The Ramones helped conceive punk rock by mastering a simple but effective sound - a combination of swift grooves, sing-along tunes and deadpan lyrics that achieved a sort of absurd brilliance. The sound influenced thousands of bands, and proved so durable that the Ramones stuck to it for their entire career.
The Ramones formed in 1974 after the foursome graduated or dropped out of high school in Forest Hills, New York. The original lineup featured Joey on drums, Dee Dee sharing guitar with Johnny, and Tommy as manager, but they soon settled on their recording setup. Their name and pseudonym came from Paul McCartney, who had briefly called himself Paul Ramon back when the Beatles were known as the Silver Beatles. The Ramones drifted toward
I have chosen to write about one of my favorite alternative rock band, Red Hot Chili Peppers from Los Angeles, California. My decision was based upon two things; one being I like the band, while the other was to learn if some of their music is sending the wrong message to our young people. I personally would not consider myself music sappy; never have I really been given a chance to listen to music as I grew up, to find what I like. As of today, I don’t know who sings what song nor really know what the lyric’s mean. With today’s environment young people are given a chance to be inspired by different kinds of media; thus giving them the opportunity to actually find out what the artist is meaning behind the songs. After interviewing four participation;
Yesterday, Pearl Jam were (rightfully) nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next year, in their first year of eligibility.
Before researching, I already knew a lot about the Beatles. I knew that the band was made up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They started the famous "British Invasion" of the 1960's on American pop/rock music, and they started a craze that
When I first browsed through the different topics on which we were to write essays on, I was ecstatic when I saw one about rock and roll. Once I started skimming through all the bands and artists I know and love, I knew there would be no problem writing this essay. I firmly believe that I was born in the wrong generation of music because I am a hardcore oldies junkie at heart. For this reason, the bands I have selected are as follows: The Beastie Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and The Righteous Brothers.
In the summer of 1969, a music festival known as “Woodstock” took place for three straight days in Upstate, New York with thirty-two musical acts playing, and over 400,000 people from around the world coming to join this musical and peaceful movement. Woodstock started out being a small concert, created to promote peace in the world. Now, Woodstock is still being celebrated over 40 years later. This three day music festival represented the perfect concert for the “baby boomers” during a messy political time. Woodstock significantly impacted the counterculture era of the 1960’s in a number of ways; how it began, the ideas of the concert, the sense of union and love it represented and it
Every memory of the summer of 1969 is connected to, in one way or another, the historical event, Woodstock. The festival could not have left more of an impact on the “hippie” generation anymore than it did those three days of music and peace. The generation of the time wanted nothing more than what they got out of Woodstock. Today, people still look back on the festival and think of how well it made history without the expectance of doing so. Woodstock, one of the most important cultural events of the 20th century, combined iconic musical acts with interesting social behavior.
Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Matt Sharp, and Jason Cropper formed the alternative rock group known as Weezer in 1992 in Los Angeles, California. The band went through several names before lead singer Rivers Cuomo christened the band as Weezer after his childhood nickname due to his asthma.
Stone Temple Pilots were able to turn alternative rock into stadium rock; naturally, they became the most critically despised band of their era. Accused by many critics of being nothing more than ripoff artists who pilfered from Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, the bandmates nevertheless became major stars in 1993. And the influence of those bands was apparent in their music, although Stone Temple Pilots did manage to change things around a bit. STP were more concerned with tight song structure and riffs than punk rage. Their closest antecedents were not the Sex Pistols or Hüsker Dü; instead the band resembled arena rock acts from the '70s -- they made popular hard rock that sounded good on the radio and in concert. No matter what
From time to time when I was 8, I always heard the same words pop up in my head month after month, “I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad I got sunshine, in a bag, and I’m useless, but not for long the future, is coming….” Strangely, I never commemorate hearing these words, nor knowing that my brother was the one who would listen to the band that would soon become my favorite many years later, but somewhere inside me, these memories stuck with me until now. At random times, I would be doing nothing and I could hear those same lyrics in my head. Fast forward 6 years later and I finally decided to searched up the band, somehow having knowledge of the name, “Gorillaz.” Born on March 23, 1968, Damon Albarn would go on to create on of the most successful
In 1962, they formed the Rolling Stones, naming their group after the “rolling stone” that represented a tough and independent man in blues songs like “Rollin’ Stone” and “Mannish Boy” (Charlton 107). When the group was officially formed, with all five men, they started playing rhythm and blues (R&B).
The merging of heavy metal and punk rock was bound to happen. Although attempted in 1978 by the Ramones, bands from Las Angeles became the first to successfully complete the crossover into punk metal.
The Ramones' distorted and fast-paced style was influenced by pop music that the band members grew up listening to in the 1950's and 1960's, such as the Beach Boys, The Who, The Beatles, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones; and bubblegum acts such as the 1910 Fruitgum Company and Ohio Express.
The heavy metal band Judas Priest was known for being one of the most popular and most respected heavy metal bands on the planet. Even though they have had many members, they have made a huge impact in the heavy metal genre. They were hugely influenced by two of the most popular and well known heavy metal bands of all time.
Back in the early 70’s there was an all guy group called The Ramones. They were a rock band fun fact when I brought this band up to my father he told me one of his friends was their alternate drummer. The band played together as one and made it look like they got a long but Joey and Johnny didn't talk for 22 years. The band was together for 40 years. They had a sound that was different then most bands in the 1970s. Their new sound was not the best hit in America at first, but while they were in th United kingdom they became very popular. The Ramones started the leather punk style consisting of leather jackets, ratty t-shirts along with ripped jeans and worn sneakers. The Ramones brought back a no nonsense vibe but also a fun loving rebel affect.
Another diverse style and philosophies of punk culture would be the Ramones. The Ramones, from Forest Hills, Queens, helped invent a simple but effective sound of punk rock. Their sound is influenced thousands of bands and establish their influence on genre of music. The Ramones were influence by the style of The Velvet Underground and it helps define punk rock sound. The Ramones were active from 1974-1996. Ramones style was very simple and stripped down lyrics, with the usage of four chords for a simple and catchy melody and revolutionary sounds. The group simplicity reflected in their image by no makeups, or light shows when performing. The groups did target dark subject matter like The Velvet Underground but they also brought high-energy
