The quarters for the Queen and her entourage adjoined the castle and were very spacious. One excellent feature was that all of the stairways for the ladies had a broad tread fully 16” deep with but a five-inch riser. This ensures safety for high heels and long courtly dresses. Never discount the power of a woman. The adjacent museum was filled with countless artifacts that were beautiful as well as some that were useful – the craftsmanship is unapproachable today. Western headed a consortium of dredgers that dredged in the extra acreage on a classified job at Johnston Island, 200 miles west of Honolulu. This nuclear weapons base was successfully completed on time. Soon thereafter, our dredge, “Western Eagle,” was sent to Western Australia to open a new harbor and channel that services the developing coal and iron mines some 100 miles north of the pleasant self-sufficient city of Perth. When the Western Eagle left Johnston Island, it was accompanied by a fully-loaded Landing Ship Tank (“LST”) that carried all of the floating pipeline with pontoons and endless items of repair parts for the dredge and support equipment. On the second day out of Johnston Island, the LST sank, which left the dredge stripped of all essential items to plant up the project. As this called for instant replacements dispatched to Western in Australia, a surplus 16,000-ton tanker – the “Pueblo” – ‘in class’ (certified condition for ocean operations), was purchased and refitted with traveling
Museums have long served a purpose as cultural staples. For every museum, big and small, careful consideration is used in selecting its contents. When securing new items for a museum, it is most important to consider public appeal, educational value, and cost-effectiveness.
Queen, by Audrey Flack is a very captivating piece of artwork. It was painted in 1976, originally Audrey Flack took a picture and then used it as the basis for this painting. Queen is a painting of box that is full of special mementos. It has features such as a quarter of an open orange, a rose, a pocket watch, a queen playing card, a locket of an older and a younger woman, lip balm, perfume, a chess piece, blush, and a chain necklace with the letter “F” on it. The painting almost looks like a vanity drawer or a keepsake drawer. However, realizing the fruits and flower in the painting I understood it to be a collection of the artist's memories as opposed to a drawer. Audrey Flack was demonstrating the many things that were significant to her while aging. Queen signifies the fight against time. It shows that no matter what possessions you retain it will not keep you young. No one can win the battle against time.
For the fifth time this year the Princess Anne Cavaliers faced off against the Salem Sundevils, but this time it was to see who would advance to the State Championship game. With both teams knowing each other so well the game would depend on who got hot at the right time, and which coach could make that crucial adjustment that would change the scope of the whole game.
In museums today various pieces are displayed in such a way as to show people that these pieces are what they are and to explain their original uses etc. In Paris for example, a new museum was built in 2006 called Quai Branly and it displayed a collection of Benin pieces including
The museum’s exhibits contain hundreds of thousands of artifacts and historically significant items typical of what one finds in many science and history museums. But, what I found most interesting was the Shipwreck display, which brought to life a romantic vision of the swashbuckling times of yore that I read about when I was young.
The following year, after environmental impact assessments were conducted by DOE, the list was narrowed to five potential locations (Richton Dome, Mississippi; Yucca Mountain, Nevada; Deaf Smith County, Texas; Davis Canyon, Utah; and, Hanford, Washington).5 Finally, in 1986, DOE narrowed the field to three sites: Yucca Mountain, Nevada; Deaf Smith County, Texas; and Hanford, Washington. The fact that each of these locations had a prior involvement with nuclear technology probably contributed to their selection since DOE likely concluded that any opposition to establishing a radioactive waste repository would be muted.6 The site selection process in the East was even more difficult. As Michael Kraft, Professor of Environmental Studies, points out:
Queen Latifah changed people’s perspectives on race, pride, gender, and culture. She created new things for the people to change themselves to become who they are. Queen Latifah advocates for people to live their own lives and says that women don't need a man to take care of them. Queen Latifah is a singer, songwriter, rapper, and actress. She had started rapping in high school. She was born in Newark, New Jersey. She has been considered one of hip-hop's pioneer feminists. People use poetry, song, etc to send their message to us like queen Latifah did by making song. In Pough book also talk about race and gender in public sphere in chapter one. The framework from Perry book is white supremacy, as racist/sexism iconography has been deployed to perpetuate notation of innate biological inferiority. She is 47 years old. She never got married. Her parents were divorced when she was ten.
