The Roles of Women in Ancient Greece and the Reasons for their Subordination Women in Greece were treated very differently from the men, they were thought of as less and weak men. The men controlled the lives of the women and made sure the women felt this way and knew their place. “Married women in Greece had three main jobs raise their children for the sake of Athens, show no weakness than was natural to their sex and avoid gossip.”(J. Coffin & R. Stacey 125).This was thought by all men in Greece but even more so in Athens. As time went on women became more inferior to men the problem did not get any better as Greece went into the dark ages. From birth the girls were given less opportunities then boys and this is where it all begins. Girls are not allowed to go to school they stay home with their mothers to be taught how to run a household. Women were not even to be seen outside the house if anything needed to be done like picking up supplies they would have to get there slaves to do it. How could girls consider themselves as smart as boys if they were not given the same opportunities? By the age of 14 girls are married of by their parents or as soon as they reach child bearing age. Boys attend school until they are 19 and then were sent off to war. Men overpowered women in many aspects women were not allowed to have jobs and had no way to receive money of their own. Men where more valued then women so they even received medical attention more often than women and because these women often had a higher mortality rate. When girls became age for child bearing they were married off by their fathers usually to men more than double their age. Younger men were supposed to dedicate their life to war. Often parents would marry off their children and they would give a dowry. Once women were married they were considered their husbands property. Soon as wives became married they would start having children and usually had a child every couple of years. (J.Coffin & R. Stacey).
