In our society, when people see or hear the terms: gender assignment, gender identity, gender expression, or gender roles, they usually think of these as synonymous. In fact, that is quite the opposite. To understand these terms and how they connect to those in the world, we must first define the meanings. Before we define the terms, we must look at the difference between gender and sex. Sex refers to our biological selves whereas gender refers to anything that is beyond the biological spectrum. As mentioned in class, gender assignment is the biological sex assigned to you at birth. Gender identity refers to the how we ‘ascribe to ourselves’. This is not to be confused with gender expression, as most people do. Gender expression is how we express the identity. Think of it as masculine vs …show more content…

They are not race specific or “male/female” specific. Reading about these terms, the common factor that we see here is ‘gender’. In our society gender is very socially constructed. This means that we have been conditioned to think that certain behaviors, actions, toys, jobs and colors are for boys and different for girls. Take The Story Of X by Gould for example. In this piece, we see that X, an unidentified child is raised without social constructs. As we proceed through the story, we see that adults and some children who came across X instantly assumed that they are a boy or a girl from the attire they are wearing; becoming uncomfortable when they are told that X doesn’t identify as neither. This story describes our society down to the tee. We have been taught since the day we were born that we are supposed to conform to the rules and regulations forced upon us by those in our society and the generations before them. We are consumed by gender roles. We tell each other that, men are supposed to work dirty jobs; women are supposed work in the kitchen and more fragile occupations. Boys wear blue and girls pink. These are what we could call gender
