Freedom Writers is a movie based on the book The Freedom Writers Diary by teacher Erin Gruwell. The movie was directed by Richard LaGravenese and it was released in 2007. This movie discusses significant themes such as stereotyping and racial discrimination but most important the power of tolerance and understanding. The purpose of this movie is to promote the message that knowledge is power and in a world filled with disparities where hundreds of ethnic groups convey and interact humans are obliged to accept and tolerate the differences that define each person. This film is a perfect example of how these rhetorical components are used to create an effective argument. The director of the movie as well as the characters build their …show more content…
Even, when the students seem careless and do not tolerate the professor, Gruwell guided by her ideals and big heart refuses to allow her students to be incompetent and gave her students a chance to overcome the limitations imposed on them by society and themselves. She encouraged them to do something remarkable and memorable and assign them a journal where they could feel free to express their emotions and feeling and essentially tell the stories that define them. Gruwell draws students’ attention by assigning them The Diary of Anne Frank, a book that promptly become a guide for the students and open their minds and eyes against intolerance and misunderstanding. Inspired by this book, the students raised funds to bring Miep Gies, the woman who sheltered the Frank family, to visit them in California where she declared that the students are the real heroes. LaGravanese makes an excellent job with the characters, the soundtrack, and the scenery, making the message clear for the audience. Throughout the movie, the director uses many strong facts that strengthen his credibility and appeal to ethos, as well as build the movie’s argument. The director establishes his credibility by showing the audience actual video footage of Los Angeles area from the early 1990s and a series of captions demonstrated the racial tension between different gangs. The movie “Freedom Writers” is based on a true story. Hilary Swank as Erin Gruwell plays an inspirational teacher at Wilson High School. She is ready to take on the teaching world as she steps inside Wilson High School for her first day. Her class, varied with teenagers of different ethnic backgrounds, wants nothing more than to just get through the day. African Americans, Latinos, Asians, gang members, and much more are from poor neighborhoods, that all share a similar hatred for each other. On the first day of teaching she is very scared and unsure, but she knows she has to stop the racism in the class as well as their attitude towards life. Despite her students' persistent refusal to participate
In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the United States, explains to his readers why the colonies chose to abolish Great Britain’s government. His goal is to inform the readers that the government has certain responsibilities to the governed and that the British failed to adhere to its responsibilities to its colonists. His second goal is to justify their actions by explaining why it was not considered treason. By establishing his credibility and appealing to ethos, pathos and logos, Jefferson successfully wrote an informative, impactful, and inspirational document.
Every movie has a message that it is trying to convey. Whether it be a horror movie trying to show you how deranged people can be. Action movies that show what a hero had to go through to finally be deamed of the title. Documentaries, that want to teach about history and past event and how that we can learn from them and not make the same mistakes. With these lessons that we learn, we have to take the initiative to apply this to our day to day life. The world is like our “classroom,” the lessons that we learn in one part of life, we must take and apply to others. The main message within The Freedom Writers is that even though people may have many differences with those around themselves, individuals will always have similarities with them that
Erin Gruwell, a first time teacher, looked forward to teaching at an integrated school. She somehow transformed these troubled teens into students eager to learn. Ms. G gave the students books that they could relate to. They found that if they could relate to a girl named Anne Frank, who lived so many years ago, surely they could find a way to relate to each other. The students began writing journal entries about the struggles they faced every day out on the streets. They wrote about gangs, drugs, violence, abuse, death, suicide, and all the other problems nobody had ever let them voice before.
There is a white, frustrated man looking straight forward. His hair is as white as snow, with a mean look on his face. It looks as if he wants to say something, but can’t. He has this striped, red, white, and blue, flag on his mouth as if it’s making him keep quiet. His background is pitch black and shows no delight in anything. It has big white bold words saying, “Freedom of Speech”. He has on a white collared shirt with a black jacket on. His eyes are as if they are furious and cannot wait until his mouth is uncovered. Half of his face looks like he is trying to come out of the shadows and trying to be acknowledged. I am doing a rhetorical analysis on this picture that interest me and should be noticed by others.
