The time period of the 1850 's were the years leading up to Civil War in which many events took place that changed America. Many factors contributed to influencing the Civil War. The three major factors leading up to the Civil War were the Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas- Nebraska Act, and the anti-slavery violence of John Brown. All of these significant events changed American in either one way or another. Growing tensions between the North and the South led to major factors during the 1850s. The Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas- Nebraska Act, and John Brown marked a turning point in American history which ultimately led to the Civil War. The Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, added stringent amendments to law that was passed earlier, including that citizens had to assist with finding runaway slaves or else they will face serious consequences. Citizens who assisted a fugitive slave could be fined or imprisoned. This law required citizens to turn in slaves if they find them and or if they know them. Soldiers of the American Civil War were overwhelmed by a time where weaponry and technological developments were thriving. This brutal war changed the soldiers, both mentally and physically, and continued to have an impact throughout their entire lives. There were not only many deaths during the war, but also prior to the war as many soldiers took their own life. They would experience disturbing thoughts and events in their mind that could not be explained until they became known as mental illnesses. The exploration of psychological disorders following the Civil War improved medical diagnostic tools and the way patients were treated which transformed the treatment of mental illness by creating new ways of discovering illnesses, treating patients, and developing the foundation for the future of psychology throughout America.
The war produced about 1,030,000 casualties, including about 620,000 soldier deaths—two-thirds by disease, and 50,000 civilians. The war accounted for roughly as many American deaths as all American deaths in other U.S. wars combined.
The Fugitive Slave Law or Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was a law passed by the United States Congress on September 18th. During the 1860s there were many issues and that the Southern and Northern states needed to work on. In 1861 hundreds of thousands of Americans volunteered to fight in the Civil War, also known as the First Modern War. The main causes of this war were the economic and social differences between the North and the South. These differences led to other fundamental issues such as slavery and its abolition. This act single-handedly accelerated the already growing tension between the North and South with the issue of slavery, which is believed to be a major factor in the causation of the Civil

In the Holt textbook, it states,”Slaveholders were permitted to take suspected fugitives to U.S commissioners, who decided their fate….Commissioners who rejected slaveholders claim earned $5 while those who returned suspected fugitives to slaveholders earned $10”(Holt 441). This represents that the commissioners who helped slaveholders gained more money than rejecting the slaveholders claim. This acknowledges that the North got really mad for passing this law that favored in the South. This event was crucial for starting the Civil War because the North wanted to get and stop the South from getting slaves, and it favored in the South more, so it angered the
While both men had very strong cases for their side of the secession debate they were unable to compromise resulting in the Civil War. The South felt they were being ignored in the Union and felt as though they could accomplish more and be happier under their own rule. While they put forth a large amount of effort in their attempt to be free and continue the expansion of slavery they ultimately failed and were defeated by the more efficient North.
