The Role Of The Nmc And The Code Of Practice

This presentation is going to talk about person- centred care, confidentiality, respecting privacy and dignity and protecting from risks and harm. The common core principles are important to every Health and Social Care setting as they provide a basis for a general understanding of promoting good mental health and recognising signs of poor mental health among everyone receiving care and support. The aim of care home are to meet the identified needs of individuals who live in that home. An older person might need to live in that care home for years. It is important for staff to be aware of responsibilities in delivering care to support the individuals who live at that home. These common principles of health will help develop the workforce that respond confidently to the individuals and supporting the life they are leading.

A profession can be defined as a “prestigious occupation with a high degree of identification among its member that requires a length and rigorous education in an intellectually demanding and theoretically based course of study; that engages in rigorous self-regulation and control; that holds authority over clients; and that puts service to society above simple self interest” (Schwirian, 1998, p. 6). Nursing is just that, and with its specific body of knowledge, standards, and codes of ethics, it is only fitting that it be self-regulated (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2012). The College of Nurses works with registered nurses, registered practical nurses, and nurse practioners to determine whether or not standards and best practices are met and that the public’s safety is protected.

This essay will explore why consent and confidentiallity is important in midwifery practice. It will look into why it is needed and what can happen if these aspects are breeched in anyway. The National Health service was founded in 1948, this brought free healthcare to everyone. In 1902 the Midwives act becomes a law and midwifery became an established profession, fast forward to 2004 the midwives rules and standards are published and then amended in 2012 and in 2008 the code of conduct was brought into practice. These publications are legal documents in which all nurse and midwives must abide by. In these documents there are clear rules that surround both consent and confidentiality (NHS Choices 2014)

Within the health and social care setting there are numerous peices of legislation and codes of practice designed to protect individuals.These are there to protect from breaches of confidentiality were the information held on that individual is only viewed by staff directly involved in their care.

The NMC (2008) also states that the nurse must recognise and respect the role of the patient/client as partners in their care and the contribution they can make to

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) are responsible for; developing standards and setting codes and guidelines for the nursing profession (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2015, para.1). Nurses need to meet the professional standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia they can do this by being registered with the board to meet the established professional standards in Australia to protect others and the public (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2017, para.1).

I intend to look at why confidentiality is so important within healthcare and how it relates to the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Code. I will look at the

Decision making and best interests of the patient in the care for people with mental health problems are one of the main concerns in nursing practice. Healthcare professionals should be knowledgeable enough to practice the legal code regarding decision making and protection of the patient with mental health problems (NMC, 2008).

The second category of provisions relates to the nurse’s responsibility to maintain their own proficiency and health environments, delegate appropriately, preserve integrity, and keep their practice and competence current. It is crucial that nurses are proficient and maintain competency in order to deliver high quality care to patients. "The virtue of professional competence calls for continual professional growth and a commitment to lifelong learning. You must practice nursing that’s evidence-based, be knowledgeable about the scope and standards of nursing practice, and have the necessary skills to perform nursing tasks effectively” [ (Lachman, 2008, p. 44) ].

The CNO outlined professional standards for nurses to comply with. The seven that are outlined are accountability, continuing competence, ethics, knowledge, knowledge application, leadership, and relationships. “A standard is an authoritative statement that sets out the legal and professional basis of nursing practice” (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009, p. 3). Although each standard has different meaning, they all work together in order to provide the best possible patient care.

In this Assignment, we will be looking at and discussing how the Nursing Midwifery Council’s Code (NMC) can guide the provision of person centred nursing care. What is the NMC’s Code? NMC Code is a list of professional requirements that which the nurses and midwives needs to adhere in order to practice in United Kingdom. This Code also helps the nurses and midwives to maintain their professional standards throughout their career. The Code is divided into four important sections. The sections are Prioritise people, Practise effectively and Preserve safety and Promote professionalism and trust (NMC 2015).

In this assignment we will be discussing how the Nursing and Midwifery Council NMC (2015) guides nurses in the direction of good practice. Why we have the code? Who the code is for? How to implement the code in our daily lives as practitioners. The NMC (2015) is a set of guidelines which nurses and midwives must adhere to in order to provide the best care possible to their patients. The NMC (2015) is split into four main sections:

As a nurse you are part of the health care providing team. Of course, such a position comes with a significant amount of responsibility. It is not enough to be well versed in skills that improve the mental and physical well-being of a patient, but a nurse needs to be knowledgeable in the legal standards and requirements of the state in which they are working. Two major divisions in nursing can be used to exemplify the importance of legal knowledge surrounding practice: a nurse’s role as a part of the healthcare team, and the standardization of patient care.
