Wade knelt down next to one of the tires on the car and ran his hand over it. Grinding his teeth together, he stood up and growled.

"They've been slashed. God damn it. I didn't hear anything last night, did you?"

Grace shook her head. "I woke up several times but didn't hear anything out of the ordinary."

"I've got to call this in to Dax. " Wade turned in a circle and inspected the area. "Why don't I take you out to breakfast at the cafe. I can call on the way."

"I'm not sure I have an appetite, although I do kind of want to get out of here."

"Go thow some clothes on and lets go."

Grace stared out the window, watching the scenery pass by in a blur as Wade made the phone call.

"Dax, someone came and slashed all four tires on Grace's car."

The motel down south was such a rat hole, I couldn't wait to get out of there. Does this place even have anything edible? I'm in some serious need of a latte and a crepe."

Once again, Wade cleared his throat.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Mother, this is Wade. Wade meet my mother, Helen."

Wade stood up and pulled a chair out for her before extending his hand out. Ignoring it, Helen took a napkin and made a show of brushing off the seat before sitting down.

"So, again I ask, how did you know where I was?"

"Oh, a woman has her ways. Have I taught you nothing, Grace?" Helen glanced around before raising her hand up and snapping her fingers. "Customer service is obviously not taught around here." I can understand Grace's contempt, but in the story I was thinking there was also fear.

"Mother, stop. Answer my question."

"Don't speak to me like that, Grace. You know better than that. This place is ruining your manners."
