Zeus was one of the main gods that was featured a lot in the Ancient Greece myths. He was the King of the gods and ruled over the sky, his main symbol was the thunderbolt but others included the eagle and oak tree. His roman counterpart was known as Jupiter or Jove. He appeared in most myths even if they were about other gods often being the one to set the myth up or create the conflict. He was portrayed as an all-powerful protagonist and looked up to whereas today his actions would be seen as selfish and narrow minded making him an antagonist.
He was the considered the King of the gods because he was the one to free them from Cronus’ grip. Before the Gods there where the Titans. They were large monstrous beings that controlled the earth

Each god or goddess ruled over one specific thing which gave a Ancient greeks a specific god to pray to depending on who they were trying to appease. For instance if a farmer wanted a good crop that year they might give offerings to Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. These twelve olympians were Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter, Athena, Artemis, Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares, Hermes, Hephaestus, and Hestia. Hestia would later give her seat up to Dionysus. Hades was not considered one of the twelve olympians despite the fact that he was one of the six original gods, he was left out mainly because he was the God of the Underworld, the Ancient Greeks afterlife. After the war with the Titans Zeus, Poseidon and Hades split the world up among themselves, with Zeus getting the sky, Poseidon the sea and Hades the …show more content…
She was the goddess of childbirth and marriage as well as being the Queen of the Gods. Her symbols included the peacock, the cow and the wedding ring. Her roman counterpart was known as Juno. She married Zeus out of shame after he raped. Hera was Zeus’s one legal wife, as the greeks were monogamous, but this didn't stop him from having sexual relations outside of his marriage. This was because he believed that he didn't need to abide to the laws of the humans. Hera was often portrayed as being spiteful and jealous towards Zeus, because of his constant infidelity. She often would seek revenge on the whomever he took a favour, as she could not directly punish her husband as he had power over her. she would also wreck havoc on the offspring that Zeus would have with over woman and those women themselves even if they had been raped by Zeus. Zeus would often turn on her with violence if she nagged Zeus too much, with one such occasion being when she and the other gods tied Zeus in ropes and plotted to dispose of him. When he eventually got free she hung her by her wrists from the sky with weights tied to her ankles. He eventually let her down when all of the other gods swore not on rebel again. This was not a one time thing through as he would often punish her as a way to show his dominance, and to remind her that as the man of the relationship, he was the one with the power.
Aphrodite was another of the twelve olympians, she was the goddess of love
I chose to write about Zeus for my independent project. By the time my paper is written and finished, I can only hope to have discovered more and more information about him than at the beginning of this essay. Some things I do want to remember and learn about him are what made him so great, is he the Greek God’s leader, and what did he accomplish? When somebody speaks about Greek mythology, it seems as though everyone wants to talk about Zeus. Another thing that I hear very often when Zeus is mentioned is the fact that he controls/carries the lightning bolt. That is Zeus’s symbol. I have for a long while been itching to take in more about him yet never thought to consider his history until today.
Demeter is very angry at Zeus for giving Persephone to Hades to be his wife and queen of the underworld in the Hymn and Zeus is playing the role of someone who is powerful that has made a mistake. To rectify his mistake, Zeus tries to appease Demeter by sending Iris to try to talk some sense into her. The next step he takes is to send all of the gods to her, but she is not able to be consoled. Following these attempts, Zeus decided to send Hermes to the underworld to tell Hades to send Persephone back to them (Nagy: 314-39) While Zeus is playing the forgetful god that is trying to rectify his mistake, he is also playing the powerful god that Zeus is famously known to be as he himself never actually goes on any of the journeys to see Demeter or Hades. Rather than going himself, he displays his power by sending everyone else to do his errands. The only gods in the story that even make decisions on their own are Zeus, Demeter, Hades, and Hekate, but Zeus is shown controlling all of the other gods. Even Hades is being controlled by Zeus to some degree when Zeus sends Hermes to the underworld to tell Hades to allow Persephone to come back to them. In Hesiod’s Theogony, Zeus is given the title of being the most important god, as well as a king of the gods. Zeus’s defining line in Theogony is when he is
Beginning around 700 B.C., stories by Homer and other Greek poets told of the lives of powerful gods who involved themselves in human affairs. Supreme among these gods was Zeus, but to the Romans he was known as Jupiter. Zeus was the supreme god and ruler of Olympus. He was known by many titles: Lord of the Sky, the Cloud- gatherer, the Rain-god, and Zeus the Thunderer. All of which are the most popular names dating back to ancient Greek history and mythology.
Main god Zeus had power, he was the strongest of all gods. He showed greeks he could influence them by showing them how much power he had. People would not disobey Zeus and if they did they would be Punished. Zeus had so much power, he overthrown his father cronos. By doing that he showed how much power he had to the people. When Zeus would Punish other gods it showed he had the power to do that.If any of the gods did something
He is also the son of Cronus and Rhea, and is the second most powerful god. He is one of the three supreme gods of the Earth. (Gall.)
