case. First Dr. Hallford, a medical doctor who faced criminal prosecution for violating the state abortion law. Second, you have the Does. They are a married couple with no children who were against Jane Roe and her decisions. Lastly, you have District Attorney Wade. Roe and Hallford had a portion of controversies and declaratory that was warranted. The court ruled a decision relief that was not warranted and the Does criticism was not justiciable. This is a brief synopsis of what the court case will expand on later on in the research paper. I will be utilizing reviews to test what male and female dispositions were towards fetus removal and how they feel about it. The study will extremely differ and I will be getting a broad gender preference perspective of the subject that I decided to do the review on. It will all tie once again into the Roe v. Wade court case. As you are perusing my examination paper; the researcher made an investigation on Chowan University
Ebony, a university student, finds herself in two classes, each with their own unique atmosphere. Interpersonal Communication comes first and is taught by Professor Gardner, who has been teaching for 20 years. Organizational Communication is her second class, taught by Professor Morgan, who is younger than Professor Gardner. Each professor has a different style of teaching and opinion on how students learn most efficiently. Professor Gardner sets out his expectations, rules of conduct, and strict no-technology policy on the first day of class; he values structure and consistency for his students. Professor Morgan does not present rules for her class; she does not mind if students come in late or leave early, and appreciates the use of technology for the purpose of adapting the learning environment for each student. Professor Morgan values freedom and self-responsibility for her students. Ebony loves Interpersonal Communication, and notices that the students, when provided with structure, tend to thrive, communicate freely, and connect with other students right away. There is a lot of laughter involved, and most everyone knows each other’s names. In Organizational Communication, however, Ebony feels lost and out of touch with the path of the class. She finds that the spontaneity of Professor Morgan is more confusing than helpful; Ebony senses the disconnect between students, as most of them do not know each other’s names. Professor
Has there been a time that you have done something that took a lot of nerves? One time that I did something that took a lot of nerves was last year. In history class that day, our class was run by one student from our class. The leader that was chosen by the class really wasn’t chosen by the class. Traolach said that he was the leader so he took power; the class went by his rules.
I identify as a heterosexual woman, my pronouns are she and her, I grew up with a clear understanding of my sexuality, and what I mean by that is I knew I was sexually attracted to men. After answering the heterosexual questionnaire, I realized how insulting it all is to be questioned about something extremely personal, honestly no one else’s business, as well as how insulting it all can be, for example, “What do you think caused your heterosexuality?” and “Is it possible your heterosexuality is just a phase you may grow out of?” (1972, Rochlin) I mean seriously? While I did feel some questions were just ridiculous, I did find some of the questions difficult to answer. I constantly think back to the reading from like the beginning of class
The issue of class is a predominant topic in the world’s social discourse because in every society, there must be the rich and the poor. It is estimated that in this country, there are 38 million people living in absolute poverty. This has created a very huge disparity in the manner in which people live in the society; their lifestyles and general well being. To compound the situation further, the general norm regarding class is that the rich often get richer as days go by while the poor consistently become poorer (Mathews 13). Bell Hooks in her book “Where we stand: Class Matters,” sought to give an insight on the general concept of class as it is today. In this book, the author propagates three main ideas. To start with, Bell argues that the question of class cuts across all other dimensions of life including gender, race, religion and sexuality. Secondly, she posits that religion is has been a very instrumental tool in bridging the gap between classes. Finally, Bell observes that the proclamation that we live in a classless society is flawed in every sense of the world. This paper seeks to make an incisive elucidation of the three observations that Bell makes in her book.
One of false ideal in the story is ‘Classism’. It happens as the morals that used to maintain the farm turn into controls, which then make the animals effectively split themselves into classes. This happens through Hegemony, resulting in the acceptance of these classes with ease by the animals. Hegemony, according to Antonio Gramsci “he discusses his concept of social power or domination, which he calls hegemony” (673).”Take for example the pigs: they took it upon themselves to rule and follow the teachings of Old Major. This becomes socially acceptable to the animals after some time and is even perceived as normal, even if there are no scientific basis to the pigs’ claims that they are mentally superior compared to the other animals.
Jae does not believe her family’s cultural value or ethnicity influences her gender expression and sexual orientation. “I do not think my family cultural value has to do with anything. The only thing that can effect me from my culture is the religious belief. The only time gender role will influence me is if I was an AG or a fem. I am just me, therefore my family’s cultural values has nothing to do with anything.” Jae personally did not like the question dealing with family cultural value because she did not understand what the question was attempting to suggest.
Regarding my primary research, I conduct a survey on NSU female students that from which point of view they think medium skin tone is more preferable for female students to date men. I conduct survey with a sample size of about 24 female students in NSU. My intention is to get the answer based on questionnaire that will contain variety of questions. Through this process I am actually able to get a range of useful data which will support me to answer my research question. Those data actually will help me to get a verification for my primary questions. And I will able to verify regarding skin tone.
When I first proposed this study I wanted to know why are there a greater number of girls dropping out of a higher education than boys do. I realised that this was not a path breaking question but since I did not want to dwell into a path-breaking aspect in my first internship in this sphere I thought I would be a good idea to understand the obvious and then go ahead with newer ideas. I wanted to use this internship as a platform for my future projects that will be will women and development, if it is left only to my wishes. I am genuinely interested to work in this sector. In a way my generalised question helped me understand the larger picture better and also forced me to think in manner that was a little