Every nation has a particular figure who rules the country. Throughout the world, there have been a tremendous number of presidents, kings, and queens. They leave their own achievements either in the political or diplomatic area, which future generations, such as historians and the public, evaluate to determine whether the accomplishments are effective. Among all the British kings and queens, Queen Elizabeth I is regarded as the most influential queen, since she brought about a great change in her nation. Elizabeth paved the way for Britain becoming the British Empire through her resolutions of the conflicts of religion and military forces, spreading the trend of slavery and the use of English, which allowed the British Empire enjoy its governance in the world for decades.
“Six steam-powered dredges the size of floating barns gnawed at the lakeshore, as five thousand men with shovels and wheelbarrows and horse-drawn graders slowly scraped the landscape raw, many of the men wearing bowlers and suitcoats as if they just happened to be passing by and on impulse chose to pitch in.” (Larson 129).
The mariners educated the officials of the currents of the harbor and how to navigate through. Even the surviving crew members worked with community business (Ritchie & Gill, The Selendang Ayu Oil Spill: A Study of the Renewable Resource Community of Dutch Harbor/Unalaska, 2006, p.15). The community collectively donated essential items to the crew members as a token of appreciation. The crew received 50-pound bags of clothes, which was more than what they had lost of the ship (Ritchie & Gill, The Selendang Ayu Oil Spill: A Study of the Renewable Resource Community of Dutch Harbor/Unalaska, 2006,
So many people see history as something dry and lifeless but in reality it is a study that is full of life. There is no better way to see this than through the lens of archaeological artifacts. The people of the past are intrinsically a part of these objects. They were shaped by human hands; some were used in everyday life while others only meant to be appreciated as art. In any case, they show the vitality of history which can sometimes be obscured by the centuries. I want to work with a collection that deals with archaeological artifacts, and ideally I would like to work with objects of Greek or Roman origins. One day I would like the opportunity to create an exhibit where the viewer can see how the objects relate to a whole as well as their own individual characteristics. I want others to have the same sort of experience I had while walking through the Byzantine and Christian Museum; I want them to have a moment of connection to the past and see how alive history can be. I am especially interested in the courses that the Museology program offers which teach the proper methods to curate archaeological collections. The experience of working with the objects in the Burke Museum will benefit my goal of curating a
Throughout the experience, I learned the importance and care of working with an artifact along with operations within a museum. As I toured Heartland Museum, I witnessed all of the items that are stored behind the scenes because museums only keep a small percentage of the belongings on display. I also learned about the process of creating a display, which includes piecing together many details like attraction, relevance, and of course history. Museums must worry about the community’s interest in the displays. Lastly, I learned about the importance of an artifact by working with some of the items. It is important to handle artifacts with care because of the fragility of the item. After the information I learned at the museum, it was my turn to experience the public
After reading My Last Duchess and My Ex- Husband, there were more similarities than there were differences. My Last Duchess was about a jealous Duke that ended up killing his wife because he thought she was cheating with the man who painted the portrait of her that is hanging on his wall for only him to see. In My Ex- Husband, the poem is about a woman who writes about how much she hates her ex, though cannot seem to move on from his mistakes of cheating. Both of these poems demonstrate poetic devices that are very similar to each other- rhyme scheme, themes, and the structure of the poem.
Were there any inappropriate risks that should not have been taken? How can these be identified and mitigated on future shipbuilding initiatives?
In fairytales, royal women are typically regarded as delicate, sophisticated creatures, controlled by the kingdoms to which they belong. However, it is the strength within these women that is far more admirable than their outer appearance could ever be. This is why looking at royalty as perfection—a gift of beauty, wealth, and dignity—creates a widely known myth that hides the unattractive truth behind the royal life. Although you should always seek to look beyond the surface, “The Princess in the Suit of Leather” shows that upon deeper inspection you ultimately get hit with the harsh reality of conservative gender roles.
