MK Ultra was a project formed by the CIA as a mind control program (“Project MKULTRA,” 2016). This program implemented a new way to interrogate by using torture and drugs such as marijuana and LSD (“Project MKULTRA,” 2016). The reason for these tactics were to weaken the individual so the agency could get a confession through mind control (“Id,”2016). Headed by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, MK Ultra was started officially on the order of CIA director Allen Welsh Dulles on April 13, 1953 (“Id,”2016). The goal was to develop mind-controlling drugs for use against the Soviet bloc in response to the allegations that North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union were already using techniques of mind control and torture on prisoners of war (“Id,”2016). …show more content…
Although sometimes top officials at these institutions were aware of the CIA 's involvement, most often the CIA operated through these institutions using front organizations (“Id,”2016). They also conducted business through other organizations by having subprojects (“Id,”2016). These projects were the research that most did not know MK Ultra was driving (“Id,”2016). Some of these subcontracts were also through colleges (“Id,”2016). Project MK Ultra was first brought to public attention by anonymous tips (“Id,”2016). Because of those tips, in 1975 the Church Committee of the U.S. Congress and Gerald Ford began to investigate CIA activities within the United States (“Id,”2016). Investigative efforts were initially hampered by the fact that CIA Director Richard Helms ordered all MK Ultra files destroyed in 1973; however, the Church Committee and Rockefeller Commission investigations relied on both the sworn testimony of direct participants and on the relatively small number of documents that survived Helms ' destruction order (“Id,”2016). “One 1955 MK Ultra document gives an indication of the size and range of the effort; this document refers to the study of an assortment of mind-altering substances” (“Id,”2016). Obviously enough information survived or else we still wouldn’t know about these experiments today. Once Project MK Ultra officially got underway in April 1953, experiments
In a letter written by Admiral Stansfield Turner, Director of Central Intelligence Agency dated July 15, 1977, he disclosed a recent discovery of seven boxes of documents related to Project MKULTRA. The CIA tried to cover up the evidence that MKULTRA ever existed they sent Seven boxes to retired records in Washington
The day November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, would soon become known as a tragic day in US history. John F Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, had been drumming up support for the upcoming election. Tragically, he was brutally gunned down by Lee Harvey Oswald. At first glance, this assassination seems like a simple murder. A communist defector simply was angry with JFK and decided to kill him. Many people have failed to notice, however, that the CIA not only had motive to kill JFK, but they also attempted to cover up many details about Lee Harvey Oswald, and JFK in general. If the general populus continues to believe what the CIA wants them to, we will never understand who
Through psychological warfare the involvement in our every day lives without our knowing or intention of benefiting its civilians is established. MKUltra was a CIA mind control program that began in the early 1950s that made illegal experimentation on unsuspecting people to further the research on mind control. This shocking illegal program crafted by the government brings to question what other things are being kept hidden. The evidence at hand of the existence of projects similar to MKUltra exhibits a disturbing, intrusive, abusive power. Although the government is the brain of the nation, this does not justify the illegal partaking interest in attempting to control its people through mind control. Since it will lead to corruption that will ultimately harm the Nation through self-benefiting selfish actions. Digging deeper in this iniquitous program, MKUltra can be
The CIA, otherwise known as the Central Intelligence Agency, is a federal agency that is independent and has the responsibilities of providing the country of the United States with national security intelligence. The CIA is in charge of gathering information that is going on from other countries in order to help our own national security to become stronger, and to be able to protect the citizens of the United States better. However, what happens when the CIA tries to protect it’s citizens by screwing over other countries? What happens when the CIA is responsible for destroying other countries’ governments or placing leaders where we do not belong as a country to try and control politics that we should not even be involving ourselves in. While the CIA is meant to have good intentions for providing our country with national security, a lot of times the United States is responsible for meddling in affairs we never belonged in which cause harm, devastation, or death to the countries we force ourselves upon.
In the novel 1984 George Orwell demonstrates how the government maintains power through mind control and manipulation of the masses. Orwell hints that when the government (Big Brother), holds too much power they become crooked and devious towards the rest of the population. In a nutshell Orwell is conveying that a corrupt government destroys all chances for an ideal society. Collectively, George Orwell made a prediction of what was going to happen, and it has become a reality to some extent. Overall this is a great book for the current political state.
The CIA’s involvement in the killing of JFK is one of the popular theories put forward by conspiracy theorists. President Kennedy was said to have told an official in his administration, “I want to splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it to the winds” (McGovern, 2013, para. 3). Many of the individuals who disliked Kennedy believed he was the reason for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. They also believed that he would reduce the size of the military industrial complex and that he was not going after communism hard enough. The CIA was involved

Project MKUltra, sometimes referred to as Project Monarch, is a program of many different experiments tested on American Citizens by the CIA. Experiments on humans were intended to identify and develop drugs and procedures to be used in interrogations and torture, in order to weaken the individual to force confessions through mind control. Project MKUltra started in the 1950’s and lasted around 20 years. The CIA experimented on countless unsuspecting American Citizens that were exposed to drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, abuse and torture. Subjects that were least likely to put up a fight were picked for the operation. Popular places and subjects were nursing homes, prisons, mental hospitals, homeless people, and drug addicts. Over 44 different universities were involved in the operation. Doctor Sidney Gottlieb was chosen to lead the program when it officially began in 1953. The US started mind control experiments, torture, and brainwashing programs after reports that the Chinese and North Koreans were testing techniques on prisoners of war in WWII. The CIA was authorized to commit 6% of of their entire operating budget on MKUltra with no guidelines or oversight on how it was spent. Operations for MKUltra were so secretive that even the agents running the the CIA front companies were alleged to have not known anything beyond their own

The US after the war becoming aware of these so called “mind control” techniques came to the conclusion that this method was to time intensive, so with the help of modern day sedatives, alcohol and drugs the US eventually completed their research, but the price was US lives with some even committing suicide. Therefore America 's conduct of espionage during the Cold war similar to that of Russian espionage, when trying
Throughout the JFK assassination the CIA comes up a lot. Many people believe that the CIA did in fact have something to do with JFK’s murder, and
Recently during our class period, I did a group project with several classmates on a topic that is rather unheard of. The topic we discussed during our class period was called Project MKUltra. Project MKUltra was a project created by the CIA. The CIA did illegal experiments on numerous human subjects from the United States and Canada in order to develop drugs, such as LSD, in order “to be used in interrogations and torture, in order to weaken the individual to for confessions through mind control” (“CIA MKUltra Collection”). The project began in the early 1950s and did not come to an end until 1973 and involved several organizations.
The term “Covert Action” brings with it a connotation of shadowy figures wrapped in secrecy and intrigue. It also brings with it a substantial amount of moral questions as to “what is right.” The use of covert action has been widely publicized since the early seventies, but trying to find out the truth to these events has been difficult to say the least. What is even more difficult, is historically recording these events into categories of successes or failures. These operations are difficult to dissect because of their secrecy and although events have been recorded, some facts simply aren’t apparent. This paper will seek to identify the complex issues associated with covert operations.
Allen Dulles, Director of the CIA, was intrigued by Chinese use of brainwashing used on the prisoners of war. He wanted to scientifically learn more about the techniques they could use in the future, he later consulted with Dr. Harold Wolff. The Doctor was enthusiastic about starting a study that would lead to much of the CIA’s knowledge about communist Brainwashing.
