In the 2008 Disney movie, WALL-E, earth is the victim to massive ignorance of environment safety and consumerism, which forces the humans to evacuate to space (IMDB, n.d.). In said film, viewers are introduced to the idea that in the future our social interactivity will be morphed due to the ease of access to technology. Disney establishes a potential argument in that with the advancement of technology, we are on course to become a civilization who just “sits in isolation communicating and doing everything via an Internet connection”(Shepard, 2013, para 4). This is a farfetched prediction, but it gives a reason to evaluate today’s social interactivity. It might go unnoticed, but social interactivity has changed quite a bit since the invention of the Internet. The Internet has become one of the greatest sources for entertainment, news, and much more. One of the largest impacts on how we interact with each other is the evolution of social media. Instead of face-to-face conversation, people are now able to share their thoughts instantly to a much wider audience online. We are now able to receive news before the news reporters know about.
Social media has evolved the news medium. With over 60% of news reporters now using social media sites to expand their audience (“Social Networking”, 2012). News sites are able to reach a younger audience and are able to dispense news to people who would usually ignore the news. With the vast majority of people sharing their thoughts on current events it is inevitably to come across some news article. We are getting to the point in society that not having our phone on us at any time could put us out of the loop.
