Role models inspire and set examples, leaving lasting impressions and shaping who we become. My father’s non-verbal actions and displays of character have had a profound influence on my development. His most impressive quality is his passion to continuously grow his knowledge, specifically about the field of medicine. He was a thoracic surgeon for over twenty years before immigrating to the United States, but was unable to practice after coming here, resulting in a depression. However, he persevered, and did not let this prevent him from staying involved in the medical community. Even after ten years of retirement, he continues to educate himself, staying updated with surgical and technology developments. Witnessing his commitment and drive, day after day, year after year, has molded the person I am today.
His behaviors and tendencies keep me inspired to act in a similar manner by striving for excellence, and seeing roadblocks as lessons to be learned rather than potential failures. Reflecting to carefully examine who I am, and what I desire for my future reveal that not one single event or characteristic led me here. Rather, the combination of many seemingly mundane and unconnected life experiences in addition to my personal character confirms that I am ready to take the step into medical school.
Growing up in an environment full of diversity allowed me to appreciate and understand cultural differences while learning how to regard a situation from many points of view. It
As the coming years approach, I want my future to hold both the passion to explore new opportunities and the strength to overcome new challenges. With the experiences of my high school career, I aspire to take all the things I learned to transition into a college environment where my ideas can be challenged and shared. Where I can learn from others; where I can seek the opportunity to make a direct impact towards saving lives. I believe I can do great things. Through tenacity I will not only be gratified in becoming a doctor, but also be able to share my compassion for others through
Diversity enhances my life, when people have an understanding of my needs and I have an understanding of theirs. As an ex sailor, in the Royal Navy, I have been lucky enough to travel and witness many cultures. I was extremely lucky to be invited to an Indian wedding once, which was an experience I will cherish.
I believe that my background has given me the tools to appreciate the diversity in people and be more accepting and inquisitive of different cultures. I'm trilingual and working on learning my fourth language, (never thought French was so
What diversity means to me is each and every individual in this world is unique. No one is the same so that’s why learning about new cultures, languages, lifestyles, religion, beliefs and traditions is enjoyable for humans. If everyone were the same, life would be boring. The unique characteristics that people possess can be vastly different. I have an open mind and am willing to be educated by people with different cultures because it gives the opportunity to gain increased knowledge about their lives. When people are accepting of others that’s when you have a better chance to

A strong work ethic, cultural competence, compassion, and a desire to learn are a few of the personal qualities that have influenced me to become a physician. To achieve this, my current professional goals are to be accepted into the George Squared Special Master’s Program/Biomedical Sciences MS and to persevere and succeed in order to reach my specific career objective of gaining entry into medical school and becoming a family medicine physician especially to serve underserved and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Although growing up I may have lacked the role models and exposure to medicine needed to cultivate my desire to become a physician, what I had were personal examples of hardworking role models – my parents. With their
Diversity helps people learn about other ways of life and what goes on in other places of the world. It
When it comes to the topic of diversity and what is has taught me I really think of a few things. Diversity has really taught me a lot about myself as well as tolerance to others around me. Really there is nowhere in the world today that diversity is not present or has not had some sort of effect on our society as a whole. All in all I think that diversity really just means being different than others in various ways. I think if the United States never had any instances of diversity we would be a pretty boring and simple society. Many of our great minds of today as well as the past where very
Adversity has only improved my tenacity, focus, endurance, and problem solving abilities. Various circumstances have affected my academic performance negatively, but I use that as motivation to continually improve myself. I want to be a part of the solution to the family physician shortage and serve the community in the most effective way. My drive to improve the lives of others will help propel me through the difficulties of medical school and beyond. The personal experience I have with my immersion in the field of primary care gives me unique characteristics that will translate into creating a successful physician that focuses on building meaningful relationships with patients. I continually witness how my grandfather is positively impacting the community through medicine and it is my goal to be granted an opportunity to do the same. My belief in lifelong learning and continual self-improvement consistently drives me towards the study of medicine. Because of my life experiences, I now have the balance, endurance, clarity, and tenacity needed to be a successful medical
Being raised in a diverse community has taught me to be compassionate, insightful, and understanding what happens in the real world. Growing up I was always very blessed to have two parents who loved and cared for me as much as they did, and who have blessed me with a life that everyone deserves. I am very fortunate that my parents have raised me in such a diverse community because I believe that it has shaped me to be the person that I am today.
By becoming aware with the issues that permeate our lives and interacting with those that are different from us, we can develop in each of us sensitivity to other cultures so that we may expand our horizons, tolerate diversity, and promote
The information that has helped me better understand about diversity in the united states in ways that I did not know in the pass was that diversity is a big picture that help shape the world. it gives ma a chance to explore more about others, there countries and more about there experiences that help shape there culture. Within this time I have really also learned that different things can be diverse and there are different ways that diverse situations can be dealt with. Diversity has really gave me an opportunity to see that some cultures can relate better to some countries for example like Japanese and Chinese people. diversity is all around us and is a thing that should make the united States proud of.
Growing up in New York City and attending public school my whole life gave me the opportunity to grow up in a diverse environment which in turn has helped to broaden my perspective socially and culturally. These experiences allowed me at a young age to become friends with other immigrants and people whose culture, ethnicity, religion, and experiences were completely different from my own. Friends have taught me things like cultural norms and what is and isn't acceptable in other religions. Another experience that I that changed my perspective was taking the career pathway biomedical science because it helped me see academic courses in a different way. It showed me that school wasn't only tests, solving math problems, and writing essays. In
Role models influence us as humans. We use our parents, community leaders, and even celebrities to shape ourselves in a similar way to them. Media, like a role model, influences society. Also, media, which society creates, is also the tool that shapes and moulds it. The theory that media (technology) shapes society – technological determinism – is introduced by Canadian scholars Harold Innis and Marshall. Though this is a technologically determinist way of looking at communication, the different modes of communication (media) – oral, literate, and electronic –influence society through the way we store knowledge, through the manner in which we share knowledge, and through the way we connect with each other socially.
