In the movie Freedom Writers, there are several controversial topics discussed. The movie deals with the hardships that goes along with poverty in a bad neighborhood.. The director, Richard LaGravenese, did a nice job at portraying what the students go through (The Freedom Writers Diary). The teacher, Mrs. Gruwell, did everything that she could so that she could inspire them to want to learn, and live better lives than they have. These students’ lives are so much harder and more violent than most people could ever imagine. Mrs. Gruwell, a first time teacher, was in charge of teaching a group of misbehaved students, who had no motivation to learn. Most of the students in her class are involved in gangs. All of the students have lost friends due to gang violence and they never know if they will survive the day. They have to deal with poverty and homelessness. Most of them have a friend or loved one in prison. They look up to these people, because they were protecting their own. They learn at a young age that the gang comes first. They do everything they can to protect it, even die if they have to. If they die, they are heroes, and they finally get respect. This is the biggest problem that Mrs. Gruwell facs. She has to find a way to show the kids that there is more to life than what they have right now. She thinks that the way to do this is to inspire them to learn. She finally had her breakthrough when she relates the gangs that they are members of, to the Holocaust. The kids
“But even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can, within their own small ways, turn on a small light in a dark room.” The 2007 film Freedom Writers, based on the 1999 novel The Freedom Writers Diary, includes many well-known celebrities including Hilary Swank, Patrick Dempsey, and Mario and was directed by Richard LaGravensee (Dargis). The motion picture gives viewers a look into Erin Gruwell’s freshman and sophomore English classes at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Gruwell, a new teacher, is hired to teach an incredibly diverse class consisting of blacks, Asians, and Latinos, many of whom are involved or have been influenced by the gang war occurring in their area. Erin soon realizes that she is not going to be able to simply teach the children in her class, she must be creative to find a new, interesting way to get her point across and received. The film demonstrates that through patience, courage, and acceptance much can be accomplished. Freedom Writers contains an apparent theme of prejudice that still applies to the world today.

“Freedom Writers” is a powerful film that is based on a true story about a teacher named Erin Gruwell, who struggles to connect with her students to make them believe that they can succeed in life, and to show them that their lives, experiences, and knowledge is valuable, all while attempting to unify them and to overcome racial segregation and gang violence that is part of their daily lives. Gruwell focuses on introducing the concepts of discipline and obedience in her classroom. She gradually begins to earn their trust and buys them composition books to record their diaries, in which they talk about their experiences of being abused, seeing their friends die, and being evicted; Gruwell refers to the composition books as “The Freedom Writers Diary.”
Standing up for what is right is one theme that is shown numerous times as the book progresses. As you are reading the novel, you see several characters stand up for what they think is right. The Hubermann family decides to help a Jewish man hide from the soldiers by letting him live in their basement. If the family were to get caught they would be in major trouble for hiding a Jewish man. Hans Hubermann also gives an old man (that is too weak to walk) a slice of bread while the Jews walk to the concentration camp. Right after Hans gets whipped by a soldier and starts to regret what he has done. Even though he regrets what he has done, he did it because he cared for everyone even if they were Jewish. Children like Rudy Steiner and Liesel Meminger pass slices of bread out to some of the jews walking by. They get caught and chased into the woods by soldiers. When children were living in this time period, they would have to grow up really fast because of what was happening around them. This shows children that they can do things to help people that truly do need
Freedom Writers is a movie based on the book The Freedom Writers Diary by teacher Erin Gruwell. The movie was directed by Richard LaGravenese and it was released in 2007. This movie discusses significant themes such as stereotyping and racial discrimination but most important the power of tolerance and understanding. The purpose of this movie is to promote the message that knowledge is power and in a world filled with disparities where hundreds of ethnic groups convey and interact humans are obliged to accept and tolerate the differences that define each person. This film is a perfect example of how these rhetorical components are used to create an effective argument. The director of the movie as well as the characters build their
In the 1920s, when movies were a brand new concept, people went to see the pictures in order to escape from their lives. In these movies, everything worked out in the end and they depicted happy, perfect lives. As the Depression raged on, movies were a distraction from the wear and tear of normal life. With the movie Freedom Writers, however, that is not the case. Freedom Writers tells the impossibly true story of a first-year teacher, Erin Gruwell, and the difficulties she faced in her classroom of supposed hopeless cases. In Long Beach, California, her students dealt with gang violence, drugs, and racism in their everyday lives. They lived in constant fear. The movie emphasizes how Gruwell wrestles with the public school system, motivates her students to learn, and changes their lives in the process. Directed by Richard LaGravenese, it came out in 2007 with stars such as Hilary Swank, Patrick Dempsey, and April Hernandez gracing the screen (IMDb). In contrast to the early movies, Freedom Writers deals with issues that are still a problem today, such as a focus on the majority instead of helping students who need extra assistance or encouragement.
