Common Core Initiatives
History
The Tenth Amendment of the United States Constitution declares that the states have the authority in handling educational standards (Boslaugh, 2015). Each state can come up with their own requirements and rules for their educational systems. For many years, this system seemed to work and showed good results. “The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is a voluntary set of standards for English and mathematics for kindergarten through grade 12” (Boslaugh, 2015, para 1). It is meant to reduce educational inequality and create the same requirements for public schools in the US. CCSSI is all the content and material that students are expected to learn and know in every grade. Common Core also requires testing for each grade to show if the students know what they have learned. Teachers are still able to create their own syllabuses and lesson plans with Common Core so they still have the freedom to choose how they want to teach the material to the students.
The Disadvantages
One drawback with the Common Core system, is that it doesn’t meet the needs of minority students. Minority students feel that their learning styles are not integrated in the classroom in relevance to their cultures. Minority students sometimes feel that they cannot connect certain concepts to their knowledge. CCSSI takes away the culture of minority students and replaces it with a standardized culture that appears to be the same for everyone. (Brown, 2016). Another issue deals with gaps between rich students and poor students and with black or white students (Ravitch, 2016). “The failure rates on the Common Core tests are staggeringly high for black and Hispanic children, students with disabilities and English-language learners.”
