Rugby is a team sport played on a field. There are three main forms of rugby rugby league, rugby union and sevens. This paper will focus primarily on elements that they have in common. For the first two forms, there are thirteen players on the field for each team. A game is eighty minutes long and is divided into two halves of continuous action.

The objective of rugby is to carry an oblong ball down the field and across the opponent's goal line. This is the main scoring play, known as a try. A try is worth five points. In order to count for a try, the player must take the ball across the goal line and set it down on the ground. The point at which the ball is set down is used as the basis for the try at goal. This is a kicking play, and it follows a try. The team that scored the try attempts to kick the ball through the upright goal in the middle of the field. If successful, the try at goal is worth two points. The other way that rugby teams can earn points is through field goals. This is earned any time a player kicks the ball through the uprights of the opponent. This can happen from open play or on a penalty, and is worth one point.

Rugby is played on a large field and the players wear little equipment. There is no mandatory protective equipment, despite the high level of contact in the game. Some players do opt to wear head gear or mouthguards, and also shin guards to protect against cleats.
