There are people that exceed the definition of a hero every day. For example, the three people that exceed the definition a hero are Martha Copeland, Carol Groen, and Walter Peyton. Two of these people are your average people that just love helping people in need and one is a well-known football player that got his own award for helping people. The first person that exceeded the definition was Martha Copeland. Martha exceeded this definition by uprooting her family to go to Indonesia to teach and build to help them learn and live safely. Martha did not do this because she wanted to be famous; she did this because she cares. She helped the people out of the kindness in her heart and she never bragged to anyone about what she has accomplished.

A hero is someone who is admired and valued for their courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities. A hero to one person may not be a hero to another. I strongly agree with this definition for a hero to a person is not always a hero to others. In saying this, my hero is Isabelle Bruce Reid because she was the first female to qualify in Australia as a veterinarian. To me, Isabelle Reid was a name in history who changed the world, is valued and is a great role model.

What is a hero? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word hero is defined as “a person admired for achievements and noble qualities”. People would typically think about the superheroes in fictional stories if they were to be asked the question, but what about the heroes in real life? Who has the “achievements and noble qualities” that would make them admirable? Perhaps one has those attainments: they would be bold, courageous, and would impact people’s lives; but yet, people would not admire them and call them a hero because everyone has their own perspective and ideas.

Gerard Way once said “All the best heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary”. There are many people in the modern society that others consider heroes, such as a soldier that is serving our country overseas or a fireman saving people from a burning building. Without question, there are many heroes in “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton, however two of the books heroes that have a great impact on the story are Dallas Winston and Johnny Cade. Without a doubt, heroes can be found everywhere doing amazing things. A true hero is someone who goes out of their way to help or save someone or something.

The definition of a hero is not a simple dictionary definition. Heroism is a complex idea, but many people in history have been regarded as heroes. While this change is what made them stand out, all you need to be is one who helps and trusts others even if you have to sacrifice something for them.

Heroes are defined differently depending on who you are asking. Heroes are based on backgrounds, families, perspectives, and so much more. Based on what I have witnessed and been through, I believe a hero is someone who positively makes a difference in the lives of others through their actions and experiences. Heroes are supposed to make us feel safer and are supposed to make us feel better about ourselves. A hero is supposed to overcome difficult situations and help everyone believe that anything is possible. Bo Meagher is my hero of Scott County. Bo is someone who has overcome obstacles and cancer, when he couldn’t do much about his condition.

Anyone who influences anyone else by saving or helping save his or her lives can be a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a nonviolent revolution to free his country. Even a parent can be a hero to his or her child by leading them in the right direction. All teachers are heroes when they make it their job to teach a child anything that will help them in life. You don’t have to go to great lengths by risking your life to make a difference in someone else’s life.

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Campbell 1). When we think of heroes most of us think of movie stars or professional athletes, but it’s not always about your popularity or talent it can also be about how you help society. What I think make a great hero is someone who is able to overcome his or her obstacles in life, is highly motivated, and has plenty of bravery.

Many people who do not consider themselves heroes, but others may think them much more than that. People who just smile and say hi and change a life forever. Hero are not born. They're made - sculpted by the choices they make and the people in their lives. A hero is not some abstract being, some superhuman, with inhuman power, or a perfectly selfless and good person.

When the word "hero" is spoken, everyone has different thoughts. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? To answer this question you must first ask yourself what a hero is; what comes to your mind when someone says the word. When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.

Today in the modern era, people think that others have to be famous or rich to be considered a hero, but this statement is false. Many people including myself, look up to others that are well known or have riches, when in reality the real heroes are the people that are non-famous and own less. To be a hero in the 20th century, people need to be confident in their decisions, and a good role model to kids around the world. America needs to open their eyes and see that real heroes are all around, but to find them, others need to look in the right places.