The storyline of the movie takes place between 1992-1995. Beginning with scenes from the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Hilary Swank plays the role of Erin Gruwell, a new, excited schoolteacher who leaves the safety of her hometown, Newport Beach, to teach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, a formerly high achieving school which has recently had an integration program put in place. Her enthusiasm is quickly challenged when she realizes that her classes are all "at-risk" students, also known as "un-teachable", and not the eager students she was expecting. The students segregate themselves into racial groups in the classroom, fights break out, and eventually most
The film “Freedom Writers” by Richard LaGravenese has been successful in terms of expressing the emotions of students through their diaries but also engaging the audience emotions through the characters’ gang experiences. The character of Mrs Gruwell(Mrs G) is a teacher of low performing students trying to achieve their goals against all odds. Techniques the director used to show this include flashbacks, non-diegetic sound, spot light and pan shots which are all important in sending the message to the audience that family problems and violence have a big impact on the students lives.
In the movie, The Freedom Writers Mrs. Erin Gruwell (Hillary Swank) plays a role of a dedicated teacher who did all she could, to help her students learn to respect themselves and each other. She has little idea of what she's getting into when she volunteers to be an English teacher at a newly integrated high school in Long Beach, California. Her students were divided along racial lines and had few aspirations beyond basic survival. Mrs. Gruwell was faced with a big challenge when a group of freshmen students showed her nothing but disrespect which made it hard for her to communicate, teach and understand them. However, Erin Gruwell was determined that no matter the cost she would teach her students not only
A perfect example of a movie that demonstrates how poverty and feelings of oppression affect school violence is “Freedom Writers.” In this movie a 23 year old teacher named Erin Gruwell (Hilary swank) takes on the challenge of teaching at a school full of students brought up in gangs. These students had been written off by their school as hopeless cases but she tried to change that and get through to them by buying them new books such as Anne Frank and believing in them.
Erin Gruwell is a first-year English teacher. She was given a tough freshmen english class to teach. The students in the class were all in gangs, coming from similar walks of life as each other, but not knowing or understanding what other students were going through. The students had such a hate for each other that Erin Gruwell was having a difficult time getting the students to pay attention to the english lesson she was presenting. Her husband and father told her to suffer through the year then apply for a new job at a better school, the other teachers told her to just pass the time and not worry about teaching the students english. She caught the students making fun of another because of his large lips, she then explained that they were recreating a modern Holocaust. After taking a poll of the class, Erin found only one student knew what the Holocaust was. Erin Gruwell then developed her new teaching philosophy, she would use English to teach her students; instead of teaching her students english.
In the film, Freedom writers contained wide variety of sensitive topics. From prejudice to racism it dived into the unspoken part of society.

Through the brief but meaningful snippets of what happened during the trial of Rodney King, the viewers were introduced to the conflict used in the film that surfaced and distinctly placed attention on the concept of belonging.
The movie Freedom Writers is about Erin Gruwell who is starting her first year as an English teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School. This school is racially divided with many gangs and violence erupting at any time. Ms. Gruwell was the students main subject of hate too. After having a discussion with her students about what they were feeling about their lives and situations, she took the responsibility of educating the students no matter what the cost was. She would eventually get through to the teens by passing out journals for them to write their personal life stories in. As the year went on, the students started to trust Ms.Gruwell. The next academic year, she had the students getting along with one another and reading The Diary of Ann Frank. She faced many critics within the school, but she ultimately succeeded.
