This was an important time in America post 9/11 because although Muslims were being discriminated and targeted. Muslim American advocacy organizations urged their people to claim their rights as Americans, to raise their voices, to fight back against hate crimes, bias incidents, prejudice and discrimination, and governmental abuses of power. They responded in typical American fashion, through political activism, legal challenges, and social
Post 9/11 negative stereotypes and attitudes toward Muslims intensified in many Western societies. “The FBI recorded a sixteen-fold increase in hate crimes (e.g., acts of arson, aggravated assault, property crimes) against Muslim Americans from 2001 to 2002” (Rodriguez Mosquera & Khan & Selya, 2013). All of this goes to show that Non-Muslim Americans were taking out their emotions on innocent Muslims. Not only was all this going on, but the U.S. Congress’ response to the attacks was the USA Patriot Act. The USA Patriot Act gave, “the government investigative powers to fight against terrorism and subsequently targeted those in the Arab, Muslim, and South Asian communities with not just prejudices against these communities, but blatant racism toward innocent people, just because they appear to look like they “identify” with those who have made terrorist threats” (Akiyama, 2008). The discrimination post 9/11 was awful. The hijab which was seen as a prideful garment for Muslims became a target for discrimination. In the article, “9/11 Ten Years Later: Muslim Women, Organizations Work to Fight Discrimination, Patel talks about a woman, Wasan Mohamad. Mohamad talks about how she and her friends/family were discriminated against ten years after 9/11. Her daughter in class got told that her people were responsible for 9/11. Her friend changed his name from
On September 11, 2001, 19 activists connected with the Islamic radical gathering al-Qaeda seized four carriers and did suicide assaults against focuses in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon simply outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane slammed in a field in Pennsylvania. Frequently alluded to as 9/11, the assaults brought about far reaching demise and demolition, activating major U.S. activities to battle terrorism and characterizing the administration of George W. Shrubbery. More than 3,000 individuals were slaughtered amid the assaults in New York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400 cops and firefighters.
When the citizens of the United States went to bed on September 10th, 2001 they had no idea that the events the next day would change their lives in one way or another for the rest of their lives. September 11th began just like any other day but by the end of the day, almost 3,000 people died in four separate deliberate terrorist attacks against the United States. The events on September 11th had shocked the world, caused billions of dollars in damages and made Americans question their sense of security. The attacks on September 11th, conducted by the Islamic extremist group, al-Qaeda, was an important event in United States history because it was the deadliest and biggest terrorist attack on American soil and caused extensive death and destruction
four airlines and carried out suicide attacks against the United States buildings. 2,996 people were killed and more than 6,000 other were injured. 9/11 was the biggest influence on the United States. The attacks on 9/11 toward the buildings, there has been changes in airports and the immigration system. There has been domestic spying on the citizens of United States, people were changing their trust in the government, and the ongoing wars.
The War on Terror is a campaign by the United States and some of our allies to control international terrorism. The attack on September 11, caused a lot of panic and worry about terrorism, pushing this into action. After the plane crashes of September 11, a lot of Americans were afraid. They thought that some attacks might/could occur in their country at any time. Following the 9/11 attacks, another wave of attacks hit. Letters containing anthrax spores were sent to people in the news, and to members of Congress in D.C. When you inhale the anthrax it can damage your lungs, and cause death.
After a horrible terroristic attack that shocked the whole world on September 11th in the center of New York City, Muslims in the Western world have been constantly fighting against prejudice. After September 11, media interest in Islam increased, where Islam was usually portrayed in a negative way. Before 9/11, many Muslims lived the normal, everyday life. However, the attack has changed lives of many people that belonged to the Muslim community, where they were the victims of guilt. Unfortunately, many Americans were introduced to Islam, after the 9/11 attack, thus even till today, Islam is associated with terrorism. For the past ten years, Muslims felt excluded from the American society by being rifled, attacked, discriminated, checked
One of the first debates in America after 9/11 was how to prevent any other terrorist attack. This led Senator Joe Lieberman from Connecticut and Senator Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania to create the infrastructure of the Department of Homeland Security. They introduced this to legislation just eleven days after 9/11.(3) Originally, Bush and his team rejected the idea. After democrats in the senate pushed the idea for more than six months, Bush finally agreed to form the Department of Homeland Security in June, 2002.
It took only a total of 12 seconds for the twin towers to fall on September 11, 2001. 2,753 people were killed including 343 police and firefighters. The events of 9/11 changed the views of air safety, foreign policy, and Middle Eastern relations. As a result of the attacks, the world took on a new perspective regarding the religion that the hijackers belonged to. Islam and jihad were now associated with terrorism and hijacking planes. The bond between Islamic extremists and plane accidents was formed, resulting in irrational fear and intolerance towards many Muslims. Henry Perowne is no different. When the burning plane was flying outside his window, he immediately assumed the cause was jihadists. Similarly, Theo asks his father if terrorists
In my opinion, I believe that Americans worry more about natural hazards than terrorist attacks and that is how I think it should be. Americans will never forget the horrific attacks of September 11th. That fateful day will forever be embedded in my mind. I still recall attempting to explain it to my son, who was only five at the time, when he asked me why anyone would want to fly planes into buildings.
September 11, 2001, the one day America will never forget, ignited the new era of warfare; the war against terror. As a result, the general public grew fearful and aware to the possibilities of another terrorist attack on the American soil. The controversial counter-terrorism television show 24 pierced that fear off the viewers' minds. However, the show's unorthodox methods, theatrical plots, and media influence also changed the public's outlook of the proper and constitutional way of interrogation.
At the end of chapter 1 the commission states: “the conflict did not begin on 9/11”. The 9/11 report gives several examples of how the conflict of terrorism began many years before that tragic day. The Pentagon became worried about the external threat of terrorism as a result of hostages being taken as early as the 1970’s.There were many events looking back that gave America clues that an attack was planned. Hopefully looking at these events will help America plan to prevent future attacks of this kind.
Terrorism and the United States A cloud of anthrax spores looming in the sky of San Diego California
The September 11 attacks have had a significant impact on international cooperation in combating terrorism.
In 1999 there was said to be a huge increase that focused on the terrorism in the United States (fbi.gov). Even though this focus was on terrorism in general, it was mainly focused on the domestic terrorist. Eight of the ten terrorist incidents were those domestic terrorisms that year in the United States. There were seven plots that were prevented by law enforcers this year and in 1998 there were twelve. The seven that occurred in 1999 were because of the Animal Liberation Front also known as ALF. All of these led to financial damages that ended up being more than three million dollars (fbi.gov).
The agonizing terrorist attacks of September 9th, 2001 left the country in emotional distress. The United States of America decided to prepare for tragic attacks like this and reevaluated its immigration and foreign policies, the citizens of the US also became united and stronger from these attacks. This ideology that the US has become more united after an attack that killed nearly 3,000 people has become mainstream and may be true in some cases, but many people overlook the impact it had on the millions of Muslim Americans. The Muslim generation before us had its own problems dealing with racial discrimination and hate crimes, many people believed it stop their but this contempt was passed on to my generation. The discrimination I have received has caused me to change my aspirations in order to ensure that no one else receives the treatment I had gotten.
