Successful CIOs in Organizations In today’s technology driven world, the role of IT in organizations is of upmost importance. Likewise, the role of Chief Information Officer (CIO) has grown from only a service provider to an executive level position. CIOs normally report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and their managerial expertise effects the entire organization (Chun, 2009). This essay will evaluate how CIOs can ensure that IT in their organization will support value creation and strategic advantage over the next five years. This holistic approach can be demonstrated through implementing Enterprise Architecture, which is “a comprehensive operational framework that explores all of an organizations functional areas while defining how technology benefits and serves the organization's overall mission.” Enterprise Architecture shows how operating systems, programs, networks, and hardware can be used in every part of the organization to accomplish its objectives (Techopedia). With regards to managing technology, successful CIOs should “help to develop and execute an end-to-end innovation process in which innovations are more likely to be discovered, better assessed, and better converted into profits.” According to a study done by PricewaterhouseCoopers, close to 70 percent of CEOs are investing in IT to reduce costs and become more efficient, while 54 percent are also funneling funds toward growth initiatives.” To accomplish these initiatives, the CIO must help design and direct the innovation process and create and apply technology to the innovation process. Although these are not only technology roles, CIOs are now expected to have a “strategic business role” in organizations (PwC, 2017). Lastly, a CIO should monitor and evaluate the IT department and organization through the use of metrics. A few of the many metrics that could be used are end user satisfaction, average hours to close tickets by type, business value, velocity of idea-to-offer cycle, and security. End user satisfaction