Zeus, he was the king of the gods and the supreme ruler of people. He originally was a god of the sky. In time, the Greeks regarded him as the only god who concerned him-self with the whole universe. They also associated Zeus with justice and believed that he punished the wicked and rewarded the good. He belonged to the race of Titans, and was the son of Cronus and Rhea. After overthrowing Cronus, Zeus took his father's place and ruled from Mount Olympus. He headed a family of twelve major gods, called the Olympians.
“The supreme deity of Greek mythology has his lusty, tempestuous story recast in engaging fashion by Stone”(ProQuest). Zeus was thought of as the father of gods and men. While he did not make them, he protected them, and therefore was considered a father to them. He ruled over the sky and air, and controlled everything that happened in his domains from his throne on Mount Olympus. To gain his throne, he overthrew his father, Cronos, with the help of his siblings, and then dividing up the realms between him and his two elder brothers. Zeus became lord of the sky and rain, Poseidon took the title lord of the sea, and Hades became ruler of the underworld. He then banished his father to the shadowy Tartarus in the underworld. Zeus was the most
Zeus, his name is synonymous with Greek mythology and religion. God of the weather and sky he used his powers of wind, lightning, and thunder to uphold the law and keep order. He ruled Mount Olympus as well as the pantheon of gods who lived there. Watching over mankind he would punish those who defied him and help those who were wronged. However, Zeus did have his flaws. His quick tempered nature combined with his lust for women made him relatable to the common man. From his coming to power until the beginning of Christianity, this complex god would have no equal.
Zeus: He is the king of all gods and goddesses, ruler of Mount Olympus. Zeus is the god of sky and thunder. His symbols would be the thunderbolt, Eagle, Bull, and the Oak tree. In relation to the other gods and goddesses Poseidon and Hades are known as his brothers and Hera is known as his sister and his wife. Cronus and Rhea were the parents of Zeus. His father wanted to swallow him like the rest of his older siblings because Cronus was afraid of his children gaining more power than him. Before Cronus had a chance to swallow Zeus, Rhea took him to Mount Crete. When Zeus got older he caused his father to throw up his brothers and sisters and together they destroyed Cronus.
Zeus was the supreme god and ruler of Olympus. He was known by many names: Lord of the Sky, the Rain-god, the Cloud-gatherer, and Zeus the Thunderer. Zeus was the sixth child born to Cronus and Rhea behind Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Dementer, and Hera. The high soaring eagle was sacred to him, and to the Romans he was known as Jupiter. Zeus was a strong, mighty, awesome, glorious, and wise god. Although, he was very foolish and naïve with hiding his love affairs from Hera.
Zeus is the Greek god of the sky and ruler of the Olympians. Zeus overthrew his father, Cronus, then drew lots with his brothers in order to decide who would succeed their father on the throne. Zeus was the winner of the draw and became the almighty ruler of the gods, as well became the lord of the sky and rain. Zeus was one who was easily angered which was not a good thing sometimes.. He also easily fell in love and had affairs with various women. Some of the abilities he possessed was the ability to throw lightning bolts. He had a winged horse called a Pegasus which carried his lightning bolts and he had trained an eagle to retrieve his lightning bolts.
Zeus was the Greek king of gods and was very important in Greek Mythology. His powers are to control the weather and thunder. His family consisted of Cronos, Rhea, and many brothers and sisters. In the Greek pantheon he was the top dog and everyone answered to him. He did many things that were not Christ like. He was not a real god. So that being said, Zeus could not have been king of gods because there is only one true God.
Zeus is one of the most well-known Greek gods because of his relations and powers .One reason he is famous is because he ruled over the other Greek gods. He was the father of some other Greek gods like Apollo, Perseus, Heracles, Hermes, Artemis, and Dionysus. As well as his relationships, Zeus was also well-known for his powers. He could throw lighting bolts which would shatter mountains. Zeus could also control the weather and cause huge storms. The last reason is Zeus assigned all the positions to the other Greek gods. He assigned Aphrodite
Zeus was known for a number of things, but his love affairs was one of the numerous things he was famous for. Zeus was the king of all the gods, he was known for the god of the skies, weather, fate and laws. Out of all of his lovers he had over the years, his first was known as Aphrodite. She was the goddess of beauty and was followed by Zeus when she first emerged from the great sea, but she managed to escape him. It did not take much time for Zeus’ wife Hera to realize that their marriage was falling into the deep end. Zeus had a deep lust which then made Hera’s jealousy fester. (Summary 1).
Zeus is the God of the sky and thunder. He plays important role in the Iliad as he is the God that many mortals pray to and rely on for help. Even other Gods look up to him and ask him for favors. In the Iliad Zeus along with other Gods are overlooking the Trojan war and using his God like powers to sway the results. Though others look up to him he feels an obligation to please others which causes him to influence the Trojan war on both sides. I chose this character because of how he appeases to mortals and Gods, though he makes promises to help the other side he stays loyal to the Trojans, and mortals and Gods pray to and look up to him.
