The plane crashed at the top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere. In The Mountain Between Us, Alex and Ben both were trying to fly out of Idaho so Alex could be at her wedding and Ben could perform surgery the next morning. The airport had shut down due to an oncoming snow-storm. The strangers flew out together on a small plane. The pilot had a heart attack mid flight and the plane crashed. Neither Ben nor Alex wanted to die and their hope to live encouraged teamwork and patience so both of them could eventually make it to safety. Similarly in Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses George, Lennie, and Candy’s relationship to teach the reader that hope can bring people together. George and Lennie were talking about the farm and how it was going to be. Candy proposes “s’pose I went in with you guys… I ain't much good but I can cook and tend the chickens and how the garden some” (59). Candy does not want to spend the rest of his life on the ranch either. When he learns that he could get a farm with George and Lennie if he works through the end of the month his hopes grew big. Candy came to Crooks’ room where Crooks and Lennie were talking and says “tell ya what, Lennie. I been figuring out about them rabbits” (74). Candy spends his time thinking about what the best way to do things moving forwards is so that all the men can still live a successful life after they get the farm they are hoping for. Candy becomes George and Lennie’s friend because he hopes that this will get him closer to having a farm of his own. In Of Mice and Men, George, Lennie and Candy’s relationship shows how hope can bring people together in many ways. Hope brings George and Lennie together by strengthening their friendship. Hope also brings George, Lennie and Candy together by giving the three of them new
Throughout life, many of our journeys leave us feeling despondent and unwanted. It is when we travel with another human soul that we are not left feeling so austere. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie are two wandering souls, both very different in stature and appearance, yet very alike in spirit. It is in this relationship that the true foundation of companionship is expressed.
Strong friendships have the power to make people’s lives better. George and Lennie travel together and eventually live together, resulting in a strong bond between them. George cares for Lennie and he makes sure
For the longest time they had both talked about their desire to become landowners and to grow their own crops. All Lennie wanted was to grow alfalfa to feel to his rabbits. Their shared dreams being out of reach is apparent to the reader until Candy comes into the picture. Candy, a hardworking ranch handyman comes in with a full-fledged proposal. He offers them all of the money he saved up to fund a bit of land George and Lennie had their eyes on. In return, he would like to live on the land with them. They all agree that this is what they will do and not to let anyone know. Lennie destroys this dream by accidentally crushing Curley’s wife’s spine. George, Lennie, and Candy’s dream fails to become reality because of Lennie’s ignorance and strength.
What is it like to have a dream that makes you feel alive, that gives you another reason to rise and to strive in the morning and throughout the rest of your life? During the 1930’s this was often found within migrant workers who were searching for “The American Dream” of, at the time of the Great Depression, land, wealth, and liberty. Sadly, most people failed to find “The American Dream” and ended up isolated and empty. Dreams are the reason people chose to suffer this pain. In the novella, Of Mice and Men, the author, John Steinbeck, has demonstrated through dreams and false hope that they cause more trouble than good.
Regardless of how intensely the characters of this novel hope and dream, their plans do not find fulfillment. Due to the lack of fulfillment of their dream, the characters face loneliness setting each apart from the other. Unlike George and Lennie, the other character of Crooks has no one to support him and be there for him as Lennie and George have each other. In the story, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck contrasts the loneliness and isolation experienced by Crooks, whom life has made abandon his dream of equality, with the closeness of Lennie and George, establishing a false sense of hope for the achievement of their dream, making the ending tragic because they lose both the dream and their unique friendship no
“And when they gone, Candy squatted down in the hay and watched the face of Curley’s wife. ‘Poor bastard,’ he said softly.” Sometimes through false hope, we tend to get to sucked into unrealistic dreams which can lead us to becoming a victim of our own vulnerabilities. Throughout the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, false hopes and dreams have impacted our society and how some people live their lives today. John Steinbeck uses metaphors and foreshadowing to show how false hopes and dreams can sometimes result in something not as great as it was once believed to be, which can ultimately impact our society.
Lennie had a dream to stay with George, live alone together on a farm, and to tend the rabbits they’re going to buy. Lennie and George went to go work on a farm, which they were going to get money from to fulfill their dream. They meet a lot of new people, some are nice and some are mean. One day Lennie gets himself in trouble by accidentally killing Curley’s wife and now he had to pay the price. Lennie’s dream affected Candy and George in a positive way by giving Candy hope and giving George a friend and a life, but it affected Curley’s wife, George, and Candy also in a negative way too by killing Candy’s wife.

The people with dreams are the one that have hope for the future, especially if the belief in the dream never falters. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck expresses the concept that dreams create hope for those that do not give up on their aspiration, no matter what happens.
The War on Optimism If you look through the news, you will find a plethora of despondent-sounding articles telling of mass shootings, acquitted offenders, and ongoings of current wars. But where is the “good news,” the essential faith in humanity? It is drowned out by the cries of the throbbing mob that demands negativity and cynicism. Why?
Dreams are what keep all of the men going. They need something to hang on to in the hopes of a better life in the future. George and Lennie have a dream before they even get to the ranch. Slim doesn’t believe anybody's dreams come true. Curley’s wife says the men with dreams spend their money at the whorehouse without thinking twice about it and ruin their dreams.
Out of all the men that worked at the ranch, Candy and Crook were the last ones expected to have offered to help George and Lennie achieve their purchasing of farming land. Some may say that Candy and Crook were just being selfish, but they weren't. They were genuinely wanting to help. Candy offered to pay his share of the cost of the land. Just knowing that someone supported their decision, no matter how far fetched it may be seemed made it look promising to both George and Lennie.
Hope is a realistic expectation or desire for a particular thing to be fulfilled, whilst dream is a fantasy involving imagination, which happens to be frequently indulged in. ‘Of Mice and Men’, was based in America in the time of the Great Depression. This caused many migrant workers to travel to places like California and other parts of America in search of work. It can be said that the workers were at the mercy of the American Dream; having nothing else to turn to, it gave them hope for a new and better life. John Steinbeck creates a story to show that dreams are just a figment of a persons’ imagination and are destined to fail.
In TV shows, the main protagonist or protagonists almost all the time beats the main antagonist because they have hope and a goal. Hope affects people by giving them reasons and will to achieve their goals. Hope, dreams, and goals, provide people with reasons to try harder at something they want, and is evident in Of Mice and Men, The Will and Ways of Hope, and The Secret of Life by Walter Mitty.