There is a reason Anne Frank’s diary is a widely known and valued piece of literature. That is because of Anne's talent as a writer. If Anne was not the great writer we know today, her fascinating story would just be another lost story in the Holocaust. Her tragic death makes us see the horrible things humans can do to each other. “The Diary of a Young Girl,” proves that the old statement, “Man is a wolf to man,” is in fact true and for this very reason, we learn from this diary that we shouldn't be bystanders when horrible things happen right under our noses. Her diary makes us see how much a human being can suffer under the worst imaginable situations. This is exactly why Mr. Godinez should teach, “The Diary of a Young Girl,” because it teaches teens to not be bystanders and to value everything they have. If Mr. Godinez decides not the teach, “The Diary of a Young Girl,” it would be an insult to Anne Frank’s devotion and legacy as one of the best writers who ever
The Freedom Writers Diary was published in 1999, the book brings insight to all the struggles the teenagers at Wilson High School had to face and had gone through. Soon after the Freedom Writers movie came out in the year of 2007, the film gives viewers a better understanding on how the students came to making their own book. The book and the movie have very unique differences. But I strongly believe the film is much better than the book. When I had finished watching the film, I thought it was great, but then I came to finding out it was based on real life stories that happened.
Her love and responsibility became more powerful. She wanted to do more things for her students. She even did three jobs at a period of time to earn money. She used the money to buy the books, The Diary of Anne Frank, which was a story about a little girl that during the Second World War. Everyone were enjoying the story told by Anne. Eva, a black girl in Erin`s class, was really attracted by the story. When she found Anne was dead in the ending, she couldn’t believe that. How could such a loving girl killed by the cruel soldiers! Eva was angry and couldn’t understand. Ms. G invited a people familiar with The Diary of Anne Frank to give a speech. Students were looking forward this lady`s coming. In fact, children had influence in her love and responsibility heart. A sentient speech, the class learned more about lives. Some change were happened to the students in Room 203, they became positive about their study. The classroom was always full of happiness. The love and time she spent on the students had got some
After the students finished their letters, Ms. Gruwell had a chance to read them and really saw the effort that her students put into them. At this point she decided to try and reach out to Zlata. It took a lot of time and determination to track down Zlata but Ms. Gruwell believed that her students deserved this. In the midst of her students raising money for Zlata and waiting for her response, Ms. Gruwell was contacted by Miep Gies, the lady who housed and found Anne Frank’s diary. Miep was coming to California for the fiftieth anniversary of Anne Frank’s diary. Before meeting Miep, the students had the opportunity to listen to a holocaust survivor named Gerda Seifer. Through Gerda the students were able to understand “the message for tolerance that Anne died for and Gerda survived for.” (Gruwell, p. 85)
The students who wrote The Freedom Writer’s Diary went through a miraculous change not only in their education, but also in their outlook on life. The teenagers in this book express no interest in school and have already accepted their life of pain and failure. As the book goes on and their teacher, Ms.Gruwell, teaches them the importance of literature, and soon their whole opinion on school has changed. The kids made a real connection with the story of Anne Frank, in that she had been discriminated against, and put through a war because of it. The students have also been discriminated against because of their race or family history, their whole lives. After reading this book the students drew hope and strength from Anne Frank, because they
Freedom Writers is a film based on a true story about a young teacher, Erin Gruwell, who faces racial barriers at an integrated high school in Long Beach California. The article displays the teaching methods used by Gruwell in order to help her students face their academic struggles that are obstructed by their everyday lives. Choi divides Gruwell’s methods of teaching into four main categories. Such as, rewriting curriculum, treating student’s creators of knowledge, creating a classroom community, and teaching self realization. Once Gruwell knew what type of students she was managing she immediately knew that she would have to modify her teaching methods. Choi insists that Gruwell and her revolutionary pedagogy began when she changed the school curriculum according to the interests of her class. “This decision

The film “The Freedom Writers” was released in 2007 and was directed by Richard LaGravanese. Richard used multiple film techniques to help the viewers understand how the characters are feeling, their relationships with other characters and what their personality is like. These techniques include camera shots, costume, and lighting, and they were helpful to create a theme of perseverance. In one scene, room 203 is spending a lot of time to raise money so Miep Gies, an elderly lady who lived through World War II and helped hide Anne Frank, can come visit them. After a dance concert and a bake sale, both of which were very popular, they had raised enough for Gies to travel to America. During their struggle to fundraise, Margaret the head teacher would continuously complain to the principle that they shouldn’t be able to do so, to no avail. When Miep arrives, students have created a big, bright sign, welcoming her to their school, and they all listen with rapt attention as she tells them her experience in the war.
Have you ever been discriminated or treated differently because who you are and what your color is? Well in the movie “Freedom Writers” the characters work on toleration and acceptance through reading and writing. Since they are from the city of long beach of California that wasn’t easy, considering all the racial tension/conflict that goes on there.
Just like how Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) turned the lights on, in the dark room of 203. Freedom Writers is a film inspired by students of Woodrow Wilson High School as they experience the aftermath of LA riots. Los Angeles resembles a war zone back in the 1992. During this time in America, it all comes down to what a person look like. Latino, Asian, and Black got blasted by those who think they are superior from the rest. Different cultures fight each other for territory and kill each other over race, pride and respect.
