The short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, by D.H Lawrence, Begins with an introduction of the character Hester, a mother of three children, and a wife. Hester is described as a beautiful woman, who was doing well with her life, until she had realized after being married, that she was unlucky. She felt that since her husband was not a wealthy man, that he was unlucky therefore, she was unlucky. Hester shared no compassion with her children. She felt as if they were just unpurposely apart of her life, and she truly could not love them, although her peers gain the sense that she is a compassionate mother that loves her children. However, when Hester received the first payment, she requested that the payment would be advanced in full, so that she may pay her debts. The money had only made things worse, as tension began to increase much more, and so did the constant whispers, “There must be more money”. The situation is alarming to Paul, so he focuses on winning the upcoming derby, in order to win big and end his family’s woes. As Hester comes home, she walks in on Paul falling off his rocking horse, shouting the name of the horse he believes to win “Malabar”. As Malabar turns out to be the winning horse, Hester denies her son's remarks that he told her he was lucky as she says, “No, you never did”. When the story ends with Paul’s death, Oscar describes Paul as a “poor devil”. Although Paul intended to do good for his mother, he is portrayed as a demonic creature because his rocking horse ultimately lead to his own death. In this story, the majority of these conflicts stand out to be moral conflicts. this is because the issues in the story always involved money, which is simply a material that lead to all the problems that the family
